the thing with the Mad Max movies, per word of George Miller i think, is that they play out more like mythology than a strict canon or timeline, and so each movie can be enjoyed separately they're like a story told over and over and changing in big and small ways on the re-telling, incorporating elements from other stories and legends - it can be read like this is a telling of Furiosa's story that incorporates Mad Max (like how Maid Marian originated separately but was later incorporated into the Robin Hood mythos) but the 'true' story in the history of the Wasteland is only similar in broad strokes
@theirishviking9278
@theirishviking9278 2 ай бұрын
i think the only exception to this is the first two which are pretty much a direct continuation separated by a few years in verse after that yeah its very much more a mythos thing
@floydster23
@floydster23 2 ай бұрын
@@theirishviking9278 Only the first one. It's considered canon.....Max was a cop & loses the family. All the others are told as stories long after the events. 2nd one by an old man remembering things as a kid, 3rd one by Savannah many years later. Even though Fury Road doesn't explicitly state this in the movie, Miller has been clear it's an account of the road war as told by the "word burghers" (historians basically)

It's also classic white-hat-black-hat Western where the hero is neither a white hat, nor a black hat, but exists in the liminal space between. As in _Shane_ Shane was a reluctant hero that saves a town (and a boy), but walks away once the town is saved. I think that applies a bit more to RWII, but still here.
@foxsotired3038
@foxsotired3038 Ай бұрын
And to expand on that. The quote from the end of the movie is attributed to 'The first history man'. The history men are the first historians after the collapse of humanity. They are the people who create the new mythology and Max is immortalized in that history. 'When the world fell they burned the books, leaving nothing but a random collection of Wordburgers. We History Men and Women preserve these stories'.

This movie had so many practical effects. All the cars and explosions are real, though the explosions were touched up a bit.

Yeah from what I remember, it was like 80% practical and the last 20% was CGI used to add a pop of color and flair, like accents and such.

Surprisingly, the biggest CGI effects were all to created the surrounding landscapes and environments - like the brown rocky canyon they drive through (most of it doesn't actually exist!).

Some cool facts: - George Miller essentially roughed out a graphic novel of the movie so all the shot compositions were fairly pinned down ahead of filming. - The night scenes are "day for night" and color graded afterward - Almost all of the explosions and crash rigs are practical effects and just comped together for moments with humans in frame (some CGI explosions are also comped together, but a vast majority of the explosions are real)

36:47 - They're spitting it into the intake, because they're manually performing the role of aerosolizing the liquid propellant into a mist, because it won't combust effectively otherwise. This works in essentially the exact same way that firespitting performers do in order to allow the propellant to instantly catch fire all at once by maximizing the available surface area of the liquid to be in contact with the oxygen in the air. This way, rather than just a small amount of propellant burning, all of the exposed tiny droplets of propellant catch fire almost instantaneously as a conflagration detonation. The reason they're doing it, is that they're using that propellant as a way to forcibly amplify the strength of the combustion within the engine to boost their speed.

Man, as someone with combat related PTSD, that framerate shift in the early sequence when Max is trying to escape after he's been captured is EXCELLENT. I've never really seen a portrayal in movies that adequately captures the sensation of your brain being in full fight AND flight mode, where everything seems both slow and fast at the same time, but Miller fucking NAILED it.

One of the through-lines of the story is Max becoming human once again. In the beginning he's no more than 'an instinct' to survive. He becomes a blood bag, but he has no voice. Then he regains his voice, but has no name. It's not until the end that he regains his name. He's human once more, but his redemption isn't over. He's well on his way, though.

So the role of the Doof Warrior( guitar guy) is to stand upon his Doof Wagon , and using Musical code he relays instructions to the rest of the war party. Like the old Flag signals in the navy. In this time period there's no working radios, and it would be hard to hear words over all those loud war rigs anyway, But its possible to hear the Rhythm of the Doof warrior!!

The way it builds its world is one of the MANY reasons it is so great. In a modern film, when a couple goes to a restaurant to eat they just do it. They don't explain how they wait for a seat, look at the menu, eat, pay, tip and leave. We understand all that so it is never explained. So many sci-fi/fantasy films feel the need to explain how their world works... often to people who should already know how the world works because they live in it. But not here. George Miller is confident that just showing them living their lives is enough context for the audience. It's the ultimate trust fall. You see a dying War Boy paint his face, Yell "Witness Me" and jump to his death and everyone cheers. And you get it. They don't have to explain it. And with that piece of information you can apply to other aspects of their daily life. They need blood. They worship cars. They have half-lives. It's such great film making.

Some of the terminology is Mad Max specific but I think some is just Australian slang, or in other words also incomprehensible to sane people :) The old woman who said everyone had their fill "back then" was indeed talking about our times- it makes sense that the people in the post-apocalypse romanticize our time as a sort of Golden Age of plenty, even if it's not correct. One cool thing about Max helping the stabbed Furiosa is that part of his backstory used to be that he was a first responder (although I don't think that's still canon as the timeline of the apocalypse seems to have changed from being a recent thing in the earlier movies to being significantly in the past in this one but I'm not 100% on that)
@theirishviking9278

some of it is aussie slang but most of it is very much just mad max slang that is defiantly inspired by aussie slang the timeline has also been stated to be more a mythology that a hard and set timeline (i believe the game made around the same time as this movie is meant to also be "canon" to max story) these are characters who are more archetypes than they are people
@SpiralSine6

Mild spoilers for Furiosa: Imperator Jack talks about how his parents were also first responders, trying to help people while the world was falling apart. So while this movie is farther along in the loose Mad Max timeline, it isn’t impossible for the previous movies to have happened as seen.

The world building in this movie is phenomenal; especially the different cultures we see. They feel fleshed out just from the vocabulary we hear them use. I mean, they call water "Aqua Cola", which is such a batshit thing to write into a serious story, but in the context of the movie stuff like that works perfectly.

The best one, by far, is something I didn't catch until I watched with the subtitles on. Nux tells Capable that when he goes to Valhalla, he thinks he'll be "McFeasting". Absolutely insane, and it's a complete throwaway line.

The original trilogy goes chronologically following Max starting with Mad Max (1979), The Road Warrior (1981) sometimes call mad max 2 The Road Warrior, and then Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). To answer the question "How much is practical?" All of it. Goerge Miller is kind of the reason there are so many safety precautions in Hollywood today.

My favorite story about the making of this movie is the making of the Doof Wagon with the huge drums, amps, and flamethrower guitar setup... the crew put it all together to what they felt was George Miller's specs and they presented it to him and he asked to hear the amps cranked up. They explained that the amps were just props and they could always just add in the music in post-production. Nope, that wouldn't do for George... it had to all actually work! So yeah... they had to go back and get that thing loaded with loud-ass amps and Doof Warrior's guitar really worked... and really shot fire. Completely batshit and I love it! :-D George is a madman!

While not 100% required there are quite a few things in this movie that reference the Mad Max game. Nothing overly important just a whole bunch of stuff that would ordinarily be written off as 'well, that was weird' are actually really meaningful when you know what they're referencing. For example there's a whole story behind the little girl who gets run over (Glory the Child) and her mother Hope. You really should watch the original films. They're classics for a reason.

George Miller is a great film maker in general. The fact that he's basically the father of machine-cult post-apocalypse genre after making Mad Max in '79 but then pull off movies like Babe and Happy Feet is insane. He is a once in a generation film maker and we're lucky he still ha stories to tell. Like Blade Runner, Mad Max created an enduring aesthetic that is basically a part of film-making vocabulary at this point. Anything that came after always feels like it is just vibing on what he did. The original Fallout game is full of references, like teh leather armor you wear just looks like Max. Highly recommend the Mad Max game that came out in like 2015, it wasn't deep but it had teh vibes of this movie and is a lot of fun.

Interplay was originally working on Mad Max game but EA gave Miller a financially better offer (the EA Mad Max game eventually didn't happen anyway), so Interplay, after losing rights, still wanted to make a post-apo game, and to make things different (especially when they also made Wasteland, a traditional post-apo they also lost rights for) they came up with all that retro-futuristic concept.

Fury Road is the best entry of this franchise. Allmof the movies are very different with the first one being a very low-budget guerilla style independent movie that doesn't really adequately reflect the post-apocalyptic world that the series would become. But dont let it turn you off, because , the second film, The Road Warrior, was incredible for its time. That's where a lot of people jumped on board the series. Also Furiosa is amazing.

Agree on the thing you said at the end. These days everything is about bringing back the old characters or spin-off about their backstory etc but I don’t really buy it. Lack of knowledge we have on a character makes the mysterious character more charming

Hey, loved your enthusiastic reaction to this one.😊 I have seen all 4 of the MAD MAX movies. In the 1st 3 movies Mel Gibson is Mad Max. The movies follow Max @ different times of his life as he makes his way thru the desolate wasteland of his world. The 1st movie shows u how the world seemed to be going to Hell in a Handbasket. This newer version captures the deadly car races thru the desert, that Max is fierce & deep down he has a good heart despite everything he's been thru. I watched the 3rd movie MAD MAX: BEYOND THUNDERDOME in the theater w/my parents. They wanted to see it because Tina Turner was in it.😄 Anyway, I really enjoyed this reaction, & would be up for u watching the previous 3 movies.😊👍

@Omn1media do yourself a favor and the channel too seek out all of George Miller's films he has directed (yes far more then the mad max franchise), as well as the early films some truly great stories. This was a treat

36:50 by guess is that by spitting it your making it more of a mist than a liquid ... which might do something i don't know how those engines work well enough to comment on it further

I love Mad Max (technically the second film), but this movie is my favorite. Budget, sure with modern cinematography, effects, etc. but I really enjoy the worldbuilding in the film. I think Tom Hardy did a great job as a further traumatized Max (from his past we see in the earlier movies). Enjoyed the reaction my man!
