Mark Knopfler's finger picking is second to none. And his story telling is just soooo good 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 The Sultans Of Swing was a jaz band that he stumbled upon in a bar on a wet London day. They were very mediocre 😂😂😂 Thus the song was born 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Mark Knopfler was , and still is , one of the world's GREAT guitarists and Dire Straits one of the 20th Century's GREAT bands . Maddy, Mark Knopfler is one of the all-time greatest guitar players. I have been playing guitar for almost 50 years, and I can tell you that Mark is a grandmaster of the guitar. He plays without a pick, and has such a clean, pure, and soulful sound. Very impressive. I agree with you that John Illsley on bass, and Terry Williams on Drums really add a lot to the underlying driving groove of the song. Really enjoyed your reaction. You have a new sub.

Great live performance! Dire Straits are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Brothers In Arms", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "So Far Away" etc. They don't have a bad song.

I have listened to this song, many times. A few comments. First, Mark's style of playing the guitar, with just his fingers instead of using a pick, makes the lead guitar sound more subdued. He is a fantastic guitar player and has some great licks, but other instruments have to step up and carry the song. The drums and bass do exactly that. Not enough is said about the keyboards. I believe there are actually two keyboard players in this performance. The organ at the end is just the icing on the cake. Overall, you will never see a better live band performance than this. just fantastic. The perfect balance between talent and showmanship.

Not heard that story before @mikefetterman6782! I did hear that Eric Clapton turned up every night for Dire Straits' 14 night residency at a venue, I'm assuming Wembley Arena during the Brothers in Arms tour, just to marvel at Mark's ability to play all the songs virtually note-for-note the same every single time rather than always improvising different solos. Of course the two went on to perform together a lot over the next few years, with Mark joining Eric for his 25th anniversary tour and Eric standing in for Jack Sonni (who sadly died very recently) when Dire Straits headlined the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium in '88 because Jack's wife had just given birth to twins. Eric joined Dire Straits again at Knebworth '90 and he and Mark played together on Money for Nothing and the slow version of Layla at the Music for Montserrat concert at the Royal Albert Hall in '98. What a phenomenal performances every one of those was!

Coffee shops in Japan always had a theme to distinguish them from all the other shops ( no Starbucks back in the 1980s). One that my wife and I frequented barely had room for us and our toddler because of the giant stack of speakers. Dire Straits had just released their Brothers in Arms album, and the shop owner played it over and over, day after day. He never got tired of Dire Straits and neither did we. Good memories of sharing life with my spouse who recently passed away.

🌬🌬🧡🧡🧡🔥🧡🧡🧡🌬🌬 .. this is a ""Wowwwzer" song. The studio version was played all the time on the radio stations in the 80s .. It had the vibe of going out in a Saturday night .. told from some London boys. But .... this live version is a total ripper. The bass is flowing .. the drums are just incredible and then Mr. Mark Knophler just shredding the lead guitar and lead vocals. He is loved by all the great guitarists because of his unique style and the ease he has all the time. Just an incredible band , and I hope you more of their songs. ... like Brothers In Arms - Your Latest Trick - Walk Of Life - Romeo & Juliet 🎼🎼🎼🔶️🔶️🔶️🔥🔶️🔶️🔶️🎼🎼🎼

@@MaddyReactions as @chris6770 alludes to, Mark Knopfler is also a highly accomplished film composer. If you've ever seen the much-loved movie The Princess Bride then you'll have heard an example. The whole soundtrack was written by Mark and performed by himself and keyboard player Guy Fletcher (who joined Dire Straits shortly after the Alchemy Tour and is still part of Mark's band to this day). The only exception is the song that plays over the end credits which was written and performed by Willy DeVille and arranged by Mark. Mark was friends with Willy and realised the song would be perfect for the film. He was right; it was nominated for an Academy Award but lost out to (I've Had) The Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing.

6:55 Mark Knopfler turns and looks at the drummer as if asking how on earth did he keep up with him. Well, the answer is easy ( at least for me). He is Terry Williams, one of the greatest drummers ever to step on a stage. And yes, Mark Knopfler can make any guitar sound beautiful. He can make you smile from ear to ear or cry your eyes out. Take a leap of faith and listen to the rest of this concert, specially Telegraph Road. It's such a whirlwind of sounds that will leave you in awe.

Lead guitarist, lead vocalist and songwriter Mark Knopfler is actually left handed and he doesn't use a pick, it's all fingers and thumbs. Maddy, you mentioned Mark's vocals. I think he likes the music he writes to take centre stage so maybe doesn't concentrate too much on his vocal delivery as many other's might do...but I still think he has a unique style, kind of Dylan like. I think he's a genius in what he does and the band made so many wonderful songs down the years. I hope you react to some more of their work for all of us real soon. 🙋‍♂ ❤ 🙋‍♂ ❤ That's me subscribed!

Brothers in arms by dire straits is still one of my all time favourite songs- the lyrics, the meaning, the music, his vocals cannot be replicated as it would never feel anywhere near the same with anyone else singing it

You picked the best live version of Sultans Of Swing by Dire Straits. Mark and the Drummer were OP imo

Great reaction again, Maddy. I've heard this song many many times over the years and never thought about it being a mix of blues and surf music. That's a very unique perception.

Mark Knopfler and the band Dire Straits picked up from Led Zeppelin and became one of the truly great British rock troubadours. Must be something in the water there.
