Don't let age stop you if you really want to do it. I'm 42, was losing my mind sitting behind a desk all day, so I took the leap and now I'm 6 mths into my 1st yr as an apprentice. I also know a 51 yr old who's going into her 5th yr. I do wish I would've started when I was younger, but I probably would've thrown away the opportunity. Everything happens at the right time. Thanks for the video, very motivating.

I got laid off from Tesla last month May 5th, 2024 after 3 years of hard work with no given notice. I was out of town working for them while this happened btw. I immediately enrolled into school to get my CDL’s because I didn’t want to just sit around and do nothing. My third week into school, the union finally called me back up after 2 years to see if I’m still interested in the program. Well I just finished my OSHA training on Sunday and I’m already starting my 5 year apprenticeship with IBEW Local 11. Long story short, never loose faith and never give up on what you want! Stay true to yourself, put god first and you’ll never loose.

@@steve-o5974 that’s very helpful. Thank you for your reply. Last I checked there is a 3 year waiting period to get into an electrician apprenticeship in my area. I live in Orange County, CA. Because the wait is so long, I’m thinking maybe I should consider trade school in the meantime. What do you think? I suppose I could always stop trade school if I get accepted into an apprenticeship. @@Atomic419 It won’t hurt to go to trade school in the mean time m but just make sure you don’t accumulate any unnecessary debt. I have to retake all the classes that I took in trade school as part of my apprenticeship now which sucks. The bright side is I have a leg up and I’m not stressed in the school side of the apprenticeship. I’m Local 11 in Los Angeles, if you don’t mind having to commute (which almost everyone has to do anyway) then you should definitely apply as it is a much bigger local and they take on more apprentices.

While I think our wages here at Local 48 are relatively great, electrical contractors are definitely are the ones that are making the most profit. I think that if you want to make that kind of money you should look into becoming an electrical contractor yourself. As you said, that's where the real money is at, though it's a lot of time, energy, and quite a bit of risk. Not sure that it's something I'm interested in doing myself.

People say this all the time, “We should make more cause we do all the work while the boss does all the easy work”. Well I say If that were really the case then just start your own business. It’s not easy running a business and theres a huge amount of risk associated with it. It’s only fair that the one taking on all the risk and liability would make more money. Just a thought.

Grass is not greener. There is plus and minus to being the boss vs getting a steady paycheck. I think Stephan said it best, it's not for everyone. Think about it, you first have to e an electrician, the businessman side can't be taught as easily as the trade. Like I say, we're all good at the trade, but we tend to suck at business. I would argue I'm worse as an electrician and better at the business...lol

Right on! I think that's a really great move. As you said, Local 48 is very competitive, and anything extra that you can bring to the table to show that you're the most qualified candidate and best fit for the apprenticeship will go a long way towards helping you get accepted. Keep me posted as you're working your way through the application process and let me know if I can offer any assistance in any way. Thanks for watching! ⚡️

Hey, right on! Good for you for wanting to get into this so early on! The earlier, for a lot of reasons, the better. You will most likely end up having an amazing pension by the time you retire. My advice to you is even if you don’t get accepted right away, if this is something you really want to do, keep trying and you’ll eventually get in. Hopefully you’ll make it in first try though! Thanks for watching and I wish you the best of luck in your electrical endeavors! ⚡️

Applied at 280. Kind of wishing I didn’t even get a degree because despite having it with a loyal work history and a good letter of recommendation, I didn’t rank so good. Currently having trouble finding work in an entry level position related to the trade. If I said I haven’t thought about giving up I’d be lying. My last ditch effort might be moving to a bigger metro area out of state to try something new and see if the markets better somewhere else.

I've been in the Union for a year now as an apprentice, and the biggest benefit in my opinion is having someone to fight for you and back you up when your employer is screwing you over in some way. There are many rules that protect us that the companies must follow. A quick call to the union hall can sort things out when those lines are being crossed.

I thought to myself, I can't work in that kind of weather. I think people in the trades are starting to get hit really hard with the changes in our climate. @@stepanvinnikov6024 I live in a heavy unionized area, not even sure which shops are non union. The US government requires I have a certain income level to support moving my wife to the US until she can get here, as well as having no family in the area to move back in with in order to live with non union apprentice wages. To organize in I’m almost certain you need more than 1500 hour here for the inside wireman program. I’ve been studying theory daily and checking all the time for jobs to be able to reinterview. I never see any non union no experience apprentice jobs either in my area. Glad you made it in, I think everyone’s situation is different. I’d rather get the best education from the IBEW apprenticeship from the start if I can, but if I can’t land a job in the next couple months I will probably have to do what you did.
