Found inside a shining stalk of bamboo, a tiny girl grows into an exquisite young lady, raised by an old bamboo cutter and his wife. From the countryside to the grand capital city, even unseen she enthralls all who encounter her, including five noble suitors. Ultimately she must face her fate, punishment for her crime.
Based on the classic Japanese folktale, "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter", "The Tale of The Princess Kayuga" is the strikingly beautiful culmination of decades of contemplation by director and Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata.

We Japanese knows the story of the tale of the princess kaguya since we are little. We even learn this orginal story from thousands years ago in middle school. But we never think about what Kaguya really felt. Thats why it's so emotionally powerful to Japanese audience.

I'm not exactly sure why, but this story left huge scars on my soul. To be honest, I was also happy that I had forgotten this story ... What a wonderful masterpiece of emotion it can evoke in a person. (SPOILER) Especially the place where Kaguya ran back to her old village and "everything was fine" for a brief moment. That part of the movie broke me in a strange way. "I would probably have been happy with you" Please just let me go now so I can forget this story again.

SPOILER: my interpretation on this movie is all about time.. kaguya was born and raised and grew.. then she spent her time in the capital when at the end she regrets and wished she would be happier if she was with sumeteru .. i see kaguya going back to the moon symbolizing as death.. when youre dying, theres nothing you can do about it no matter how much you wish to stay.. in the middle of life, you wish to go back to the moon because of the suffering here on earth but then if the moon (afterlife) decided to get you back, youll regret it and wished to have more time.. It awoke me to spend my time here on earth on something valuable, and make me happy.. like kaguya, where she is happier living a life of poverty in the mountains than of living the ideal life of the humans.. because of this movie, i will live MY chosen life, even if it isnt the ideal life of the humans, as long as it makes me happy. because like kaguya, we may not realize we spent our time on the things that doesnt make us happy and then we have to go to the moon, (afterlife), wether we like it or not.

This movie touched me in so many ways. Not only from the sad story, but of how relatable Kaguya is. I was also named after the goddess of the moon, and not too long ago had a dream that paralleled the events in this film. My life was really harsh growing up, and like Kaguya I loved all that life had to offer but hated it for how cruel it could be, and was always the outcast for being different. I was gifted but also cursed. I remember telling myself in my dream that I didn't want to be here anymore and just like that, my trapped soul broke free from my body and shot into the night sky. It was possibly the most memorable dream I ever had.

Both this tale and this movie can't avoid being touching. It's both the story of parenthood and childhood, life and death, it's so universal it'd be strange if nobody can relate in any way. This is the story of the cycle of life, Kaguya returning to the moon is, I don't think, so much signifying her death as it is signifying her parents' death, the moment where you know you're no longer an integral part of your child's life, they go off to do their own thing and you part ways, you did your best to raise her, now it's her job to go on and, you say goodbye, that moment where you realize you'll never pick your kid up again.

This masterpiece is not hidden as long as it is from Studio Ghibli, but at the end of the movie, I don’t know why it left me with emptiness, coldness, and a sense of loneliness. Studio Ghibli films always give us this feeling. I wish she would stay on earth with her father and mother 😢 But a Japanese legend remains only in the movie. The story was changed slightly by the real story. It became a love story between her and the Emperor. Before she went up to the moon, she wrote a letter to the Emperor and gave him immortality, but the Emperor did not want to live forever without her. He ordered both the letter and the drug containing the elixir of immortality to be taken to the top of a mountain and burned. Since then, the mountain has been known as Fuji, which means "immortal."

This movie is the best i've ever seen in my life. I'm a collector of the best of the best movies there is and have seen some that rocked my world. This one hitted me so much different and so much harder than any other movies ever have. This one have topped my 2 previous favorite moves " A Perfect World (1993)" and "The War (1994)" I cried during the whole session this movie lasted. It's as if there was a main story going on, but another one going on simultaneously. The second story is the purest and most impactful story of humanity i've ever witnessed. The two stories is perfectly met at the end and realized by Princess Kaguya and her parents. At that point it's too late. But nothing is ever wasted and the growth continues and life goes on. This movie will without a doubt stand the test of far time and stand as a pinnacle of 21th century cinema.

I cried like a baby. We must remember why we came to this Earth. We wanted to live and experience life, We came for the bugs, the très, the flowers. We were amaized by the magic of this place. But once We got here We focused on the things that werent going our way. One day comes, We have to live and regret all of it. Regret We didn't fully live

Director Takahata made a famous work called Heidi and Anne of Green Gables. When I think about the fact that this work is the final result of all those stories and girls' stories, I am naturally moved, and a kind of indescribable loneliness grips my heart.

Toshio Suzuki gave this film the catchphrase "Crime and Punishment". "The princess's sin" is that she yearns for the earth. "The punishment for the princess" is to be sent down to the earth. To the lunar world of heaven, where everything is pure, the human world of earth, filled with human emotions, desires, and various colors, is a sin. The princess is punished by being thrown into the lower world for the sin of longing for the lower world. The princess experiences various emotions on earth as punishment, and at the end of the movie, her sin is forgiven. Happy memories, thoughts of loved ones, love and hate are all feelings and attachments. There is love, and the pain of losing it because it is important. It is a very sad classic Japanese story. Isao Takahata ordered Joe Hisaishi to write the music for the last scene of the movie. "The music must be nimble, untroubled, and yet somehow strange." That music played in the shocking last scene. The music seems joyful, but emotionless. Very scary. And maybe the emperor's long chin is a symbol of his bloated pride and arrogance.

It seems that many people are reading this comment, so I'll add a little. Toshio Suzuki added a catchphrase to the movie "Princess's Sin and Punishment," but Isao Takahata opposed this catchphrase at the time. "Sin and punishment" is certainly part of this story, but emphasizing it risks distorting the intent of the story. "The earth with human emotions and desires is sin for the pure moon world, but irreplaceable for the humans living there. I felt the will to affirm this world, including sin and uncleanness." In response to a question from an interviewer at the time, Isao Takahata replied, "That's exactly it is." I think so, too. At the end of the story, the messenger's visit from the moon is synonymous with our death. When death comes, no one can resist it. No matter how much you love this world, it's hard to say goodbye to your loved ones, but the moment will come. It's scary, but it's a very sacred moment. This movie is an ale from Isao Takahata to us. "It may not be what you want, but this world is wonderful. Until that time comes, love and cherish your life."

Yes, the music at the end was so frightening. It was overpowering in a sense that despite the apparent sadness, you were forced to put on a smile whether you liked it or not. It was absolute. I think it encompasses the princess' princess life very well. Aside from a few, everyone else bombarded her with their own ideas of happiness thinking it'd be what would bring her happiness, not once considering her own idea of happiness, which would then go on to unsurprisingly bring forth anything but happiness. Selfish and ultimately, distressingly sad. I just finished the movie and wanted to know what other people thought about such a masterpiece. Looking at the reviews and other add ons, I'm pleased by what I see.

@@Isaac.D.grizzly nah, it's not about forcing the smile. you'd understand if you have background in buddhism. maybe, it's sad for the humans but it's different from the ones who fetch her. like the original commenter said, it's a sacred moment. like an ascending.

This movie touches us because we are all in some form this Kaguya, our soul temporarily comes down to this earth where we get to experience all kinds of things and emotions, happy and sad. Inside we know there's a place we come from, a home. Even with all the sorrow in the world, in the end there is always something you want to hold onto, but still the light calls us. That's why everyone hate the celestial "abduction" for it will come for us all. Kaguya is the meaning of life itself put together in tale! And therefore truly a masterpiece! Yet, somehow it feels more familiar to me than because I founs out I have Japanese blood and was always attracted to Heian/Nara period and samurai and poetry... what Kaguya felt like is just so relatable!

I'am 35 y.o. and as she I want to come in my village from my childhood, to play, to fill that when I was a little boy, when i was felt life much more than today. That time is passed away and will never happen again. This movie is a pure art. Style of visualization, music, story all parts are in my soul now. This film takes something important from your soul, but gives much more. Thank you Isao Takahata for that expirience. Defenetly, this work is one of my favorite of all time.
