Santana is the master of tone and phrasing. His guitar sounds are soooo smooth, and he's keeping up with an absolutely astonishing rhythm section and adding to that vibe with the notes being placed at exactly the right time.

This is from their legendary 1970 Tanglewood concert, and is actually a medley of Peter Green's "Black Magic Woman" and Gabor Szabo's "Gypsy Queen". The vocals are by keyboardist Gregg Rolie, who later was a founding member of Journey. You should give a listen to "Soul Sacrifice" from the same concert. By the way, Kanami from Band-Maid has always said that Santana is her favorite guitarist.

I assume the Santana track you're referencing at the beginning of the video is "Smooth" but it's hard to even be sure because his "Supernatural" album is undeniably one of the most iconic albums of all time with several tracks that still see consistent play. Personally I think "Maria Maria" from the same album probably goes down as his most iconic song and with good reason, it's a community uniting Latin/R&B fusion song that really hasn't been successfully replicated.

I heard Carlos Santana and his band do this live on my college campus one night in 1968. It hadn’t hit the radio stations yet. I was blown away! It was unique at the time. Santana is still is huge and still based in San Francisco area of California. Do you have any background in music than listening to it?

This song is legendary. First time I heard it was 2001. It was mesmerizing. At first I thought it was an instrumental because of its extensive introduction. But honestly, the instrumentation is awesome enough to have carried the whole song if there were no lyrics. THEN he finally sings, and you're completely hooked. A wonderful song from beginning to end. ^_^

Santana is the lead guitarist here, *sometimes* he lsings but I don't think I've ever heard him as a lead singer. If you want to hear a really powerful guitar performance from him, listen to "Europa (Earth's Cry Heavens Smile)"

You can't go wrong with Santana! I have another random recommendation. ...But One Ghost by City of Sound. Some of their fans describe their music as "Hopeful Emo" which made me think of you! Have a great day!
