Madhugiri Hill (Madhugiri Fort) is Asia’s second largest monolithic rock structure with height of 3950 ft. Its imposing beauty invites you for a trek up this Hill. However, very soon you realise ruthlessness of this trek with inclinations at some places as steep as 80 degrees. But here’s what makes the breath-taking adventure worth it.
First part of trek is quite welcoming with well laid out steps and multiple temples.
Halfway up the hill, one can catch a glimpse of the stunning views that surround Madhugiri. Rows upon rows of rural houses populate the villages at the base with tiny hills running around them and makes you feel on top of the world.
Madhugiri Fort was built in the year 1678 by Raja Heera Gowda who belonged to the Ganga Dynasty. Later, Hyder Ali added arches, watch towers and circular granaries around the fort.
Various rulers occupied the fort and ruled the region. It was also occupied by the British for a short period.
There are three entrances, named Antarala-bagilu, Diddi-bagilu and the Mysore gate respectively.
The interior of the fort is studded with brick built stepped wells that were once full of water from springs. These wells met all the water requirements of its occupants.
It would be ideal to start early and reach early to the base of the fort to avoid harsh sun unless it is raining.
It is advisable to carry your breakfast along with other eatables, energy bars, fruits and hydration for the trek.
There are no fees for the trek however you have to register yourself for safety reasons with the guards. So do not forget to carry your photo id card.
As you climb higher, the steep and rocky hill becomes very tricky and demanding. Though there are small steps, just enough to rest your toes and iron grill along the path for support. Still it is quite scary at a couple of places.
Overall the trek is quite adventurous and challenging but it’s an experience of a lifetime.
It takes about 3 to 4 hours to go up and down this hill and is definitely not for beginners.
