I don't know about that, I'm almost 40 and starting up my S4 is pretty disappointing compared to my Hellcat. I do however know which one my neighbors prefer that I drive!

oem systems last forever. AWE just keeps falling apart from the noise and vibrations. I have repaired mine and now the middle can is rattling. They are straight pipes.

I am curious what you decide, as I am shopping for an exhaust for my B8 S4, I am just looking to do intake (ECS), tune (APR stage 1), and exhaust (undecided), I am considering AWE touring (resonated) or ECS (valved, resonated)

Im tellin you.... With test pipes, replacing the OEM center and baby resonators with 2 resonated X-Pipes is cheap ($200 in parts), stock quiet +10% when driving around, and nice and decent loudness when you go WOT. No drone. No rasp from the outside. And cheap. (I have vids on my channel demonstrating this)

I put Borla exhaust on B 8.5 and it’s not too loud at all. But in sport Dynamic mode it sounds amazing

Just recently installed an OBX HP eBay exhaust on my 2013 S4 and for a $700 setup it honestly sounds great. No drone on the highway, louder than stock but not nearly as loud as awe. The fitment was absolutely perfect and it has a great appearance compared to stock. To be completely honest it sounds a lot like an R35 GTR (and I have personal experience with GTR’s to support that claim). I’m very happy with it for the price and I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a budget exhaust that still produces great sound without sounding trashy or collecting too much attention.

I swear, I’ve seen some these 2013 stangs and beyond sound a little R35 GTR’ish, then I go look and its a Mustang and im like wtf? Lol, but ofc, not stock GTR a modded one. Not a far fetched comment, bro, lol.

On E46 M3's when people would change to a louder exhaust or get headers, they would be crazy raspy. People used to swear up and down that a rasp-x resonator would get rid of 99% of the rasp. I remember them being sold just like any other resonator, individually. So I'm sure you could get one and add it to your AWE touring setup!

Thank you. I was waiting for the results of this experiment. I want the JHM setup just to reduce the chances of plugging cats when I tune the car. I figured I would do that and not shell out an additional chunk of money for the rest of the exhaust system. I did figure you would end up with more sound than you did though. Maybe remove part of the stock exhaust? If that doesn't work, I'd be curious to see what the ECS valved exhaust would do with this setup.

I went with 7 different exhausts on my last s4 with headers The exhaust i put on it to sell it was Headers Apr dp's to use the long resonators and has a x pipe up front Then into a stock rs5 exhaust that i cut the s4 mufflers and bumped the inlets to 2.5in to slip on the rs5 exhaust It sounded pretty damm good No rasp when warmed up and only a tiny bit until the exhaust gets hot. I sold the car to my brother so ill take a video

I love it quiet a lot but I have 3.5 inch duel piping with x-pipe( no mufflers etc ) on my 2015 Audi s4 and she sounds mean. No rasp but the drown on the highway can get annoying but she sounds good when shifting and down shifting.

I’ve got the scorpion here in the uk, I’m catted though so don’t know how that would effect it. It’s not much louder than stock, maybe 10% but the tone is 100x better than stock

Im running testpipes on stock s4 exhaust and added in a Mercedes c63 resonator up front with header wrap on dp's Took all the rasp away and still alittle louder then stock s4 with cats Had 7 different exhausts on my last s4 and on this s4 i wanted quiet with smooth mellow tone and ive found it with this setup! Will post a video and drop a link here sometime this week

Just want a comfortable, quiet drive but also be much faster than and/or able to outperform any vehicle comparable to mines.....just my outlook to modifications.

I did IE stage 1 93 octane file when they had their black friday sale. Now my cats are stinking it up when I get into it on the hwy. So im in a similar situation. I want a better sound than stock and would do the ecs valved but im worried my cats will go soon. Definitely don't want test pipes if It can be helped but the consensus is that aftermarket cats don't even do as good a job as OEM cats on these cars. But cat job is big money and they may fail quickly with the tune.

It’s basically a straight pipe to muffler. It’s definitely not designed for test pipe cars. Also if you remember in the summer I heard the exhaust in prototype form - you best bet I check it out when it came out

Stock with x-pipe only is the happy medium for me...quiet when just cruising around, minimal drone, can hear a little rasp here and there when you get on it, but overall sounds really good!

I have just the full AWE Touring exhaust on my B8 S4 and the sound is perfect, just loud enough from the outside but quiet enough on the inside.

I have a stock exhaust with a resonated X-pipe on my s5 and it sounds great. When driving it’s hardly any louder then stock but hit the loud pedal and it’s got a nice rumble and noise with virtually no rasp. Maybe try that?

When/if ECS release their valved muffler only, chop off AWE mufflers and weld ECS on to AWE touring and I think it might be ok.

Dude, do a custom valved setup. Soo many universal kits out there. You dont have to get one specificly for the s4. But its do-able. plus you will get the happy medium. I totally understand you feel. I did the same valve setup on my MK7 GTI, everything is stock, but welded in a valve setup inside the muffler. Its totally stock and a 1st in my opinion.

This is why i only went with lower downpipes for my Q50. Exhaust is so much noise and not much gains. U can do spirited driving without the whole world knowing

You got some friends up with ECS you should ask them about the valved setup. Better yet see if they will just sell the valved muffler. I'm running the x-pipe mod with the magnflow res and would love to install just the valved muffler. I've heard the ECS valved catback setup in person and with the valves closed it stock level quiet.

Need stock cats currently to do ECS valved. Lots of folks complained on the forum when they said no go for test pipe setups.

Rob Phillips I have the ecs resonated setup and nowhere does it say you have to have stock cats. That’s the whole reason why I went that route. I had awe touring and was way too loud once I put high flow cats on

test pipes, 2.5" magnaflow resonated xpipe up front, 2.5" magnaflow dual straight thru for the center, magnaflow single in-out straight thru for the rear. The only good setup for the S4, trust

Check out the Armytrix exhaust, I want one for my b8.5 S4. It has valvetronic so it can be very quiet and loud. It also can send data to your phone through the OBD2 dongle that comes with it. It's expensive but definitely worth looking at.

I think you’re right. If you want to reduce noise or defiantly rasp you gonna have to add a resonator. Best place might be to a small resonater to the downpipes maybe? If not, Could go for a custom resonator in each exhaust pipe after it splits maybe? Be interesting to see where you with this!

What about ecs new exhaust I’m looking at that for my s4. I’m APR ultra charged and my next step is exhaust and Im strongly considering moving to IE because of you. Thanks for that by the way. I’m going to do a little more research before jumping on any exhaust I cant find exactly what I want but ecs is at the top of my list right now for exhaust. Just a thought.

This is a long time out, but @andy brikha I have the ECS valved and it's perfect when the valves are closed - a little louder than stock, but absolutely no drone. When you open the valves up however it's LOUD, but it's nice to have that option.

Quiet is the way to go with the 3.0T. They sound too much like VQ's, which are about the worst sounding cars ever made imo. I wish there was an AWE ultra quiet that would serve between stock and the touring. I'd imagine they'd sell very well, I've met many people who are on the same page.

I would buy it. I had a great sounding aggressive exhaust for the last 10 years. Gets old if that is your daily driver instead of a cruise night type 2nd car. Right now what im really looking for is something that is high flow enough to go ultracharger without getting any drone at all especially around 80mph, and a very subtle exhaust note.

Or you could sell the AWE and get a Polo performance exhaust they sound amazing and I hear they sound pretty quiet inside the car. I tried to find the IE crackle tune, I'm running Apr stage 1 but I'd like to stack the crackle tune on top

Try the scorpion resonated system I have with Euro code test pipes and the least drony exhaust system out there also you get so much more supercharger whine but my charger is also ported might be that that gives abit more whine

magnaflow res X pipe is the best option for killing rasp/drone, i know you have the downpipes but the magnaflow X in the baby res spot sounds great

This thread is ancient, but everybody here was just yapping, and few questions were ever answered. Twice was the question: Is the car running testpipes, JHM catted/baffled downpipes and stock catback (?). That would be nice to know since it was a tolerable sound at hwy speeds.
