I’ve been at the same retail job since 2011 and I’m wanting to put myself in a position where I can solely maintain my family. I’m 31 now and I’m scared to begin something new but I know I gotta do it.

I'm a 44 year old electrician in Australia, I started my apprenticeship in my mid 20 and I thought I was old then! getting my qualification was the best thing I ever did, and it set me up for the rest of my working life, I would do it again at 44 if I needed to, 4 years fly's by these days :( and being a electrician opens up so many other jobs that you wouldn't think of. I've spent most of my career as a mechanical electrician, in short I install machines in factory's and work on elevators, but being able to legal work on electrical equipment makes your future possibility's endless. the last job man will have is repairing the machines lol. don't tell musk I said this lol

Another thing to note here is that while electricians and plumbers are usually at the top of the chain in the trades, people that work with hvac(sheet metal, refrigerants, hvac controls, etc)are right up there in some areas. Trades are a great option for young people these days and it gives more guarantees than other jobs, especially if you go the union route

Hey man, I’m a high school junior and this video is really making me consider becoming an electrician. I was thinking about majoring in computer science in college, but all the programmers I know seem depressed from staring at a screen 40-60 hours a week. I’m looking to work with my hands and get satisfaction out of my work, and being an electrician seems like it could fit the bill. Thanks for the information man. Btw I live in Portland too!

I’m 32 and I’ve been cooking for the last five years, I’m ready for a change. I’m completing my associates in science this year and for some reason I’m fascinated with math, chemistry and problem solving but need to start something soon! I think manipulating electricity sounds freaking awesome. I’m going to be filling out my apprenticeship application tonight!

I just started my career as an aircraft maintenance technician for a major airline. Right now is a great time to get into the industry. A lot of the same reasons he mentions in this video is why I love my job. Plus flight benefits to see the world. I had to study good amount of electricity and it’s very interesting stuff. We learn a lot of different disciplines such as hydraulics, welding, woodwork, composites, engines etc. it never gets boring. My next choice would be to be an electrician but it’s only because it can be kinda scary dealing with that high voltage. Blue collar work is great.

I've been an electrician (loose title) for electric bikes for 6 years. Rebuilding controllers, motors, programming, diagnostics, etc. My company just went under and life is telling me to become an appreciate electrician. These videos helped me with that, and I'm currently searching for companies hiring!

I’m a union carpenter apprentice and the problem is I’m never given enough time to think about a different way or solve the problem because it’s just go go go and you have to just do it the way your told to make money as fast as you can and you don’t learn any other way or express a way that might also work. It’s like you’re stuck to one thing

Edit: Electricians make fantastic money after apprenticeship. Well, after second year. I’m not Union, never wanted to be, don’t plan on ever being Union, so maybe our wages are different in my area due to that as well as geography. Most first years will start at 14/hr or somewhere around there depending on experience in other trades or in other careers. However, once you finish second year, you can really start making good money. I made 21/hr in the end of my second year, in part because of my extended experience that goes a couple years back before I went to school. But also because I show up on time, work hard, I’m a nice guy to work with, and I’m always wanting to learn something new. In my opinion, the hardest part about getting into this career, for me, was getting past the low wages early on. You do a lot of really hard physical work for what feels like pennies an hour. But, trust me, once you get past your first couple years, you will start to take off. You’ll be able to go do work on your own at a job site, and explain to others how you want to do something, instead them telling you what to do. And I think one of my favorite parts about being an electrician, is getting to teach my craft to new people on the job. I love it. I currently work with an older guy than me (he’s my elder by about 20 years) and hasn’t done hardly any electrical work before this job, and I look forward to teaching him something new every day. Something about seeing the person you’re teaching suddenly “click” with a concept and start to understand a difficult concept, is awesome. In fact I like teaching it one on one so much I’ve caught myself teaching my 10 year old nephew on side jobs, concepts that he’s years away from even being able to comprehend, and my wife sometimes has to tell me to shut up because I will just go on and on to her about all this stuff she knows nothing about😂

my dad is an eletrcian and when i was younger he would always bring me to work and i would always watch him pull out his equipment and wire stuff and it would always satisfy me. my family also has our own eletrcian company my grandpa is the boss

I know you mentioned you can't talk about some specifics, but I'm curious to hear about availability of work in renewable energy in your experience with 48. With the national shift in politics and the potential rollout of 'the green new deal' there will/would be a drastic increase in demand for electricians performing work in this sector. I think for this plan to succeed, a drastic increase in quantity of quality training programs for electricians will be necessary. Personally, I'm hoping for both of these to occur as I think it's one of the most meaningful types of work an electrician (or person in general) can perform.

I've been looking into both plumbing and electrical union trades. Ive been in retail for a while now and the 27.5% of journeyman trade in my area scares me a bit. $11.96hr for first year electrical apprenticeship seems kind of low. But on the other hand I don't know the percentage of pay increase every 1000 hours and the end results will definitely blow my GM gig out of the water.

Good luck to anyone wanting to get into the Union without knowing anyone or getting a 100% on the aptitude test. Local 98 (Philadelphia) is around my jurisdiction and they’re an incredible SOB to get into without connections. Great vid nonetheless!

I'm in good physical shape and don't have any health issues yet but I'm wondering if I'm too old to embark on this career. hi so i’m 18 and a female i’m starting the trade school this year, i’m kinda scared 😣 well the main thing i’m scared about is the heavy lifting, i get chest and back inflammation but only when i’m not in the heat of the activity that causes it. like i could be exercising and i wouldn’t feel any pain until i relax. also very scared of ladders… those are my only concerns besides going into a male dominated job as a female edit: also i’m really glad i found your channel, i’m currently taking notes on this stuff. i already applied and got accepted without any test, or i’m not really sure how it works it might just be my state. edit again: i’m mid way through the video and i just love the way you described this and hoping that it’ll be as good an experience as you say ☺️

I don't know what it's like in the US, but in Australia, getting a union trades job, much less an apprenticeship is very difficult. They're never advertised and the people who get them have connections.

Been working in a union for 33 years , luckily been employed about 90 percent of that time, I became an electrician because I wanted to . A lot of people look at just money benefits etc and have no work ethic,one thing I always tell this younger generation it’s going to slow down eventually and most people haven’t seen tough times even 2008 wasn’t that bad. So u have to have passion for what u do if it’s just a paycheck you will ride the bench when it slows down.good luck younger generation .

I'm wanting to become an electrician but I have no idea how I can afford the time it takes for training and apprenticeship. I'm currently a stay-at-home mom and worked in HR before this. But HR jobs want to pay max around 65,000 and they want you to have a bachelor's as well as years of experience. I've got two babies under age 3 so I'm not sure how I could work a job as well as go to school.

I used to look down on bluecollar Jobs but i think that eletrician espacially solar electrcian will most likely be my career path and how i will be earn a decent living for the coming years. Inshallah

Hello, sorry for my username lol. I have a question, if I wanted to become an electrician would any college courses help my chances of getting into an apprenticeship? I live in California and I want to become an electrician but I have no experience or knowledge so the chances of me getting into an apprenticeship might be low, I also need to wait for 2 years since I'm still 17 and raising the money might take a bit so Ima get a part time job. The reason I wanna go to college is because I can apply for aid and I don't want to waste the 2 years doing nothing.
