I have a friend who was assigned the task of translating Madame Bovary into English and The Scarlett Letter into French as part of a final exam at the university. He had 3 weeks to complete it ~ he would spend hours each day locked in his room ~ the rest of us were busy translating our college years into regrets and missed opportunities 🤔😄

This book was always in restricted section in school library. My first experience from the great French literature was “ The Count of Monte Cristo” that too translated to English and the seaport city Marseille was popular among school children in those days. Edmond Dantes, Mercedes and Abbe Faria.

The book was considered shocking and an affront to public morale at the time it was published.

You can also watch the film released in 1991 by Claude Chabrol, an excellent French film director who respected the novel and the atmosphere as well as the costumes of the XIXth century, it will transport you back to Flaubert's era. Isabelle Huppert who plays the role of Emma Bovary is astounding..

This book is very vell known and popular in Russia by the way. Read it in my 20s. By all means worth reading.

In france we read dostoievski, tolstoi, gogol, pouchkine, boulgakov, tourgueniev, tchekhov, leskov, lermontov, nabokov, pasternak... The most famous in french is obviously dostoievski. I start read vassili grossman

@@rybfrjbryxvuy9580 O my god so nice to hear that you in France 🇫🇷 like and read our literature. In Russia among French writers the most popular of course is Alexandre Dumas. In then USSR I read "Les Trois Mousquetaires" for the first time at 11. Also we know and ❤ Balzac, Émile Zola, Prosper Mérimée, Maurice Druon. Everybody from 7 till 100 knows Georges Simenon and his Сommissaire Jules Maigret.

@@rybfrjbryxvuy9580 There's rather popular line in Russia, which is impossible to translate unfortunately. But if you may in Russian it sounds like this: ""Коль в Пушкине ни Бэ ни Мэ, не сваливай вину на Мериме" :)

I think French is a great choice given the amount countries that speak it in different continents and given that English has French as the largest amount of vocabulary origin.

French were good mannered people, my Patron once said that even the Royal Family of UK considered, speaking French among themselves or in a community elevate the status and integrity of them and would become felt proud. ( Do not know whether it is a fact ).

Hello Jade. With this kind of book you can learn vocabulary and grammar, but how do you learn and practice spoken french ?

My main goal with learning French is to read novels in French, therefore this kind of practice is most useful for me. That being said, you can’t say much in conversation if you lack vocabulary/words. Very soon I have a video coming on how I practice spoken French.
