Mad Max is not post-apocalyptic, just dystopian near-future. The Road Warrior is the first one set after the nuclear apocalypse. And this was decades before pre-sold, trillion dollar franchises were commonplace. Back then, low-budget independent films like this one filled out the grindhouse theaters and occasionally were good or entertaining enough to become surprise hits. That's what happened with Mad Max. Same goes for the original Terminator: not a studio film but a scrappy little independent that broke through.

You are half right. Mad Max is just dystopian near-futur. The Road Warrior is, in case of Australia, post-apocalyptic. Beyond Thunderdome is nuclear apocalypse. The first three movies show a descending world at its different stages.

Finally someone reacting to the Original. Hope Road Warrior is next followed by Thunderdome. This was In Australia with Australian cop car colors mad max's car was an Australian Ford Falcon Pursuit Intercepter built for the wide open straight roads across Australia.

Theres a movie called A Boy And His Dog (1975)... big influence on Mad Max and Fallout.. Don Johnson's (Miami vice) 1st movie. Sort of created the Mad Max aesthetic (minus the carss). Based on a short story by Harlan Ellison, who's work also influenced the post apocalyptic Terminaror series. Also it's on KZfaq in its entirety for free.

"I'm scared, Fif. You know why? It's that rat circus out there. I'm beginning to enjoy it." "What is this, funny week?" "Look. Any longer out on that road and I'm one of them, you know? A terminal crazy... only I got a bronze badge to say I'm one of the good guys." Fun Fact: Hugh Keays-Byrne, Tim Burns, and Reg Evans (Toecutter, Johnny the Boy, and the stationmaster) were all classically-trained Shakespearean stage actors. Hugh Keays-Byrne modeled his performance of Toecutter after historical records written about Mongolian warlord Temujin, also known as Genghis Khan. Tim Burns (Johnny the Boy) was so into character that he annoyed everyone on-set, and was abandoned one day during lunch while handcuffed to the wreck. Bonus Fact: The "get-out-of-jail-free card" that Goose gives the triker was an on-set joke. Because of the limited budget, the biker gang was an actual biker gang (the Vigilantes), and they had to ride to the set each day in-costume; often with their prop weapons displayed. Since the production company expected them to be pulled over by the local police, each was given a letter explaining the film's peculiar requirements, and asking for law-enforcement's understanding and cooperation.

My favorite cars from this show are the yellow interceptors. They are wicked cool looking. In real life they were beat up former taxis.

18:34 this one scene inspired the entire Saw franchise. This one scene is what gave the director the idea for the movies.

The first one is set in the midst of the world unraveling. There's still some semblance of society hanging on by a thread. The next film is post apocalypse and more in line with your expectations.

That was the same actor playing both the Toecutter here and Immortan Joe in Fury Road. But the characters are not the same. The black supercharged Pursuit Special is built on a 1973 Ford Falcon XBGT. A very iconic Australian muscle car. It's now in a car museum in Orlando, Florida.

Now you have to see THE ROAD WARRIOR. Not only the best film of the MAD MAX franchise but one of the best action films of the 1980s (and that's saying something).

6:55 You're not wrong about that. According to the Mad Max Fandom wiki, there was a deleted scene where Toecutter and his gang attacked The Halls of Justice and killed most of the MFP Officers.

The first one was good but it kind of aged pretty badly. But it's all about the Road Warrior. Even the remake hardly referenced the first or third movie in the trilogy. Anyway Empire Strikes Back, Temple of Doom, The Godfather, Terminator, Aliens, The Road Warrior, it's always number 2!

As you can tell it was a low budget movie. George Miller sometimes couldn't pay the cast and crew at times with money so he'd offer them hot dogs and beer as payment which nobody turned down luckily for him because everybody was having so much fun.

Just watched Mad Max for the first time myself. Makes Mel Gibson's career trajectory that much more predictable in retrospect. 😆 Mad Max was good (and you definitely see how it influenced so much of pop culture), but yeah, it was pretty crude production-wise.
