Thanks for the great review of this stunning watch Peter. I ordered mine from Peter at Define watches on Sunday and it arrived today. I have owned many watches but the 39mm hanhart 417ES 1954 it is truly an exceptional watch and possibly the best. I have to agree that Peter from Define watches provides the best buying experience of any dealer I have ever bought a watch from. An honest bloke who makes sure the buyer is always happy. I have purchased quite a few watches from Peter at Define watches, and I cannot rate Peter and the service he provides highly enough. The best online watch buying experience available. Thanks again for the excellent review. Kind regards, Darryl

This is why I love watching certain watch channels. Though not a fan of chronographs on the whole the enthusiasm exhibited on this channel would make a stick stuck in the ground on a sunny day seem to be a luxury item. Look forward to the next review 👍

Love it! Will definitely be buying the 39mm option! I was holding off pulling the trigger on the 42mm because I was just hoping a 39mm version would be coming out. I have a larger wrist (19cm), but the historical accuracy of the 39mm makes it the obvious (imo) choice.

Another cool feature of this piece reviewers seem to miss is that the width of the red mark on the bezel is the width of one minute on the minute track. Just a stunning amount of thought and engineering put into this.

I’ve had mine (flyback) for almost two months and I’ve only taken it off to wind it and to bathe. It’s my favorite watch of all time. I have the 39mm fly back custom with all black dial like the non fly back version shown here by Peter Kotsa. Made by Hanhart for Peter Petzold at Define. My wrist is 7.6” and the 39mm is perfect. Pure class. While it is the column wheel flyback chrono it doesn’t say flyback on the dial…just like the originals didn’t. I heard Hanhart will be making this custom non panda fly back version available to the general public eventually. EDIT: I love this watch not because of Steve McQueen, but because 1- it’s simply a beautiful watch, and 2- it’s the/a Bundeswehr watch. You can find this watch, and many others, in the standard reference work on German Military watches in the book: Militäruhren. Die Uhren der deutschen Streitkräfte 1870 bis 1990 - Konrad Knirim Also, a new English version is by the title: German Timepieces: 150 years watches and clocks of German Forces by the same author.

I decided to treat myself to my 417 ES about 18 months ago. Waiting time was a couple of months, but it was really worth the wait. I love it. I was vaguely aware of the McQueen connection when I started checking out Hanhart, but that factor didn't influence my decision. It was Hanhart's history of being a manufacturer of great time pieces which was important. I have no connection to Hanhart other than being a happy customer.

I had the Revolution/Rake bronze 42mm 417 ES. The chronograph using a Sellita base hand wound movement enhanced by Hanhart is bullet proof and the build quality and finishing is excellent as is the bund strap. This is a watch that is punches well above its price and puts many more expensive chronographs to shame. The absence of a date complication and manual wind is a plus IMO.

Really interesting seeing a 39 and 42 of the same watch side by side, it's amazing that a measly 3 mm makes so big a difference. Most of my watches are 44 and 45 mm divers, that's my comfort zone. Then I saw a 40 mm diver that I really liked and it works perfectly fine on my wrist. But the 38 mm watch I got recently just looks too small for me, I don't wear it much. As for the Hanhart's in this video I think the bund strap plays a trick, the 42 seems too big for the strap, while the strap helps the 39 look slightly bigger. The 42 should be a no brainer for my preferences but the 39 looks a bit leaner..

Pretty cool. As u may know, TGV had a collaboration with Hahart to make a special limited edition version of this called the 417 ES Red Lion. The only thing different I could visually see is the red reset chronograph pusher, which is a nice touch. Other than that, not sure there's really much else different than that from this version. Very cool watch. I love me some excellent value and designed chronographs. Considering where this one sits in the market, it's quite a good one if you're in the market for this particular chronograph design with some great heritage and associations.

I’m happy to say Peter I managed to secure one a couple of weeks ago! 😅 As you’re also a mad Steve McQueen NUT like me, you’d be aware, as most fans of Steve’s penchant for motorcycles, Triumph in particular & enduro riding/racing. Watch his movie “On Any Sunday”!🤤😍I’m not sure like yourself when Steve acquired his Hanhart but he did wear it in 1964 in East Germany in the ISDT, or International Six Days Trial, representing the USA. As mentioned, he chose the watch & wore it mostly during his life, contrary to his association with Rolex submariner or the Heuer Monaco. Apparently the watch at some point just disappeared. Imagine getting hold of that Grail?😱Anyway mate I’m waiting with bated breath for mine!🙏🏻👍🏼😎

Enjoy it mate. I'm envious! I'm saving for mine as of now! (I just received a pretty schmick UG Polerouter on Thursday - that was was fairly substantial purchase for me). I've wanted a Hanhart for *years* but always thought the sub dials were a little off on the 42mm. I was stoked to hear about the 39mm release. On Any Sunday is cracking film, hey? Mcqueen was a freak; his ability in the saddle *and* behind the wheel - as well as being one of the actors/icons of his generation? Like many men who grew up rough, he was no saint - but obviously had a good heart judging by his charity work etc. All this McQueen talk, think I might watch The Getaway tomorrow! 😁

I've lusted after this one since I saw it on TGV's channel and I would pick the 39mm, no doubt about it. 39mm chronos are, to me, the ideal size. Yes, they look "small" on my 7" wrist, there is plenty of skin visible beyond the lugs but I don't care, it is what I like. And the manual winding - that's the whole idea, part of the charm. Makes living with the watch a very tactile experience. Not too sure about the bund though, I haven't liked any I've tried. I'd probably take that part off and wear it as a regular strap.

Been deliberating on this watch for 18 months or more. Then the 39MM came out and whilst I like bigger watches, I also like 'classics' to be as original or true as possible. So the 39mm was swaying, but now seeing one important points it's made up my mind. The 39mm is 20mm lug width, not the strap option killing 21mm of the 42. I will have to wait longer for the 39mm though.

Hi, I wish Hanhart would have released the 39mm before the 42mm! I didn’t understand their explanation about a more modern re.issue of the 417es. As you said - everyone was waiting for a true re.issue of this watch! I’m afraid Hanhart isn’t going to swap my 42 for the 39… 😔 Best regards, Claus

Amazing, I'm 68 y/o, this is the first time I've heard of them (shame on me!). Only Rolexes....16013, 16233, 16234 and my Explorer 114270.

If you like this, but want a more interesting chronograph and a step up in quality, check out the Girard Perregaux 2598 in black. No longer produced, but available pre-owned.

The 42mm all the way for me as I prefer the extra real estate. Nice touch with the extra shots at the end but where was the Oompah music to go with it?

All good, no offence taken about the smaller watch. Personally I like watches from 44mm down to 38mm. I think if your comfortable with a size that suits your wrist, then who am I to tell you what is right or wrong 🙏 As for ranting, fell free to express how you honestly feel 👍 Cheers

While it's nice that they made a smaller version, the sundials are better placed on the 42mm imo.

I like it, i just wish It was a different color. I have enough black in my collection and it may be just my style of collecting watches, but I'm trying to have color variety. Sadly most vintage inspired / reissued watches are black.
