Trigger warning for white straight men. Yes I comment on how disgusting one of the interviewers is and generalise white straight men as a whole. If you're offended by this, I really don't care. I'm sure you will still have your privilege when you leave your house.

As a gay 16 year old kid living in the sticks during the early 90’s Madonna was my only connection to gay culture and the community. Through her music, videos and interviews she taught me to love myself and not be ashamed of who I was. She will always be one of my heroes.

The fact that Madonna was saying these things on national television and on radio broadcasts during such a conservative and repressive time in the world is incredible. She’s often been so ahead of her time. I feel like society is finally catching up to the ideas she was presenting to the mainstream, particularly with women’s rights and gay rights. She most definitely helped move the needle forward. People love her for it and people hate her for it. Unfortunately, I feel like people won’t be able to acknowledge her brilliance until after she’s dead.

These are great examples of what M was up against ALL THE TIME, especially during this era. She was treated like an oddity and everyone was pushing her to feel shame or regret or to apologize for her work. She made so many people uncomfortable with the truth. BUT, she survived and ultimately thrived.

Great reaction. The 60 minutes interviewer was Richard Carlton and he was a big deal back in the day. I so remember being similarly appalled at the blatant misogyny in his questions but unfortunately that was pretty standard in the 90s. I’ve recently thought it’d be brilliant if someone would put together a montage/compilation of snippets of all the misogynistic questions and comments she was subjected to over her career. I just think it’d really help explain to younger generations why she is so revered/celebrated by some and why she might now come across as a little abrasive. I mean 40 years of being the worlds favourite woman to pile shit on would make you a little defensive.

Brings back sooo many memories! I was a kid in the 80's and remember her music, but it was in the 90s that I became a proper fan. Being a gay tween in the deep south of the U.S. (Mississippi) was a riot, let me tell you. Experiencing Madonna from Express Yourself, Vogue, Truth or Dare, Blonde Ambition, Justify My Love, the S.E.X. book, the Erotica album, Girlie Show Tour, and the videos from it was all revelatory to me. She brought queer culture to mainstream audiences. I saw myself and "my people" being represented in her work. She didn't shy away from it. And yes, she did advocate safe copulation and was outspoken about AIDS too. Feminists at the time did criticize her for being sexually provocative. Her position or message was that women have fantasies and can enjoy se*ual freedom just as much as men. She's the one in charge or in control. Not the other way round. However, at the time, it was shocking! It's amazing that she was able to continue having a good career after all of that because she did catch a lot of heat! Different times though. I would wager that if the tech of today existed then, it probably would have been a career killer. People were limited to print media; cable news was relatively new or in its infancy, and music/video consumption was the radio, record/cd shops, and if you had cable t.v. or the early humongous satellite dishes, you could get MTV while it was still all about music. Considering where I grew up and when, I am surprised I was able to keep up with and have access to everything. Thanks for the videos! Every generation has their gay icon whether it's Judy, Cher, Streisand, Bette Midler, Lady Gaga (I like all of them) - Madonna is mine!

Oh God, could you imagine if social media existed back then?! Although maybe it wouldn't have been so impactful? You lose a lot o your narrative with SM I think. But LOVE LOVE LOVED reading this and your journey!!!
@musiqueguy1
@musiqueguy1 Жыл бұрын
@@bennshouts Right?! When the Erotica era occurred, it was just before commercial internet became a thing. If SM and the tech of today was in use at the time, I think it would have been worse on her - the fallout from it. The court of public opinion would have been much different. But who knows? She has always been sxly provocative without even trying to be sometimes. So maybe she is about the only person who could have gotten away with it. Looking at the book that went with that era today, it's still rather unbelievable. Nothing like it before or since.

This is why she's a world-rocking force. She's sharp, no-nonsense, and in a category of her own. With no formal media training, she's undoubtedly learned to navigate interviews, especially with mostly male counterparts aiming to corner her. She's a Woman, She's Old, She's Crazy, She has botox, She can't sing, She doesn't play the instruments....The haters will always find anything to dismiss her instead of focus on the genius she is and that's because they don't feel comfortable with anyone who still stands exactly because she was the first woman to be different from others in the music industry by free expressing her points of views and personality without caring for approval of others, the first to stay "old" and still want to work and create art, that's why she is always paying a price, because she is PIONEER, INOVATIVE, UNIQUE, FIGHT LABELS, PUSH BUTTONS. For a man to be like that was always normal on the music industry but she is a woman, she should be quiet on her place and not to be interventive and express her opinions and above all never, never try to be on a place that was always and only reserved for men and objectifying men like they did objectifying woman on their music videos since then, how dare you Madonna? Men always liked to be on command and that's why they are afraid of her...That's the reason why she is a LIVING LEGEND, A MYTH, AN ICON, THE ONLY LIVING SUPERSTAR WHICH STILL REMAINS, and was named the QUEEN (of pop). Come on guys give her a break and let her continue her artistic and genius career while she is still alive, one day when she won't be with us people will notice her importance in History, but I guess it is always like that, you must lost someone important to know his real VALUE. That's why I'm always thinking how fortunate we are to have the privilege every single day to have her still among with us while she is ALIVE AND KICKING. For me Madonna is the definition of WOMAN and will always be until I die. Sometimes I think as a Madonna huge fan she really don't have the best voice in the world comparing with other singers nor is the best dancer nor is the best this or the best that and for me this is even more the reason why she is my favourite artist of all time, because with all this "limitations" she remains above other great artists on a timeline because she has PERSONALITY, CHARISMA, STYLE, INTELEGENCY and applies that on her artistic path and surpasses herself constantly, from others we can only say: "ok great voice this artist have, this singer is so pretty and sexy,..." we only appreciate them by their technical and physical skills, but with Madonna is different we appreciate her by some of this same skills but as WHOLE, as a PERSONALITY. Everytime she bring us a new record or concert she impregnate her unique strong sincere personality on it remaining coherent with her beliefs and convictions and that's why I think people still follow and respect her. She's BEATIFUL on her own way and I am not only speaking physically which she was of course more when she was younger but she is even more beautiful as time goes by because beauty is not only what you see outside but what you perception the others give you from inside and on this Madonna is the most beatiful person in the world and History because she is such a beatiful soul and human being inside. For any reason singers like Whitney, Mariah, Janet, Britney, Beyonce, Rihanna that stood for her great voices or style/beauty comparing to Madonna never accomplished what Madonna is and done (and I'm not saying I don't like those artists) because she has that "It" factor, a "je ne sais quoi", a MAGIC MYSTERY that no one can explain but that's why she is a MYTHICAL (LIVING) LEGEND in HISTORY. Many things have been said about this woman in the past and will always continue in the present and future because we want to explain and guess who is this person and woman/human being which is always defying us. She is LOVED and HATED, but the geniuses and myths were always like that, loved for some and hated by others, the true ARTISTS AND GENIUSES were always like that originating debate because they were DIFFERENT. Today to dismiss Madonna is kind of trendy but Madonna is ETERNAL like all LEGENDS are so as time goes by and as fashions move on she will stay UNTOUCHABLE and IMMORTAL as one of the most SINGULAR human beings that come to this planet and universe. Madonna is a mix of unique physical and personal beauty that combined together made the person who she is until today: A GODDESS among GODS. THANK YOU Madonna for CHANGING MY LIFE.

40 years into her career and she is arguably the biggest pop star on the planet. Every and i mean this: EVERY time she released something new, the media, reporters, haters, all said she was a flash in the pan, a no talent hack, can't sing and she would never last. its like they were super pissed that she defied them so they keep doing it, and its sill the same today. Every news article comments on her age etc., questioning why she is still singing etc., NOW they say how she's washed up, she should just go away and retire, no one wants to see her anymore etc., blah blah blah, yet here she is again all over the news with a new tour and she's as strong as ever. No one would last this long without sheer talent and she is arguably the biggest of them all. She said it best at the Billboard woman of the year event in her honor that the most controversial thing that she has ever done was to stick around.

Surprising that she says she finds ABBA boring. We all know what comes in the future. Maybe she just had a narrow view or understanding of the group and then learned to appreciate them as artists. You’re doing a great job exploring both Madonna’s trail blazing career, and the painful history of what many of us experienced as an outright war against queer people. Those against us then, as today, were the ignorant bigots you’d expect. But in those days you could also expect to be insulted, reduced, erased by almost everyone you’d encounter on a screen, in print or in life. Nowhere was safe from the judgement that most… yes most… non LGBTQ people leveled against us, whether that judgement came as overt homophobic verbal or physical violence, or as cold dismissal and ignorant, diminishing assumption. It was everywhere. I respect anyone who stands up against oppression at any time but, during the relentless shitstorm of the 80s and 90s, with so little positive media to balance it out, and so much pain, suffering and loss all around us… in a time like that standing up and staying up, as Madonna has always done, is an act of genuine heroism. Your lucidity and humbleness, and your respectfully offered insights, are much appreciated.

I think that is how it was, but a small group got it and that group took these ideas into the world and that’s how now a days the things Madonna was fighting for have improved or at least topics for discussion. It’s so great when a younger generation, like yourself discovers this and gives her credits for it, also for the older generation to realise what was hidden under all the scandal. I think no one else uses commercial culture to push social injustice isues better.

Believe it or not, but '60 Minutes' (the original magazine show) is has excellent in-depth stories. The show in Australia is trash, from what I hear.

I just don’t understand WHY when you bring the thing about straight men you have to bring white… because straight black men don’t have the same misogynistic biased views??? Why always using the bandwagons terms it’s so incredibly lame and unnecessary and brings more division instead of reunion.
@bennshouts
@bennshouts 29 күн бұрын
Black men can have those views sure, but majority of abuse of POWER comes from white straight men. Hence why that’s the focus. Hardly lame. And things that are commonly used are generally because MAJORITY of people agree with it. Getting so triggered over it shows you are part of the problem lol. If white people really wanted reunion then they’d acknowledged their power and how it’s benefitted them hugely.

@@bennshouts ha ha I’m gay and non white. The majority of abuse of power comes from white men ? Look at the absolute and systematic abuse of power by the Middle East and African regimes. Go see how WOMEN and GAYS thrives in these country. My background is Algerian Tunisian I know what I’m talking about. Try to go being a Madonna loving queer there you’ll see. Your view is racist because you bring up color all you see is color. And you can’t help but looking down on black people you take away their agency and always see them as victims. See that’s the thing with brainwashed people like you they think they are the MAJORITY 😂😂 you are not. You are an offended minority the majority rejects you because your talk is dividing and they are sick of this.

@@bennshouts Wait until you get to the British Lady of the Manor married to Guy Ritchie living in England Madonna who writes children's books. 😆 I laugh when people say Madonna should tone it down and "dress her age" now. I'm like how quickly you forget that when she went through that phase you were all screaming for the fun party girl back! She can't win. One things for sure she will continue to live life on her own terms. I hope her new tour hits your area at some point!

Ι love it that she has the same opinion about Abba music as me: Boring, flat most of the time and overrated. Interesting how she had another hit 14 years later with a song using an Abba sample, I blame the producer Stuart Price because she said he played her tons of Uk based music like Abba, Pet Shop Boys (much better) etc.
