A flail mower is a great solution if you want to get chopped grass that you don't have to collect.
The gear we used comes from the Mercedes W220. The gear ratio is around 2.7: 1 which gives us a revolutions of the shaft (at PTO 540rpm) of 1500 rpm.
The project still needs a few days of work as safety guards and paint are missing.

I love this video but using spoons in order to mow is a bad idea the quality of cut is poor this tools is done to be but on an arm in order to clean bush or mowwe some tinny woods. I do not like this tool farmer destroy all neest and birds with because they use it at spring. To cut grass use a disc with finger/ flying Cutter or a reciprocal barre the cut us perfect and you do not kill bugs and other life's in your field.

Fantastic work, I have a humus version of this, they describe it as a mulcher mower. Had a problem with balancing, it was threatening to shake itself apart, solved it the same way you did. They are a fantastic for cutting brushwood, they take a lot of HP though, for cutting grass humus supply a y type cutter which would probably be more suitable and not need as much HP. A person with your skill level would undoubtedly be able to fabricate them

Finally i have found someone who is crazy enough like me to build stuff like this yourself. Awesome ! I do have a few notes about the build . 1) you should have used a normal angle gearbox and not one with a differential of which you block one side. It's not build for this and will fail very soon. 2) I think you should have used belts that were a little shorter. They have to bend too much to tighten them. They will wear out really fast. Other then that. great work !
@RRaucina
@RRaucina Жыл бұрын
Yes belts too short but mainly they need to have a spring tensioner on them. Mine has that and without it, many things can break.

The 3 point linkage needs to be mounted as low as possible so if you hit something the mulcher front will be pulled up to clear it. Being high it will tend to dive down into an obstruction. I've changed a few agricultural attachments like that.

Very well done with everything you built but I believe for that particular stuff making your own blades/cutters would fetch better results as those are more like chisels/flippers for cleaning up forest growth rather than blades for cutting that type of growth (two pieces of strapping joined half way with free ends bent opposite directions). Your build can easily be converted to a number of other things as well (as I'm sure you know though).... nice job man!

Good work. A couple of tips from one driving and building this type of machinws some years. It looks like to low rpm. The result should be clean cut With new v shapes like you have. Also we allways used Rubber mats as protection in The front. In your case It might not matter. Tube for The axel works for easier load. And in your case It might be fine. We always used beefier axles or even solid ones. But we also ran them pretty Hard:) good That you balanced Its key for them to work long term. Have fun and as said If they are well tuned they can esily cut as a lawnmower. Even through thicker brush

Very interested in how well this holds up. WIth that differential axle flange held on one side it's going to I think half the gear increase, but also put a lot of wear on the spider gears that they weren't really intended for. of course, it's also not driving a car!
@FlatBroke612
@FlatBroke612 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I though it strange to drive an axle flange also. You’re right it will reduce the ratio by half driven this way so if the ring and pinion is for example 3:1 his effective ratio is 1:1.5 (speed increase from the PTO). Also the ring and pinion is loaded on its “coast” side. The gears aren’t cut to handle full load in this direction. He could have welded the side gears to the ring gear carrier, drove the differential at its drive shaft then used pulley size to gain the 1.5:1 increase. But as you’ve pointed out, it’s not driving a car. Looks like that tractor is under 30hp. Nice work overall.
@brad3378
@brad3378 Жыл бұрын
I noticed the pinion shaft / spider gear problem also. Pinion shafts and spider gears don't have bearings so those gears are going to eventually bind and snap. A better solution would be to weld the spider gears and let the unused axle shaft spin freely. Another problem, although less severe, is the idler bearing located on the wrong side of the belt drive. Belts can only pull, not push, so it's important to put the idler pulley on the slack side of the belt instead of the tight side. Since there's a lot of rotational mass here, the drive and driven pulleys will change roles during a deceleration event of the engine. For this I would consider using a overrunning clutch on the PTO shaft. Otherwise, I like this design and plan to borrow a lot of ideas for my own someday :)
