Specially to the letterman interview, I literary was thinking my face hurts from smiling so much just before you said the same! They have such incredible chemistry and banter together. Fun fact is this episode had the highest ever ratings for them when it aired thanks to M. Also she broke the record for the number of times anyone said the F word on TV which was 14 times! Pretty iconic if you ask me haha. Just madonna being the rebel she is and doing what she does best.

Her behaviour was widely criticised and condemned by the moral majority who thought she was the devil and she was corrupting and influencing their innocent children with her filthy language and her sexual innuendos and her confrontational attitude. She said "fuck" more than 15 times on live television and ppl wanted her cancelled cause they thought she lost her mind and went too far. Haha it was epic and ground breaking and she broke all the rules like the Queen she is. You don't try and fuck with Madonna cause you will regret it. Bitch I'm Madonna. This interview was boundary shifting and so controversial. You go girl!! J

The film Orlando that she refers to is fabulous. Based on a Virginia Woolf novel about a man who suddenly wakes up one morning and has become a woman. All about how she still feels like the same person inside but is immediately treated differently by society and the laws of the land. Played by the remarkable Tilda Swinton. I think you'd enjoy it. The infamous striped mansion was a house once owned by a famous mobster named Bugsy Siegal. Such unbelievable outrage arose when Madonna had the house painted in the bold stripe motif, which was apparently inspired by Italian architecture. I don't think she kept it for long, selling the property after a stalker broke in. After she testified against him in court, the stalker was found guilty and was jailed.

A bit of important context for the Letterman interview; before she walked on, Dave literally introduced her by saying: "Our next guest has slept with some of the biggest names in the industry..." Disgusting. So, naturally, she came out feeling defensive, guns a-blazing. Also, she confirmed in her Howard Stern interview in 2016 that she had smoked a joint with Tupac right before coming on (she was dating him at the time).

Another comment. It's so funny watching her on Letterman here, and then watching her return appearance in 2000 (yes it took that long before she went back). It's like watching two completely different people. In 2000 she's a mother of two, and dating her soon to be husband of 8 years. Completely different vibe and I love it.

Decades later both Madonna and Letterman’s team confirmed that she smoked a joint and was high on endo while doing this interview… but that interview is the most iconic moment on the TV ever!

Luv luv this reaction. Sooo David Letterman did seriously make jokes about Madonna and her sex life on like every show he did for a good couple of years leading up to that interview. She could have refused the invitation to appear on the show but instead she decided to go on and cause total havoc and chaos for Letterman and his team. I mean you gotta luv a woman that faces her distractors face on and in doing so it felt like they actually became kind of fond of one another. That interview was front page of every paper the following day. Luved your reaction it bought back many fond memories.

Brief background on the Letterman interview: She was annoyed that he was always joking about her sex/personal life (this was common in the media at the time after the Sex book) so the booker invited her to come on and confront him about it and they thought it would be funny. She said she was going to say some bad words and they loved it and said they would bleep her and it would be hilarious. Dave was supposedly in on the whole thing, but when the audience started to turn on her, he got kind of nasty. I don't think the producers thought it would go that far. They had lots of clips of Dave talking about Madonna's sex life ready to go but then acted like they didn't know about it. Madonna was dating Dennis Rodman at the time and supposedly they smoked weed before she went on. She refused to leave and they had to push one of the guests to the following night. After the fact, the media went crazy and Dave could have come out and said it was all planned but instead he pretended like he wasn't aware. This obviously pissed Madonna off even more and she was blamed by the media for being crude and out of control. While all of this was happening, "I'll Remember" was climbing the charts and became a huge hit in the U.S. (four weeks at #2!) and one of my favorite Madonna songs. Several months later, Dave escorted Madonna out on stage to present at the VMAs and they "kissed and made up." Ironically, Aerosmith won the award and Steven Tyler made a crude joke about Madonna while accepting it.

She was on many times after that interview. They are all so good.

Love how much you loved Madonna vs Letterman. It really is some of the most rebellious and hilariously awkward sparring in the history of television. And we who get shamed, we who know what it is to be silenced or to be gossip fodder for conservative bores, we find it hilarious because her frustration with the bullshit is the same as ours! It’s amazing that for so many people that would have been the last straw where they decided Madonna was Satan! Nothing much has changed on their side of the fence. To Letterman’s credit, he’s an intelligent guy and what she’s calling him out on isn’t his true conservatism, it’s the way he panders to the midwestern conservative audience that makes up a huge percentage of viewers. If there’s one thing that’s a red flag to Madonna, it’s weakness of character.
