You're very welcome! It sounds like you probably watched my aptitude test video too which should give you some good guidance for your test. The Khan Academy sections that I mention in that video will really do a good job at preparing you for your test. Also, I would recommend reaching out to the training center/ union that they are applying for and see if they have a packet or anything with sample questions for people taking the aptitude test. Thanks a lot for that! I haven’t looked at that video just yet. But it’s ironic that the training center is holding practice sessions for it on Saturdays of this month, it’s about $300 a session. I’m still waiting for them to contact me to schedule an interview but now is definitely a good time to getting as much studying in as I can

I've tried a few different paths that my school, family and society values pushed me into doing (university courses) and haven't found anything I love and have racked up debt... I've had a few physical jobs and have always felt a high satisfaction at the end of the day and daily interactions with other hard working people.. I'm about to start an apprenticeship at this age which may seem sucky but by the time I'm 32 I'll be fully qualified which is certainly fine.. go for it if you havn't and are still considering it.

@@robtheservantof6257 it can be dangerous, especially if you have no idea what is going on hence why we have the schooling and on the job experience as an apprentice. My advice is to start the apprenticeship before applying to trade school so you can do both at the same time, I didnt do that while all my fellow classmates already had that. That was my mistake. And now I'm completely lost because i learn from hands on activities.

You’ll make it far if you keep this mindset of planning and setting goals for your future. If you haven’t, I’d highly recommend to also start learning about investing (specifically starting a Roth IRA). You’ll be a millionaire easily by the time you retire if you start young. The power of compound interest is pretty amazing. Anyways, little rant there, but I always like to let younger people know about that because I wished that I started investing and learning about finances younger. Hope that helps! No problem! Hopefully my channel can be a good resource for you if you choose to pursue this career. As far as I know that’s a general rule of any labor union. You can definitely double check but your IBEW local and see if it’s something that they willingly allow or what their take on it is, but I know for us here it’s definitely frowned upon. I will say though that with the great wages we have and the overtime opportunities that present themselves, it makes me feel content with not doing side work.

Awesome! Khan academy is great for studying for your aptitude test. I actually don’t think you’ll need to learn anything from the Ugly’s book for your aptitude test. The test is going to be more just general math knowledge and reading. Nothing trade specific. That being said, the Ugly’s books are a great resource and really good stuff to start learning sooner than later since this is a trade that you are getting into.

Hey Ray! Right on! I think a lot of people feel that same way, wishing they got in a little sooner. I got in when I was 22 when I got in and I’m 26 now. 27 is still pretty young to start the trade. I think most of the apprentices who I have class with are actually in their 30’s, with only a few of us being in their 20’s. You’re ahead of most people I know who have gotten into the trade.

Hey Eduardo! Those are great questions. I would first say that I think anyone who was interested in this trade and is willing to put in the work can learn it. I knew absolutely nothing about construction/ the trades before I got into this trade myself. Even when I first started, I felt like everyone else had a good grasp of at least the basics (tools, material, etc) and I didn’t even know the difference between some common tools. With that being said, I would say that while having a good skill set going into this would be beneficial, I think that anyone can develops a great skill set over time. I feel like now I have a very good grasp of things and that I really know what I’m doing, but it just took slowly putting in the time to develop those skills to get here. As far as whether or your you would enjoy this, I would watch my video “20 Things I Love About Being an Electrician.” It’s similar to this video but I expand on and talk about other things more. I’ve met people who got into this trade and didn’t like it, but it seems like the majority of people who get in end up loving it. I personally would say that this is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I think it’s worth pursuing if you are interested in it.

I wish that the pay was higher across the states like we have here. What’s the JW pay there? Is the cost of living relatively low there? It’s pretty expensive to live around here, even if you’re in a not so great area. I’ve found that for the most part the pay scale is relative to the cost of living in the area.

Hey man! According to my local union I’m technically an inside wireman, which is basically just a commercial electrician. The license covers residential, commercial/ industrial, and low voltage. I’m actually not a lineman, though I know linemen generally make really good money. From the research I’ve done I know that electricians here in Portland, Oregon and in Seattle, Washington make a good amount compared to some other states/ locals. Compared to the cost of living it may not be a huge difference though.

Hey, thanks! Are you thinking about moving to the USA to become an electrician or are you thinking about becoming an electrician there? In both cases, the answer is yes. If you wanted to work here then you would probably be required to live here in order to apply. I do know, however, that here we have some programs where electricians can go work abroad in other countries. Those electricians are originally from here though. I'm not sure if they have a program like that in Thailand. I would recommend trying to get in touch with one of the local unions here though if you are interested in working here. Hey Rob! That’s a very valid list of concerns. First I would say that your age is definitely not an issue. I know plenty of apprentices who started in their 30’s and even some in their 40’s. I have heard of some who started in their 50’s. 27 is still on the younger side for sure. Have you looked up the wages in your area to see what the differences in pay would be? If you don’t mind me asking, what are do you live in? Overall I think this is a great and secure career. Some areas/ bigger cities have a lot more work happening so there wouldn’t be as much of a concern for layoffs or anything like that. I’m happy to help answer and follow up questions that you have. Gotcha. Yeah, you would just need to weigh your options and see if you think it would be worth it or not. My brother was in a similar situation where he was making $30ish an hour as a roofer. He just now finally is making more than he used to but it took a couple of years to get to this point. He’s really happy though because of how much less physically demanding and just generally better this trade is. Not to mention that he’ll eventually be making much more than he already is now plus better benefits/ pension.

Hey man! Right on. Good things to be thinking about for sure. I would say that if you aren’t specifically interested in a career that requires some sort of four year degree that you should definitely consider the trades. It’s kind of a two for one deal. When you apply for the apprenticeship you are also applying for trade school. The on the job portion and schooling portion both make up the apprenticeship. I’ve never once regretted my decision to become an electrician and join the trades. It’s a fantastic career and it’s actually something that I enjoy doing. And the pay/ benefit package is pretty killer. Have you looked into the IBEW training center in your area to see what the the pay and everything is like there?

Hey man! Thanks for reaching out! College definitely isn’t for everyone and it’s unfortunate that it’s expected of so many people when the reality is that many who graduate rack up student debt and don’t even use their degrees. It’s also unfortunate that the trades are looked down upon by so many. I’m of course partial to electrical, but plumbing is a great way to go. My dad is a pipe-fitter with the union and he makes $47.44 hour. Currently electricians here make $47.85. You’ll notice that typically electricians and plumbers make similar money. The main different is that electrical you are working with electricity (scary to some and rightly so) and with the other you are working with water. I think generally being an electrician is looked at as more of a profession in the public eye. Both are fantastic careers though. I have to say though, I don’t think I’d want to be a plumber personally. Electricity interests me and being a plumber just doesn’t. Also, you may want to consider taking a class on electrical theory before you drop out because it can really increase your chances of getting in. You can even try to apply for your local IBEW while you are going to school. Just something to consider. Also keep in mind that with the apprenticeship you will be going to trade school (similar to college but the information is much more relevant to your work). Hope that helps! So your trade school is separate from the apprenticeship? My advice, if I’m understanding this correctly, would be to continue with the trade school with the intentions of applying for Local 11 once they start accepting applications. Any schooling that’s trade/ electrical related will significantly increased your chances of getting into the apprenticeship because it will make you a more valuable apprentice. I know it seems like this Covid stuff is forever, but it will pass and life will eventually go back to “normal”. Whatever normal is. So I would just see this time as time to prepare to apply and to make yourself the best possible applicant for the apprenticeship program. That’s a really good question! From my understanding it kind of depends. I think you would need to find out what the electrical codes are in the country/ continent you are thinking of going to and also find out if they would allow a journeyman’s license from the US. The company I work for actually has a specific division that does international work. People who choose to do the international work get all of their travel and housing expenses paid for and usually end up working in US embassy’s over seas somewhere. It’s a pretty cool opportunity.

Wow man, so cool! Thank you for your service! Local 48 is a fantastic local and our training center is known as being one of the best in the nation. Your age wouldn’t be a disadvantage to you in any way. Believe it or not 29 is actually still on the younger side for people who apply for the apprenticeship. I honestly wouldn’t worry about that at all. What I will say though is that since you are a veteran you already have a huge advantage over most people who apply. The IBEW has a huge amount of respect for our veterans and because of that you are very likely to make it in based on that fact alone. I don’t want to say for sure, but I remember hearing something about veterans being moved to the front of the list when they apply, meaning you should get in very quickly after you apply, take your aptitude test, and interview. Don’t hold me to that for sure but I’m pretty sure we do something like that. Anyways, so cool man. Maybe we’ll end up going to school together or even working together some day ⚡️

Hey Adalgissa! I think that’s it’s such a cool thing when we have women join the trade. It’s pretty much a normal thing at this point. The women that I’ve worked along side and also had school with are fantastic and really enjoy this as a career. It’s definitely something where you can work during the morning/ day and then come home and have time to draw or whatever else you want to do. I leave for work at 5ish and get home around 3ish these days. Granted, I work about 45 minutes away from home with traffic. Definitely pursue this if you think you’ll enjoy it. Also, the IBEW really encouraged women to join, so much so that you might even have increased chances of getting in for that fact alone which is awesome. It’s my pleasure! I know in the last few years Local 48 actually set record breaking numbers for hiring on new apprentices. Things are definitely slower right now though during all of this Covid stuff. I’ll get in touch with the training center and see what I can find out for you 👍🏼

Sorry for the delayed response, Ricardo. I got in touch with the training center and got all of the details. So each time that the training center accepts applications, they typically have around 1k people apply. That means 1k people are going in and out of the training center during that time. With all of the safety concerns right now they aren’t accepting applications, having people come in for aptitude tests, or conducting interviews. Especially with the building basically already maxed out (in compliance with CDC regulations) with current apprentices who go to school during the week. With that being said, they are still moving down the list and bringing on new apprentices who have already gone through the whole application process. The hopes are that sometime next year when things simmer down, they will return to business as usual and re-open applications. Hopefully that helps. I know it’s frustrating if you haven’t had a chance to apply, test, and interview yet. This whole thing made things messy for a lot of people.

They definitely try to keep apprentices working throughout their apprenticeship. I would also say that when you are a journeyman there is more of a chance of getting laid off than when you were an apprentice; however, it’s almost fully depended on your performance as how valuable you are to your company. I’ve worked with guys who have never been laid off and have worked full careers in the trade. Time can get rough and unpredictable things happen, but for the most part if you are a good journeyman and you put in the effort every day to do a great job then you won’t be seeing a lay-off.

So far I haven’t been able to find anything out. If I do I’ll let you know though. I would probably try calling the training center/ local and seeing what they can tell you about the program. My honest advice though without even looking into it would probably be to still try to apply for the inside wireman program once they start accepting applications. I just know so many people who have gone through the low voltage program and wished that they did the full inside wireman program. You can always go back to school and sometimes switch programs halfway through, but it’s not an ideal situation and often times that will require a reinterview for the inside wireman program. Either way, I would still try to get a hold of your local and see what they can tell you about the program.

Really? I’m curious about what kind of stories you have heard. My honest opinion of unions is that they are really great, and that’s all based off of personal experience. I truly feel like I’ve been given such an incredible opportunity with the IBEW and find it hard to believe sometimes that I get the quality education that I do, incredible pay/ benefits, etc. I will be making videos talking about the union eventually that I think a lot of people will find very helpful. As far as preparing for your aptitude test, definitely check out my aptitude test video if you haven’t yet. The Khan academy app that I mention in the video is an absolute life saver. You don’t have to be amazing at math, just good enough to pass the test. Math is definitely something that you use frequently in this trade, but it’s not overly complicated and often times you’ll be using the same formulas for calculations.

Love their stuff too! It’s a little bit on the spendy side but the quality is definitely worth it.

If this is something that you’re really interested then I’d really encourage you to get back at it. Like I said in my video, this is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. I was in retail for about six years before I started the trade and I’m so thankful to be out of it. Depending on where you live, if you go the union route then you may be able to do the schooling/ apprenticeship for free. Here in Local 48 everything is completely free. They even give you a really nice complete set of tools for free which is crazy.

Mad Electrician I’ve been with Foodlion and at the same store just a little over 6 years ... my cousin I think he is with a union

Mad Electrician I know I want to learn a trade but at the same time I want to travel.. I was going to school to be a barber it was okay but I can’t see it

Being an electrician can actually allow you to travel if that’s something that you want to do. I know some guys that will take a couple of months or so off in between jobs and go travel somewhere. It’s definitely different than retail because there are no actual shifts to fill, which usually allows for more flexibility. Of course this all depends where and who you work for though.

Mad Electrician so those guys you talking about that’s time off between jobs are they union or non union

I think a lot of jobs get to a point where you’ve pretty much learned all that there is to learn. I think most retail jobs would be that way for starters. With electrical work, it’s so multifaceted that I don’t think any one electrician could learn how to do everything. You could spend a whole career doing either motor controls, plc’s, fire alarm, low voltage, high voltage, residential, commercial, industrial, etc. Most guys end up learning a little bit of everything, but each category of work is so expansive that there are always new things to learn. In my opinion it keeps the job exciting and for that reason it never really gets boring to me.

This is true.

I guess there are different kinds of people. I absolutely love being an electrician but it isn’t for everyone. In my case, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Universities are a great way to go too if you want a career in a field that requires a degree.
