Shout out to Adam Mock. There are many ways to judge the quality of a man. But watching Adam during his group rides sweeping for stragglers back and forth and chatting with the people in the back tells me everything I need to know. And it's in our moments of need that those people matter most. I'd be half the man I am today without the influence of my mentors from surfing and BMX growing up.

"Things don't bounce back as they use to". Boy, that's an understatement lol. I'm a bit past my mid-forties but came to terms with that statement in my early 40's after many mtb wipeouts. I feel that as a routine rider we tend to forget that we're still susceptible to common things that non-riders are.... regardless of how fit we are. Good your heart is normal and you're still able to hit the trails. Good stuff!

Thank you for sharing your story and very scary! I have heart issues myself and diagnosed with AFIB and SVT. Brushing my teeth in the bathroom one night, I got dizzy and woke up in my Wife's arms. My heart-rate went through the roof, my blood pressure dropped, passed out and feel backwards hitting my head on the wood flooring. I was concussed and taken to the doctor to find out my AFIB and SVT issue. I had 2 unsuccessful heart ablations and a heart monitor implanted in my chest. I'm on daily medication to treat my AFIB/SVT and see my cardiologist regularly to monitor my condition. Watching your video brought back these memories and puts everything in perspective. I'm fortunate to be a husband and a Dad of an amazing daughter and son. Just seeing and being with my family is a daily gift I don't take for granted and fuels my motivation. Good luck and thank you again for your video.

I have to admit I do not like Alcohol. It's poison. I know everything in moderation but the drinkers I know don't get that rule. Glad to hear everything turned out good for you man. At 58 I feel your struggle. Like someone else posted, eat right, sleep at least 7 hrs a night and stay active and most of all stay hydrated! LMNT in your water really helps with that. Take care and enjoy your life!🙏🏽 Great video!

This was a very compelling video. Thanks much. I can relate. I'm a very much older rider. my first MTB ride was 1987. In those near 40 yrs I've had a few 'take stock of life' moments but few as harsh as weeks ago during a beautiful Good Friday afternoon MTB ride. Luvin' life, scooting down a fave but unremarkable trail in the mountains near Vancouver BC. Full speed over a modest drop only to be de-biked by an invisible, fist sized rock followed by massive slam into rocky sidehill. Broken ribs, smashed shoulder, slammed head and a right hand destroyed by the brake lever. A delerium filled self rescue to the trailhead where my wife waited + picked me up as I collapsed. Fast drive to ER, bones dangling from the hand, unable to breath from busted ribs, nurses carried me into triage. IV fluids, tetanus shot, ER Doc + Medical students with portable U/Sound looking for internal bleeding + pneumothorax, CT scan for brain bleed ... 4 weeks on I'm doing a lot of rethinking, but in truth, it's not the first time. Peace + healing to you Bro'

While I love this data (and have been wearing my Fenix for 5 years) the HR monitoring features were definitely the biggest contributor to anxiety for me. Turning off the HR and sleep tracking for a few weeks help me reset.

@@ovtj interesting - i found some things in max HR that didnt make total sense to me for some time but eventually led me toward zone 2 training to work on increasing endurance and less of the 'weekend warrior' going all out infrequently. im not significantly fitter and everything but my HR, endurance, fitness make more sense to me and i'm always interested in the metrics to see if im getting closer to what i want to accomplish for fitness vs ET. btw, i was prehypertensive for a long time but after losing weight, BP came down, but there was about a year lag as i remember

@@MTBMOR it is easy on a trnr, but there is only so much of that i like. i get into if for awhile in the NE winter. on trail - i am unable to stay zone 2 on hard climbs, but i'll rest as very much as i can on other parts;literally granny gear paced pedalling in flattish area and plain out walk some climbs and rest until recovered until low zone 2 etc. i'll just stay out and keep doing this for hours with an overall avg high zone 2 in the end and hardly any zone 5.. my local rides are up/down all over the place with no elevation over 200'. my goal is trying to train up zone 2, reduce recovery times, build endurance with no real concern what others think

@@MTBMOR the watch and just looking at data,... initially, i wondered about my high max rates while WindSurfing. crazy high numbers for my age - does it mean super fit or something??? no idea, but then i noticed after WS, my resting HR was quite higher for hour, hours depending. my interpretation for high max rates is heart and control system are receiving the call for greater flow, but is not strong enough to get full stroke and faster rate, so it does what it can and just gets faster and faster, but that's an uphill battle, like slapping the water trying to move the blood out. how would a muscle respond to that kind of use? the high rate hours after,... i interpret as the heart muscle is literally tired and unable to achieve the flow it usually does at that 'demand' and so again, is doing what it can to make up for it by trying to go faster. my hope is to train the low rates to try and improve the length of time it is able to do that work before getting tired and resorting to higher rates. hopefully develop a healthier heart muscle type

Yeah, I was getting dehydrated without being aware of it until I fell waking up one morning. Ended up in the hospital too. My heart was ok too. Now I try to drink more water and gave up coffee (cause it’s diuretic) and found green tea to do better (though they say it’s diuretic too). God bless you, you are an inspiration. I’m now in my 50’s and can’t do the mountains I used to do. Recently I restored a vintage touring bike and now I kind of use it as a gravel, and I’m really enjoying it. I feel like a kid again.

@@TheOutsiderMTB Your channel was on my KZfaq as a suggestion view. I'm a 53 yrs. young :) female who is pretty active. I've been into health and wellness since my early 20's when I was really sick. I had days that I was not able to get out of bed. God was w/me guiding me into truth and knowledge of how to heal and keep going after I was healed w/the major issues I had. Healing in a process for sure because there are so many levels that need it: spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. I have low blood pressure and need salt to bring me back up at times when it's too low, or so it doesn't get too low. There have been a few times where I was close to fainting and felt out of it, I ate some salt (I've learned to carry it w/me) and it brought me back up out of that very dangerous low immediately. Fruits are really important for hydration and good salt is necessary too for electrolytes. Ava Janes Kitchen has the best salt from Mexico w/out any microplastics. Celtic Salt is supposed to be good also, but I do not know if they test for microplastics. Higher protein intake is of benefit also. We do need to take care of ourselves, your kind of situation will help one do that. Take good care.

Glad you're doing alright, dude! Seriously, wax philosophical all day long. Just be you. With age comes some wisdom (we hope at least :D) I can completely understand. I'm a little older than you (54) and have had several major health scares since 2020. After the first (several metabolic disorders), I got determined to get healthy and lost a bunch of weight and really started to put the miles in (mtb, road, gravel). Then last September, I got invited to the club that no one ever asks to join--cancer. Thankfully caught early but I needed major surgery and radiation treatment after. I've recovered well and back ridingl, but dang, your getting philosophical and recognizing that you've changed just resonates with me. Anyway, again, glad that you're alright and back in the saddle. Really enjoy your vids and since I live in the IE, the list of places to go ride continues to grow each time you post a vid :)

Tony, I am so glad to hear you're doing better and are back on the bike. It was wild listening to you talk about this, as tomorrow April 9th will mark 7 years since I had what is called a widow-maker heart attack right in my own driveway, just washing my wifes car. Pretty much the same thing, just go, go, go, not drinking enough water, the only difference was I was also smoking, along with stress from life. You have a great plate form to continue to share your story about your wake-up call and help others avoid a heart attack. Life is very short and tomorrow is never promised. Thanks for sharing your story. I had a similar event around 6 months ago and it definitely left a lasting impression. As a healthy 30 year old, I had random bouts of elevated HR, palpitations, and heartburn. I never have more than 1 cup of coffee a day (even stopped for a few weeks) and only 1 beer a week. I found myself in the ER for the first time where they told me the same thing (you aren't dying and your heart is fine). Since then, I've had random stints of anxiety and panic attack symptoms that I definitely did not feel before! It was important for me to realize these feelings are a vicious cycle of the mind feeding the body and the body feeding the mind. Things can spiral quickly. I have gotten help through daily guided mediations (10 mins), breathing exercises and focusing how to better respond to stress.

Glad you are feeling better. I’ve had cardiac issues (chemical exposure as a Firefighter), so I can totally relate. Hydration is CRITICAL for a normal heart rhythm. As you know, alcohol and caffeine will cause dehydration, and when your electrolytes get out of control, you will feel weak and faint. Drink water first thing in the morning and throughout the day. Add a small amount of creatinine to the water and you’ll be good for a workout. I will add you to my prayer list. Take good care of yourself, you’ve got a lot time left on this earth.

I really appreciate hearing a conversation around health anxiety. I'm a bit of a hypochondriac and unfortortunately, one with some heart problems himself, it's a combination that spirals quickly. I'm glad to hear your doing well and everything checks out. I had to go back for several halters and a lot of ekg's before I was able to get a diagnosis and since then I've basically stopped drinking (maybe 1 or 2 a month) and significantly cut back on coffee (2 cups a day). It definitely helped inspire me to take better care of my body, even though it may not change outcomes, it helps with the anxiety. Feeling like I'm doing as much as I can gives me a sense of control over outcomes, even if it isn't necessarily true haha.

Bro. Been following your channel for a few years. We even crossed paths once at cooks corner parking lot. I’ve always been healthy, grew up playing hockey and picked up mountain biking as a Covid rider in 2021. Been loving it ever since. But in January this year I had a gnarly health scare after eye surgery, had a bad reaction to medications that were prescribed to me off label, had gnarly panic attacks and sleep anxiety, didn’t sleep for days at a time. I had an ensuing kidney infection from it, did the whole heart monitoring thing for a couple weeks, and tons is anxiety and ptsd like you describe in regards to uncertainty of my health. Had to take a ton of medical leave from work. I’m still dealing with it to this day. But I’m back to exercising and back to work and things are slowly getting better. But what I realized is yeah we have to share our experiences. I shared with all my friends and family what I went through and it’s been helping a lot. Started therapy for the first time in my life, (because I’ve been through a lot of trauma but just kind of always brushed it under the rug). I’m sorry to hear you had a health scare too, but we got this bro. We’re all in this together and I’ll never again take my health for granted. We’ll put this all behind us and be stronger for it. Hope to see you out on the trails sometime. Peace and love 👊

Good to hear from you. Sorry you had to deal with this. It's fine to "air out" your thoughts on here. I am familiar with the loop, being a Huntington Beach resident. Not to one up you at all... 2017 at 58 years of age, I was DX with (what the fuck?) MS. By 2019 my legs were too weak to ride, let alone walk much any more. I have had a couple of spinal fusions since then as well. So, there's that. I am happy to hear you are healthy and aware of your needs. Stay strong my friend.👊🏼 God bless.

Yeah one of my issues is remembering to drink water if it wasnt for the pills I need to take I wouldnt get much. I can relate to the coffee drinking and then drinking a few beers and not drinking any water . Happen this past weekend realized havent really drank much water last couple of weeks. when weather is cool or cold more coffee than anything else and alcohol. Time to switch up gets some healthy liquids in and start riding again. Prbly gonna do that Monroe trail bfr it rains on sat. Appreciate you sharing your personal experience. I remember when I was in my forties saying I have to get in shape bfr my 50s. I did. then stopped . Been A fan of the old videos of showing us the trails APRECIATION STATION ! Thanks again

Been thru exactly what you described. Went to the ER and they ran test. They and I came to the conclusion I was under stress, fatigue, and anxiety. I was a total mess. Chest pains, shortness of breath, dizzy….. I had to take a few steps back and not let stuff get to me. Feels so much better. Riding is the only thing that keeps my anxiety in check.

I was told by my GP during a physical that I had had a heart attack in the past. It took me 2 months to get an appt. with a cardiologist and he told me I was fine but the whole time until then the waiting created a lot of anxiety. The dehydration is no joke, took a 30+ mile ride with no water and had a fasting blood test the next day - those results came back bad but were wrong because of the dehydration. I am over 60 and have a resting heart rate under 50 bpm because of my fitness level, that freaks doctors out too. Good luck on your health journey, small changes over time lead to big results. Big changes quickly usually don't take.

Based on what you said, you probably had a ZioPatch or some other form of telemetry. First of all, to wear that device, deserves huge props cause it is not easy to use. You should ask your M.D. to send you for a CT-Calcium Score of the heart just to make sure. that study measures any calcification of your artery's.

many many years ago, the morning after a hard bike ride, i got out of bed to shut off the alarm clock across the room. immediately after shutting off the alarm clock i passed out, fell to the floor and hit the side of my head. i didn’t lose consciousness or anything but later that morning part of my ear turned black. i was so worried that i was going to have cauliflower ear, i made an appointment with my dr the next day. i told her how worried i was about my ear getting disfigured.. she asked for the story… and stopped me at the “i passed out part” … she said “you passed out??” “that’s the part you should be worried about” 😂 every thing was fine, that was 15 years ago when i was in my mid forties

Hey Tony, I know the feeling. I am 56 and just got into mtbing last August (nothing like what you do). By the end of September, I had my first wreck. I ended up at the urgent care with a torn meniscus in my left knee and a sprained left wrist. Obviously, I had to take time off from work. During that time, my head went to the exact same place as yours did. What if I have to have surgery, what if I don't heal 100% and the Doctor puts me on disability, how would I survive? and on and on and on. By the grace of God, my knee healed pretty well, not 100% but good enough. I was able to get back to work fairly quickly and I still enjoy riding my mtb (along with my city bike). These events are just another part of life. Take care of yourself, because nobody is going to treat you as good or bad, as you treat yourself.

Less E bike, more leg powered bike will help. Hikes and jogs up some trails will help even more, at least with the blood pressure. Gotta really push it a bit at a time of course. Ain't judging or hating, but I see too many really overweight and out of shape dudes up all over on their E bikes and then drinking brews after the ride 😂. All good, but idk man. Just in my case, the grind up makes the DH so much more rewarding and I'm healthier overall. I'm 37,work graveyard, get out at 6am and on Sundays go directly to the trails on no sleep from the previous day since Saturday night is my Monday. Been doing that for years now. I struggle, especially after a whole night of hard work, but I still keep up with the homies, albeit, I'm usually one of the slowest up hill, but always make it and pushing it harder every day. Ride safe brother! 🤘🏽💀🤘🏽Oh, drink a lot of water 🤘🏽

Had a very similar experience last year. Was having palpitations on the couch late at night watching TV after having a beer with dinner. At times I felt like my heart would stop. Went into a doom spiral, and was suddenly terrified I might die any moment. My mother takes high blood pressure meds and I have a dozen aunts and uncles I never met because they all died before 60 of heart atrack or stroke. Went to my GP, had full blood work, everything came back within tolerances. Blood pressure elevated a little, not enough to be considered high blood pressure though. Referred to cardiologist. He was concerned about my family history, so he ordered another blood workup, because cardiologists look for things GP's don't. Found 4x the amount of lipoproteins and alipoproteins as usual. That's bad, those cause plaques. HDL was off the charts for my age though, 55, that's good, it's what a retired athlete might have. Ordered a heart monitor; only found one irregularity in 2 weeks. Ordered a 256 slice, a highly detailed MRI of your heart in 256 planar slices. Surprisingly, it came back with 0% plaque. Cardiologist described my heart and lungs as "perfect". In the meantime, I had been "scared straight" and no longer drank at night and was hydrating more, and eating more veg. The symptoms had by now disappeared already. Moral of the story: when you get old, things that used to be suggestions become mandatory for good health. Don't brush your teeth often enough, you could die. Don't hydrate enough, you could die. In my case, I found stretching reduced symptoms as well, which apparently is a thing because when you are stiff, it's harder for your heart to move blood. So don't stretch, you could die. But if you do all those things, everything's peachy.

After several times failing on quitting caffeine, I finally was able to quit, it took over 6 months for the withdrawal to go away. As for drinking, I’m on the plan you have now, only drink occasionally, never during the day and only 1-2 beers when I do. Sounds like arrhythmia. You should see an Electrophysiologist. It sometimes takes a trigger to utilize an accessory pathway, but once your does it will continue to utilize it. We put catheters in the heart to try to mimic what triggers the accessory pathway. Not saying you have one, but don’t dismiss what happened as a fluke. Keep seeking answers.

Bro, I get it it’s the electrolytes and water 100% BUT you should be looking at the diet, we in the mtb community fuel with the worst ultra processed stuff. You gotta get a fasting glucose AND a fasting insulin, chances are you are pre diabetes and you don’t know it. Frequent snacks, Gatorade, big carb dinners catches up with everyone and if you’re already on BP meds it’s even more important. I’m 58 years young been low carb since 52 and I’m still riding the TWE, Palisades Plunge and doing enduros for fun, just went carnivore and my labs are stellar but you gotta start now. Get a CAC to make sure you are no forming calcium in the arteries. Time to get on it.

Tony, I'm a few laps ahead of you in life. Let me tell you this, if you sat at home for weeks wearing a monitor and not doing much it doesn't surprise anyone that nothing shows up. You should insist on a stress test and if it shows anything ask for an angiogram. You have to be your own patient advocate, I am and it may have saved my life. My past work in the medical equipment engineering field gave me a little more insight that I'm passing on to you. Good luck and limit the Ebike to 1 in 7. Art

Meh, you're fine. If you're on a diuretic type anti-hypertensive, then yeah, probably it's a good idea to hydrate more. You probably passed out due to orthostatic hypotension from standing too fast, and the heart palpitations probably made that worse because the blood was pooling in your heart ventricles and not getting pumped out.
