Madame Web is seen in offhand stories, comics, and video games. Her origin is never fully explored, because its supposed to be mysterious. Her powers are completely OP. To write a 'hero's journey' would be near impossible with her character.

Idk if you know this or not but her origin is explored. She is (was Cassandra Webb is dead the new Madame Web is Julia Carpenter) psychic mutant who was blind from birth due to her strong clairvoyant and transient abilities. In fact they are so powerful that her body is connected to a life support machine made by her husband which is her infamous seat she sits on since she is also paralyzed. She isn't exactly Spider-Verse character and is more like the Beyonders or like the watchers except having more active roles in stories, Although it is true she has a deep connection to the Web of Life and Destiny. For context, Sony had a hard time with Amazing Spider Man 2. It made money but was heading in a downward trajectory. They cancelled the Amazing Spider Man 3 movie because of the second movie. Because of this, they made a deal with Disney, Marvel to loan Spiderman in a number of MCU movies and for MCU characters to have guest appearances in a number of Spiderman movies. We know the details of the contract due to Sony making a comedy about North Korea that pissed off NK. They hacked into Sony's database and released all the details of many contracts they have, one of witch was the Spiderman contract. The contract was very strict on Sony, and it makes sense as Sony was the desperate party wanting to reimage Spiderman and ride the coattails of the MCU at its hight. The contract had in it that all characters from the Spiderman franchise must be unique in that they will only be in the MCU shared movies cross franchise. Some of the reason was Marvel studios didn't want people to be confused with what movies were official MCU movies. So this ment Tom Holland Spiderman could not be in any movie that wasn't sanctioned by Marvel studios. Also Marvel had a clause that forbid Sony from having a different Spiderman in Sony movies to once again avoid audience confusion. That is why the Venom movies don't have Spiderman in them, even though he is central to the story. Sony thought they had a work around with the contract by having Spiderman movies that don't have the MCU characters in them. It was a gutsy move I think is proving to be a massive failure and mistake. You can't get away with trying to pull the wool over the audience's eyes for long. Eventually people will clue in that what Sony is doing is not in anyway tied to the Tom Holland movies.

@@markiangooley I would rather an actor have to be good at what they do than just be attractive. If they are both then more power to them, but I think it would be better for a movie's quality if they had good actors and actresses, not just attractive ones. I would settle for likeable actors, which when it comes to Dakota Johnson, I think sometimes she is, but I haven't seen many of her movies so I'm collecting from a very small sample size and I don't have any perception of her as a person although I don't feel any dislike towards her, although I don't get the sense that she has much charisma. Again, I wouldn't know in all fairness. What I'm getting at is that some actors even if they aren't the best often get by on certain types of roles or on their own charisma or just likeability overall outside of their acting (Keanu Reeves is an example of this as he isn't the best or worst actor out there, but he is really good in stoic roles and is a super nice and charismatic guy as a person) but I never really thought of Dakota Johnson as a great actress or someone who stands out that much personality-wise outside of her movies other than being attractive, so there isn't much that really draws me to go see her movies. I'm not trying to hate on her, I'm just saying that attractiveness shouldn't be all we expect from an actor or actress in order to go see their films. Also to be fair, a single performer no matter how capable isn't typically enough to carry a movie. It's a collaborative effort and although I haven't seen this movie, I think it's pretty obvious that the blame shouldn't be put squarely on any one actor's shoulders, including Johnson's. If anything, this movie seems to fail predominantly in the writing and directing, with the acting being a problem, but not the main one, and more so across the board, not just with its leading actor. As for Dakota's other work, I don't think of her as a good actor to my taste, but there have been much worse ones. I still would rather see a movie with good acting as opposed to pretty faces.

Madame Web is more than your average Marvel hero; she doesn't engage in physical battles but uses her clairvoyance and precognition to foresee the future and connect all spider-themed characters through the mystical Web of Life and Destiny. Essentially, she's the Marvel Universe's linchpin, akin to an internet router, critical yet complex to reset. Turning her into a frontline hero misses the mark. Madame Web excels as the omniscient guide, similar to a modern oracle using a crystal ball instead of social media. Her true strength lies in her deep knowledge and the ability to see the bigger picture, making her an unparalleled strategist within the spider-verse, akin to a more mystical version of DC's Oracle. Her depiction should reflect her unique role as the guiding seer, emphasizing her strategic importance rather than fitting her into a conventional heroic role.

This movie would have been better if it was written like the Flash movie, Groundhog day or Edge of Tomorrow (including a montage of several timeline of failures before she gets the hang of whats actually going on) (ofc ending with a return to the first shot of the movie and her knowing exactly how to solve it now). Probably also using a whole roster of villains at once (so people can fail against one and have Madam Web send someoe else with a skillset that counters that specific villain).

Soyny would probably legitimately be competing with nintendo switch in the handheld market right now if they weren't so stupid.

Basically, the original Madam Webb was an old woman, voiced by Stan Lee's wife, on the old Spiderman cartoon. She served as the Dungeon Master of the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoons for most of it, giving cryptic advice and warnings. At the end she ends up to have been working with the Beyonder, a godlike interdimensional being, to test many alternate Spidermen, and make a group of them (that they decided would be led by the main cartoon one) to help fight a Peter that went crazy and was possessed by Carnage's symbionte, and that was threatening to destroy the multiverse itself. On the last episode she took him to meet Stan Lee and then to find Mary Jane, who had disappeared inside a portal for... a while. And that was the end of the show. I don't know much about her in the comics, but she came from the cartoon. And was also just as old and cryptic there.

I heard that the actors had been told that this was an "MCU" movie, and even on set, were led to believe that they were basically working for the MCU. That would explain why some of these actors are in the movie, and why they're now pissed and trashing the movie (in addition to the movie just being bad). I think Sony was forced to put the movie out in time in order to keep the copyright going, and that was the most important goal for them - just get it out in time. Everything else (whether it was any good, whether it made money) was secondary. Except now that it's such a huge flop, that may have spelled disaster for this part of the "universe" as a whole. Sony still owns Spider-Man (and all of the characters related to him), I believe, but for right now, they're allowing Marvel to use Spider-Man in movies (and Sony gets paid like 50% of the gross). While Marvel is using Spider-Man, I don't think Sony can use him the same way, so they can only beat around the bush and make references to him. But I think as far as the Spider-Man characters are concerned, Sony has full ownership, technically. Marvel has just gotten temporary permission to use Spider-Man himself - though Marvel owned Spider-Man back in the day, and there's a possibility that they could sue to get back the rights now that all these Sony movies are flopping. If it's true that the actors were lied to, Marvel can sue and say that Sony is misrepresenting their movies and trying to muddy the waters between Sony/Marvel, and therefore Sony shouldn't have the rights anymore.

In the comics, Madame Web was a psychic who could see the "Web of Time" under the concept that there is no singular future that's guaranteed to happen, only possibilities that intertwine with the present like a spiderweb. However, her mind is so powerful her body is weak to the point where she cannot survive without a life support system, that which looks like a throne with a giant web behind it. In one comic, the Rhino is sent to kidnap her and she nearly dies since he removes her from her life support. Blind to the present right in front of her and unable to move on her own, she primarily acted as an advisor to Spiderman. That being said, she was not particularly connected to him through origin or powers.

From the moment this was announced, I knew it was gonna be bad. Not from it being a Sony Spiderman-adjacent film, but rather how the Hell do you make a movie based off of Madame Web? Literally, what she does is guide and assist Spider-Man in certain cases and plays against the Beyonder in what's basically a game of Risk with superheroes and supervillains. She's a paralyzed and blind mutant that can see the future and possesses Telepathy that uses it to help uphold the fabric of reality and solve crime with Peter Parker. She's not really a direct-line crime fighter or fighter in general since she's old and crippled. Sure she can still fight with her telepathy and precognition, but a direct fight with anyone is not in her favor. And especially worse when Ezekiel, another mentor and ally of Spider-Man, is the Tarantula. Like, the backstory is sorta similar, except that he's actually evil and not a jackass that does good stuff, but what was stopping them from using Morlun? The change sounds so stupid and pointless that it feels like they put effort into being lazy.

Back then she was just a cryptic grandma who summoned Peter to her private pocket dimension before sending him on plot centric missions to other dimensions that would result in Peter meeting alternate versions of himself or Spiderman. Whenever Granny Webb showed up you knew the story was revving up to get complicated. Beyond that she had no other relevance to the Marvel Universe that I’m aware of. Her overall purpose seems to be as a supervisor for the spiderverse I think. Other than her affinity for Tarot that’s about all I know about her. She never struck me as a heroic character so much as a supporting character for Spider Man.

"madam web" sounds 100% exactly like what a 5 year old would come up with when they wanted to make their own spider man like character but couldnt think of a name so they just swapped words out for words with basically the same meaning i know what im talking about because i used to do that a lot when i was 5 only when i was 5 i was already more intelligent than stan lee ever was in his entire life

They basically stole the origin of The Phantom... Not even the old serial, no, the Billy Zane version.
