Madoka Magica Rebellion, just like most other "connected" anime movies are rarely mentioned by anyone. So, knowing this, I decided to talk about the absolute genius of the 3rd Madoka Magica movie.

The ending makes a lot of sense when you remember what Madoka said during the "flower scene", where Homura tells Madoka that she "had a bad dream" (referring to Madoka becoming a god and no one remembering her except Homura). She said, and I quote, "That's right. You, Sayaka-chan, Mami-san, Kyoko-chan, my dad and mom and Tatsuya and even Hitomi-chan and everyone in our class. I would never want to go somewhere I could never see anyone again. Even if there were no other choice, I know I'd never have the courage to do something like that". In that moment, Homura realizes that she has to somehow save Madoka, thus the ending.

i think these are two different madokas tho. One didn't see the pain/aftermath of becoming a magical girl (the one that says the quote you stated), while the other did. Seeing all of that would probarly change a person, right? But homura did it to save her so, there's that, so i understand. But i wouldnt go against my friend's wish, unless they becmae unhappy. Madoka didn't seem unhappy at all (if im not mistaken) when destroying all th e witches

I don't understand why some people think that what Homura did was out of her character. At the end, she gives Madoka a normal (but fake) life. That's what she was trying to do from the all begining of the show ! Yes, it's somewhat a "bad" ending, but the original show already had a "bad" ending with Madoka sacrificing herself. Btw, it was a great video, you won a sub !

In magical girls anime. People seem to think the main character that they first saw or have pink outfit with clumsy and shy personality is the main spot of the show but Madoka Magically is different, Homura is actually the main spot of the show, the main character of other main characters. I understand what the ending is, it shows that when u want to do something so desperate that u do it for your own selfishness, but Homura also give something back, she gave everyone what they want, as long as no one stand in her way, she won't go ugly

I loved rebellion, the only reason "fans" dislike it is because it "makes no sense" which in other words means the didn't pay attention to the movie and/or the series. rebellion is art and it evolved the story into an ascension story. 100% of the time I asked what they didn't like they couldn't even tell me apart from it didn't make sense. which if you paid attention it makes sense. homura made the only decision that she could have.

it is a legit opinion though, i didnt like it as much as the first series and it didnt give me feels like it did, and the thematic and artistic aesthetic didn't impact me as much. i was almost bored, somehow, especially that much beloved fight scene. its only now i can put into words -why-, which is why im bothering to reply the original was very simple, it started out with a wholesome story, turned 180 degrees into beautiful contained madness, and then back 180 into a straightforward bittersweet ending that, without the 180 turn, would have felt flat. its a simple two turn story that ends, and you dont have to be 2deep4u about it, either, its just feels n shiet this movies almost complete deviation from those clean aesthetics is just confusing because it doesn't match at all, you expect and adore something else. you can acknowledge that there is sense and meaning in the movie, but you cant expect that all "fans" will necessarily like it just because its there. its like pancakes and waffles, would you condemn pancake fans for not liking waffles?

I agree! People don't talk enough about how stunning the visuals and music in Rebellion are! My personal favorite piece of symbolism are the spider lilies, representing abandonment and loss. When Homura completes her transformation into a witch, there are red lines streaming down her eyes. I interpret this as spider lilies growing over her face, covering her face so she can no longer see Madoka or her sacrifice.

It was completely in character for Homura to do what she did. Homura isn't selfish, she basically lives for madoka. As you said, Homura was unhappy about the way things ended in the anime, but she accepted it, despite her own pain, because she thought it was what madoka wanted. In the movie though, Madoka talks to Homura about not wanting to leave them and how it'd break her heart and that she'd never have the courage to do that unless she had no other choice. Madoka didn't really want her fate, she accepted it because she had to. For Homura, who lives for madoka, the next step of action becomes obvious, give madoka the life she truly desires. Homura will always do whatever she believes will make Madoka happiest and she doesn't care about anything else, that's been apparent since the first time she appeared, which is why it always baffles me that people think her actions are out of character. Did they miss that little talk the two had? Did they think it was just there to fill time? No, it was their to justify why a character like Homura would do what she did, and it does so perfectly.
@paprikamuffin
@paprikamuffin 4 жыл бұрын
I feel like the point of Homura's character IS that she's incredibly selfish. She did everything for Madoka because she THOUGHT it was what Madoka wanted, but never really stopped to consult Madoka on what she wanted. I always throwback to canon when Homura outright tried to murder a severely depressed Sayaka because she was making Madoka sad. I don't think Madoka would have wanted that. Homura's selfishness is manifested through her wanting Madoka to have a happy, normal life, without truly understanding why the Madoka in the original anime made her wish. After all, in the end Homura separated God Madoka from the Madoka in her memories, despite Madoka pleading with her not to tear her apart. I feel like saying Homura isn't a selfish person takes away an interesting and complex part of her character.

@hannahwalker9652

I don't think what Homura did was OOC at all. First, it was all based off a misunderstanding. Homura is a completely different person from Madoka. She has a different thought process, and I can believe that Homura could have been completely baffled by Madoka's selfless wish. She wanted to save Madoka above all, the person she loved -- whereas Madoka sacrificed herself largely for complete strangers. The wishes seem similar, but they're really not. Homura didn't understand that Madoka was content with her wish, and when Madoka confessed that being away from her friends would break her heart, that only solidified Homura's belief that Madoka was unhappy. What Homura wanted to do was make Madoka happy, not betray her. Yes, altering someone's memories without their permission is wrong, but the world isn't blank and white. Homura made a world where Madoka is happy with her friends and family, where she doesn't have to bear all the pain of the Magical Girls. In a way, she took on Madoka's burden for her. Remember, she said that all she took from the Law of Cycles was Madoka herself. It could even feasible that the Cycle is functioning, only without Madoka. My parting thought is: In the very end, Madoka is with her family, while Homura is all alone. ...And wow, this is a long-ass comment. Although, with all the other long-ass comments of KZfaq, perhaps it's not too long-ass after all.
@joeri2027

There's also the subtle reference. The witch labyrinth the movie took place in is incredibly similar to how the movie ends with essentially the universe becoming Homura's demon labyrinth. And Sayaka says this in regards to the witch labyrinth: "Tell me, is this really so bad? We don't have to fight anyone. We can all live, working together. Is the heart that wished for that so sinful it needs to be destroyed?" I don't see a reason for Homura's new "reality" being so different from that. Despite calling herself a demon and evil and all the morally questionable things she did, she isn't truely evil. She's more like chaotic good: she'll do whatever it takes to "save" Madoka, even splitting her from her god status and imprisoning her. In the end, she just wants to save madoka and have her live a happy life with her friends and family. The animes ending didn't allow that in the slightest

Its been 2 years but i just had to let you know i think youre completely right. Ppl call homura selfish because of what she did and in a way theyre right, but theyre also very wrong. In a way she made a great sacrifice. She created a world where everyone can be happy except her. She even brought nagisa back to life. Alsooo i just rlly love the foreshadowing. Like the flower scene in rebelllion and even when madoka was talking with her mom about sayaka, her mom told her "make a mistake for her" and when madoka asked if she would know she did it for her sake she said that sometimes they knew and sometimes they didn't. That's exactly what happened.

I had to look at Rebellion a few more times to really appreciate the ending since I binged watched Madoka Magica and Rebellion in two days. Like you said, both endings had questions that were left unanswered yet the anime gets more praise than the movie. I think people fail to realize that the connection to the movie and anime was going to happen at some point especially after what Kyubey told Homura about how the Incubators were trying to figure out why soul gems vanish rather/the law of cycles. Also, Homura's actions were a necessary evil if you think about it of a situation that was going to be unavoidable if she had simply been saved by Madoka; it probably would have been a bigger betrayal if she had gone with Madoka.

People deeply underestimated Homuras feelings, that scene near the end, where sayaka mentions all the colors and corresponding feelings, as Homura says they are the tip of the iceberg of her emotional state. In addition they underestimate the power in the wording of her wish, the strength to protect Madoka, consider that at no point in the series did she possess such strength, Walpurgisnacht consistently put the smackdown on her. Both her emotionally driven almost fanatical mentality to protect Madoka (from both Madoka herself and the little devil) and whatever fate she ties her soul to with her wish compel her to do what she did, it's the most in character possibility from everything bubbling up under the surface that people don't seem to see. Homura spends years paying for a wish that doesn't see results until both a series and a movie.

I don't think homura did it for herself. After her wish, her every action was for madoka. Everything she did was for madoka. This is no different. You just got to look at the flower scene in the movie-you just got to listen to what homura asks, and what madoka replies. Madoka, point blank, says that she would never be happy with an ending where she leaves everyone behind. Homura isn't selfish. She's desperate. Everything she's ever done was for her, for her smile, for her to be happy. What else could she have done? Let her stay shattered across the universe forever, distant to be the martyr for magical girls everywhere, without them even knowing? And maybe a part of it was selfish. Everything she did was for her, after all. To be thrust into a world where it's like she never existed-to be the only one to remember her, after 8-12 years of dedicating your life to her, watching her die, trying anything, anything to save her... maybe she just needed her there again. Maybe she couldn't do it without her there. She says it herself, in the end-even if she's to become her enemy, she will fight to see her smile, she will love her, still. Everything she does is for madoka. And that's the real tragedy here.

I honestly never questioned homura's motive for stealing power, if you think about it just a few moments earlier she was essentially a witch, a being of despair. Not to mention she coated the world in a labyrinth, so it just seemed fitting to be a devil of despair rather than a goddess of hope. One thing that does get me though is why the law of cycles didn't get homura way before witch powers would even manifest like the other girls? Unless she was beginning to become one before madoka rewrote the universe since her gem was going dark before madoka made a wish?

I will throw my two cents into this. Homura figured it out in regards to her act towards the ending. Where there is Light there has to be Darkness. I'll eventually have to make a video explaining my approach, but in essence I don't think a 6-minute section of a 6 hour anime should have any serious impact on the quality. To be honest I think Arkada believes this too actually, even though he stresses in his videos how the ending is always paramount, I think that's just a hyperbole .

Oh I agree, he likely isn't as harsh as he states. Heck, he even did enjoy Rebellion a bit. For me though, it's really difficult to put weight behind something when a lot of shows just have an alright ending. Tons of shows end in the same manner, but that won't stop me from enjoying the show. Much by the same logic, if an anime has a fairly bad ending, it won't effect my opinion unless the ending is done so incredibly bad that it's not only a huge downer, but spits in the face of the viewer. That is why I have a hatred for Charlotte, as it's ending was insulting to me. So yes, an ending could potentially ruin a series, but it would take something disastrous to do so.

I agree. Although I also think it depends on how the rest of the anime was. If it was a decent anime with a bad ending, I feel that that is a deciding factor in whether you consider it bad or "just ok". Same the other way around with a decent anime with a good ending. This could work in the opposite way as with bad ending ruining a good anime too. I feel a bad anime with a really good ending can turn the anime decent or even good. It is, of course, an undeniable fact that the ending of any story has a great deal of importance. So it's natural that that importance translates over to reviews of TV, Film, Anime and more. Actually, come to think of it (a little of topic but): I think it takes a lot more to ruin a good story with a bad ending, than it takes to turn a bad story good through a good ending.

The ending is brilliant. It completes Homura's arc. If you can think and analyze what's going on you will sure understand Rebellion is actually a true masterpiece. Madoka is associated with the Moon. Homura is associated with sun in this movie. Madoka created a world with Ultimate Hope and Peaceful Death. Homura created a world where everyone has got a moment of ultimate happiness but a fragile one. Madokami still exists - she is just without her human part. When Madoka came for Homura, Homura chose life. Life with a moment of relief and happiness. If she would go with Madoka - it means she would just choose death. She came in terms with herself that she doesn't accept Madokami's world. She thinks it's very sad anda literal nightmare since there is no Madoka she can see and touch.

Absolutely perfect review. Puella Magi as a whole, Rebellion included, is a masterpiece and it means so much to anime, film and art. Frame by frame, Rebellion is like a painting in a way that each moment can be captured, analyzed and admired. I've taken many screenshots from this film simply to emphasize its artistic prowess. The work is so exponentially grandiose, it drives me insane that so many people overlook just how stunning and masterful it truly is. You have nailed what this film means /perfectly/ in this review and I applaud you for that. Because even fans of the series seem to overlook just how breathtakingly elegant Rebellion is. It's tragic and beautiful and filled with the most symbolic of shots and groundbreaking music. The script, the emotion, the acting is all so, so good and I think you're one of the few people who really understand all that Rebellion presents to the viewer. Congratulations, congratulations, congratulations.

Homura Akemi " I wish I could meet n miss Kaname all over again but this time instead of her protecting me, I want to protect her" I honestly wonder how Homura's gets view as "out of character", Even ignoring the fact that she did the exact same thing in the anime just with time, instead of space. She even consistently beings up how she should of stop Madoka. almost as if it was building it up or something.

This movie's ending is one of the only things that I've had my opinion changed on by someone else. When I watched it, I hated the ending because I thought it was totally out of character and felt like it was setting out to ruin my favourite character, but after I read some really well thought out opinions on TV Tropes, it brought me around to enjoying it.Also, another great video! I didn't like the ending at first either, but the more you think about it, the more you start to realise it really does actually make sense for Homura to have done what she did. She's spent years and years trying to save Madoka, and then she sacrafices herself and is forgotten by her friends and family and can never be with them again? How would a person like Homura ever accept that, knowing Madokas fate as the law of cycle didn't make her happy and removed any possibility of her living a normal life?

Rebellion has become one of my favorite movies of all time, not only did it somehow manage to connect a movie and anime so fluently, but the visual is so gorgeous and the multilayered plot that made the anime great. While I had a hard time accepting the ending for awhile, I’ve come to realize that it makes sense in hindsight. The only problem I really have with the ending is that it basically just leaves a sequel hook and basically retcons all of the anime series Madoka Magica Rebellion is such a diamond in the rough and I really feel like more people should know of it

Not sure if anyone is actually watching the comment section for a video this old anymore but I'll go ahead and leave my two cents anyways. There are *spoilers* for the ending of the movie below. I totally agree with your assessment of both the movie as a whole, and the ending as well. Rebellion is a gorgeous film all the way through, and it's a shame that the people that don't like the series tend to focus so hard on the ending. Rebellion is even more dense with symbolism and allegory than the original series, which is pretty impressive considering how high of a bar the series had already set. As far as the music is concerned, for the most part I prefer the soundtrack of the original series, but Rebellion had some pretty memorable tracks as well. Yuki Kajiura overall makes some pretty amazing music, but at least for me the Madoka Magica franchise has been a shining example of her talent even among the rest. I think that the way people judge the ending of the movie can be pretty unfair sometimes. People will say the ending wasn't built up enough, but I think the only flaw in this regard is that the hints that were there were too subtle. They'll say that Homura's new form wasn't explained at all and that it came out of left field, but if you pay enough attention to the context clues leading into that scene you can figure out what happened for yourself. The thing is, like the series before it, Rebellion is meant to be watched multiple times if you want to get full enjoyment out of it, because many things in the movie only make sense with additional context from later scenes, or require actual mental effort to work through. They will say that Homura's "character development" was thrown out the window, ignoring the fact that Homura fought the ending of the series right up to the moment where she was tossed into Madoka's new world, and that she "accepted" Madoka's sacrifice only because she was forced to. Never mind the fact that the entire theme of Homura's character has been that she forever goes in circles, never moving forward. You could argue that Madoka's new world was meant to break these nasty cycles, but we were shown through Sayaka's death in the new world that such isn't the case, and wouldn't apply to Homura anyways because she is a leftover from the old order of things. If anything, I would say it would have been more out of character for Homura to just lay down and do nothing when an opportunity to "save" Madoka presents itself. Homura was broken before she ever met Madoka, and her adoration of Madoka as a person gave her a purpose in life once she realized that Madoka was doomed. Homura was reforged into a new person through her goal to save Madoka, and the harsh reality she had to suffer through in the pursuit of that goal, so to expect her to just lay that aside is pure folly. This is even referenced in Homura's monologue in the ending of the series, where she states that the world isn't worth saving, but because Madoka wanted to protect it she would continue fighting. It's true that Homura's actions at the end of Rebellion were not morally correct, because you cannot use someone's intentions to justify their actions, as there lies a very slippery slope. That said, Homura remains my favorite anime character, and if I were into the whole waifu thing it would probably be her, because someone needs to look out for that girl. Also, Madoka Magica remains my favorite fictional franchise with the Fate/Stay Night franchise coming in second, and nothing really coming close to usurping those two.

I'll admit when I first saw this movie I was PISSED at the ending but I never thought it was out of character for Homura to do what she did. She was obsessed with Madoka and especially after everything she went through to save her, Madoka just sacrifices herself, for the good of others mind you, but to Homura it's like what the hell? After watching it a couple of times now, I think this movie is a masterpiece.

It has been really long since this video but I just wanted to speak my mind. I absolutely adore rebellion and I think it's an amazing movie. People don't like it because it has a sad ending, but I've always loved tragedies, and that's who Homura is. I also don't think what she did was off character at all. It had been foreshadow during the flower scene, and even in the anime when Madoka is talking with her mom about 'her friend that keeps trying to do what's right', meaning Sayaka, her mom told her to "make a mistake for her". When Madoka asked her if she would know that she did it for her sake, her mom told her that often they didn't. That's what Homura did. She did something that in the eyes of the others was terrible, a huge mistake, for Madoka's sake. This, however, could be seen as selfish. People could see it as she bringing down this incredible hope just because she wants to be with Madoka, but I think that what Homura did wasn't selfish at all. In a way, she made a huge sacrifice. She turned into something dark and obscure because of Madoka, pulling her from the Law of Cycles. It's stated, however, that the law still is in place. Madoka is just not it anymore. So Homura made a world in which everyone, even Nagisa, could be happy. She made a world in which everyone could be happy except for her. And for that, she will have to fight Madoka sometime. She's now her enemy, the enemy of the one she loves so much. It just breaks my heart, and I'm sure it breaks Homura's too.

I loved this video, thank you so much for making it! I was one of the people lucky enough to see the movie in theaters when it first came out. I cosplayed Mami when I went, and met a lot of really nice people who were as in love with the series as I was (and still am). No one really knew what to expect for the movie, but everyone was very excited to see it. The beginning scene was gorgeous and enthralling. It pulled me in and made me feel as if I were a part of it. The opening song that played was sweet, but with an undertone of gloominess and eventually heartbreak, when Homura reaches for Madoka and she turns to sand. The animation and the aesthetics were so absolutely beautiful and breathtaking that I felt like I was living in some sort of dream. During many of these stunning scenes, gasps of surprise or amazement would escape from the audience, and when the ending was revealed and the lights came on once more, there was a moment of complete silence before screams were heard around the room. People were experiencing so many different emotions, including myself, who was just silent and had tears running down my face. I have never seen a movie that had this sort of reaction on the audience before. It was so absolutely moving, beautiful, heartbreaking, sweet, and tragic that it touched the hearts of everyone in the room. It is so underrated and overlooked, but it truly is a work of art, and I am glad that I found your video and heard your thoughts on it as well :)

Also in complete agreement. Every time I re-watch it I notice other hints and symbolism and it pushes me to learn more like what the Spider Lily means. I'm an illustrator and this movie is so gorgeous and full of meaning it inspires me to do better work. I loved the ending too. I think a lot of people didn't understand Homura but I loved her more after this. She had a love so deep even the pain from it is a precious thing, her testament of love (the time she spent trying to save Madoka) became part of her. She would rather die with that pain, knowing what it may lead to, than let Madoka free her from it. She meant it when she begged to die. Homura was never in this for anyone else but protecting Madoka she loved. She twisted the world just so they can exist together again and protect her. She knows it's selfish but it's also an act of deep, deep love. Art isn't always made to make viewers happy, it's supposed to tell a story. Madoka Magicka is about understanding morality and human nature, subjects that tread dark territory. In the 3rd movie I wouldn't underestimate any of these characters and the Incubators finally know suffering can't of made them better.

This is my favorite movie, thank you for acknowledging how beautiful it is. I actually loved the ending. Homura wasn't even all that selfish - in the beginning she was fully supportive of Madoka's decision and wanted to protect it. She changes her mind when Madoka tells her in the flower field that she could never do something like what Homura described because it would break her heart. That's when Homura becomes convinced that she failed in protecting Madoka and that she shouldn't have accepted the anime ending. If all Homura wanted was to be with Madoka, she would have just let herself be taken by the Law of Cycles. She did what she did for Madoka - because Madoka said she didn't want to be apart from her friends and family. Also cause she's a crazy bitch. God I love her.

indeed, i don't see many channels talk about anime movies as often as they could. there's plenty of goods ones. the ending of the movie initially left me with mixed feelings. i just wasn't sure how to feel about it. after thinking about it for a while. i love the ending and i don't consider it breaking homuras character. as for how many times she repeated timelines. i forgot what the source was. but apparently she went through it 100 times. even if it wasn't that much it would have to be at least 20+ because of that 1 scene with madoka tied up with strings each indicate a timeline homura erased. it's sad that some think this is a poorly written series. still fans seriously should read all of the mangas related to the madoka universe and if possible the PSP VN as the characters become even much better and deeper then with just the anime. so they are missing out.

Well, I'm glad to know I'm not alone in thinking these things. I made this video in the hopes that people can realize how actually amazing this movie is. =D

+DuoReview Just asking if you've read the visual novel "Saya no Uta". It's written by the same person as madoka magica. It's my favourite story, as it explores the depths of insanity and presents very dark and morally questioning themes. Could you please do a video on it if you have, or will read it in the future?

I'll look into that, since it sounds interesting. A video may or may not happen though, as I do need to focus a bit on videos that get views for a bit. I've avoided mainstream aime for too long, so now I need to do a bit more. XD

I think this movie is absolutely fantastic. I would say it is one of my favorite movies of all time. Every time I watch it it leaves an Impact that no other movie has ever done.

Rebellion is probably my favourite movie (animated or not) ever. Every damn moment give me chills. You can pause at any moment and the scenery will have meaningfull symbolism. This is both a masterpiece of art and of storytelling.

I've seen so many videos justifying the ending and reinforcing themes of not just the show but of individual characters, particularly Homura. People who say that it's a bad or confusing ending didn't dig deep past the plot twists and shock of the series. This is an anime you can't just sit back and watch and understand everything; it challenges you to think. Too bad most people don't think

Honestly Rebellion is one of my favourites. The ending was bitter sweet and admittedly I was hoping Madoka would save Her again. The thing is the end made sense to me and I understand why it had to end the way it did for both the movies and the show.

Well the ending made sense, especially if you take the post-credits scene from the TV series. That scene for shadowed Homura's transformation. Furthermore Homura is and was a Yandere for Madoka not particularly her but the idea. Madoka as a reflection of herself in the first timeline. The ending of the TV series was very anti-climactic in regards to Homura, she did not care for her own survival but the the safety of Madoka. Also the realization that all she did was pointless and Madoka vanished in the end did not help her psyche. Really it is a fitting end to Homura's arc and to the series.

My friends and I watched this when it first came out, and it feels like a labyrinth in all of our minds. It was such "artistic insanity" indeed, that I was so overwhelmed I can't make a practical picture of it in my mind. Does that make sense? It was so godly crazy that it made the mind go brrrrrr About to rewatch it now!

I feel like the whole "it's not about the ending, it's about the journey" quote, I can agree (Assassination Classroom is one of my favorites so ;) then again that ending was predictable but pretty emotional still) :3 and yay more theories :D

Glad to see someone talking about the amazing soundtracks and how little the opening and ending themes are talked about! Honestly, I find it a bit annoying that those theme tracks (and the lyrics at times) are so easily ignored when oftentimes the lyrics offer really amazing insight to the storyline. Yuki Kajiura, the absolute genius composer made all the tracks, and she's the one that wrote and composed several songs that appear in the anime (as well as the movie), and I love the way her lyrics give a deeper insight to the mystery that is our girl Homura. The guard who wants to protect your childish slumber Keeps the gate to adulthood tightly closed - Kimi no Gin no Niwa (by Kalafina, composed by, again, Yuki Kajiura) These two lines hit the hardest to me when I went back to listen to this song after watching the movie.

the trippy animation is done by Gekidan Inu Curry, their work is truly breathtaking and the madoka series as a whole wouldn’t be the same without them !
