It is hard to understate how powerful and moving the song "In This Life" was (still is) in 1992/93 when there really was no effective treatment for HIV. The impact of her voice of support for the HIV community, the gay community and marginalized communities was so profound and meaningful. Madonna and Elizabeth Taylor were almost the only famous voices of support and reason at this time. Strong women, we salute you!!

Such an important point. It's one thing to watch this on video in 2024, but it was completely different to experience it (and such a powerful voice of support) during that time period. ❤️❤️

Excactly! Even before: in 1989 Madonna informed in her Like a Prayer Album with a flyer about AIDS/HIV, which was remarkable every other singer stayed silence! She really had the guts, what a woman!

The dancer disguised as a fan who jumps on stage is a throwback to The Virgin Tour…Many people don’t know this, but the fan who rushed the stage in the Detroit show was in fact her choreographer, not a rabid spectator! Loving your reactions. Your intelligence and sensitivity are a joy to experience as many other reaction channels fail to grasp any of the depth and breadth of Madonna’s genius, her cultural impact and enduring legacy. Thank you to both of you for bringing a cross-generational perspective! the Girlie Show was amazing to see in person. I’ve seen almost all of Madonna’s shows live, but this one still remains a personal favorite that thankfully was so well-captured in video format for posterity.

Has there ever been any other artist/ performer that can have you experiencing so many emotional responses during just one act/set-piece of songs..! This blew me away back in 93, and it still does today. Her vocals and energy on this tour were so elevated. She really gave her all. Your reactions are adorable. Your appreciation so evident. Thanks for all your vids . They’re freaking awesome. 😉

This show saved my life, my health and my sense of wellbeing. I was 21 when I went to see the show at Wembley. I wasn't a huge fan of hers before I saw the show. But her artistry and her call for social justice awareness absolutely captured my heart. I saw then how she is not just a pop star. But she is an artist with great versatility unmatched by any others dead or alive.

@hoxtondean9855 I think M came into the life’s of many of us at exactly the right time. There’s no denying the impact and influence she’s had on those of us who needed to hear what she had to say, and witness the imagery and artistry she presented. She made many of us feel included and appreciated at a time when we absolutely weren’t. That in itself is something that few have the ability or power to do for others. 😉

I'm glad you also get to hear deep album cuts from Erotica here, Why It's So Hard and In This Life were tracks 11 and 12 on the album and because they were not singles, obviously only fans got to hear. Their message is so strong and still relevant. Like i said before when everyone clutched their pearls when the Erotica video dropped and then decided Madonna had gone too far and was no longer to be supported, they missed out on so much great material on this album that wasnt even sexual. Truly such a diverse album. And she brought it to life so beautifully on this tour.

Yup… Only Madonna can transition to the next song by serving up an onstage orgy 😆 Why’s It So Hard was not a song that I even noticed on the album, but Madonna turned it into my favourite moment of the entire show. It was so beautiful to watch. I remember when she moved down to the runway how the beads of sweat were just rolling down her sculpted abs. Girl was sweaty! I had such good seats, at least for night two. I watched this videotape from Australia so many times, all I could think about was the fly crawling across Madonna’s chest during In This Life. Madonna was not about to let that little fly upstage her, and completely ignored it. I loved your reaction to this, so good. Can’t wait for part 3. It’s Cabaret time ladies! Like a Wirgin reinvented! See you soon. Have a nice night. ♥️

@@OurAnxiousReactions…. she received harsh backlash from critics in the US coming from religious/conservative bigots, the male-dominated print/radio/tv media, after she released mv of Justify My Love, her Erotica album/coffee table Sex book and her starring in the erotic thriller film Body of Evidence. The vilification was so bad that she initially decided she’d launch her Girlie Show Tour abroad and skip the US altogether. Surprisingly GST was well-received by her fans in Europe, Middle East, Latin America and here in Australia her 8 shows in 4 cities sold-out quickly. This was validation for Madonna’s artistry and advocacy-and she justifiably exuded with warmth and joy in this tour. Her fans in the US compelled her to perform in 3 cities in the US (NYC, Philly and Auburn Hills/MI) plus in Toronto and Montreal in Canada. After her Bedtime Stories album (1994), ballad compilation album Something To Remember (1995), Evita film (1996), Ray of Light (1998) and Music (2000) albums-her career and artistry reached truly iconic and stratospheric heights that no amount of criticism from her detractors will ever again prevent her from launching her spectacular mega-tours in the 2000s in the US and worldwide.

My favorite tour of hers. Madonna has been described by academics as the personification of Wagner's Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art, combining various mediums to create one major piece) and this tour would be the argument. Here she is drawing heavily on Marlene Dietrich, Weimar cabaret, Disco, Bollywood, Andy Warhol, Victorian/Edwardian courtship, Marcel Carne's 1945 film Children of Paradise, movies of Luchino Visconti and Max Ophuls, she even takes up the name of Dita Parlo, star of classic film L'Atalante for her dominatrix alter ego. A kaleidoscope of cultures, styles and sexuality. Madonna herself is an audio-visual spectacle unlike any artist before or after save maybe David Bowie. At her core she is an eccentric art girl translating her tastes to the masses, challenging us to broaden our own repertoire and that may be her greatest cultural contribution. This is probably the most enthused she has ever seemed on stage as well. What separates her from other gay icons is how with Erotica, she illustrates both the ecstasies (Deeper and Deeper) and the harsh realities (In This Life) of the gay existence (and the general life of hedonism). Many other divas at this time at most spoke kind words of encouragement when prompted, but Madonna went out of her way to celebrate gay people at our most stigmatized and socially humiliated time. We as a community owe a tremendous debt to her. The universe of Madonna is so exciting to explore for the first time. What an artist, what a SHOW!

In This Life, that number is sung from such place from the heart you can see, hear and feel it. Her voice sort of cracks at the end and you feel her pain. There is so much vulnerability and pain she presents. So much appreciation for her to do that in times when people seemed really rather turn the other way than face the facts. I cried when you cried watching that. So much emotion. Thank you.

I had to watch again to here “ in this life”. Such a beautiful song. We all know Madonna does everything for a reason and purpose. Notice that she closed the disco segment with a song about her friends / and the tragic aids virus. With the hedonism of 70’s disco rose as did gay men in the clubs and their visibility but disco died right about the time aids was starting to ravage the gay community. I just thought it was very poignant and such a strong message she sent. So powerful. Makes me cry as well.

this show was 'the greatest show on earth' back in 1993. no wonder the queen of pop nailed it so well and perfectly. theres no other artist on earth who could pull this kind of spectacle, staging, story, drama, live band, vocal, performance, some activism, sexual liberation for all including women and queer people, resistance against taboos, and enormous production all together in a stadium. more importantly in perfection and well crafted finesse. there's simply no other. madonna is the one and only original queen before and now still! theres no other. shes simply the greatest. period.

Madonna has always been outspoken about aids and hiv. She was in NYC when they announced the discovery of the virus and she saw many of her friends die. She would go to Europe and look for whatever new drugs they had available to bring back to the USA and treat her friends. The loss of Martin and Chris still move her today. In her current tour she dedicates Live to Tell not just to them, but to millions who have lost the fight to aids. Throughout the years she has donated the profits of concerts to aids research, as well as organising and participating in fundraisers to the cause. When no one dared to talk about it, she spoke. She would include leaflets in her albums with the facts of aids, saying how it’s transmitted and how it can be avoided. Everyone remembers this concert for its hotness, but many forget this moment when she gets serious. It’s very appreciated that you two are recognising this and are moved by her words. Now on to part 3, I promise this time you’ll be able to put the tissues away 😅

Hi Emily and Brenda, I was in the Audience at Wembley Stadium for the opening night of this tour. Blond Ambition had been my first Madonna tour at 15, 3 years later I went with a friend. Why’s it so hard had passed me by on the album and the performance here is outstanding: she means very one of those words and almost spits them out with a sheer force. There was no cure for aids then and it was such a brave step from her to fight against the stigma. It’s sad to think that Gabrielle one of her dancers from the previous tour just 3 years before died in the year this tour started. Keep enjoying the reactions and on the journey.

I've always thought of this four-song section as telling the story of the 70's and 80's. Express Yourself shows the discovery of club life and finding your tribe. Deeper and Deeper is about finding and exploring your sexuality, and the beauty and freedom that came with that sexual freedom and expression. Then the specter of AIDS and the backlash against gays starts. You can even see the way the lights get dark and ominous at the end of the song. Then, Why's It So Hard shows the pain and need for understanding as the suffering and death set in. Then Madonna is left all alone.\. her friends are gone and she laments those lost. Such a great example of he incomparable ability to stage a production, reinvent her songs and tell a cohesive and important story all within the context of a "pop concert." Pure genius and her importance to us at that time can never be overstated.

I told you that you will need tissues again😢: This trilogy of the songs Express Yourself Why it's so hard to love In this Life (Aids Tribute) shows, how remarkable Madonna was and how she can bring you on a journey with such deep core meanings. I cry everytime during this performance as it shows how Madonna was really passionate about; and lets not forget: this was beginning of the 90tis, and she was one of the only true global megastar who used and raised her voice for Gay and Lgbtq Rights, even in her songs and also within her performances with her gay dancers. "In bed with Madonna" showed how much she respected and cared and fight for Gay/Trans Performers as she explicit wanted only them to be on her tours. A true LGBTQ Ally and fighter, one of the first back then (with her foundations ect) and still today on her Celebration Tour with another amazing Aids Tribute during Live to tell.....people and the audience today should know and remember this. When Elton John still was hiding in his closet.... Madonna raised her voice!

I feel this segment was really the heart of this tour and contains her most personal, emotional and powerful messaging at this point in her life and career. This Sydney concert was one of 8 sold-out GST shows, her first tour appearance in Australia. The choreography and look that she chose for Express Yourself and Deeper and Deeper evoked the 70s disco/dance club scene of her early years in NYC when she frequented CBGB, Studio 54 and Danceteria-their Afro hairdo and hippie look was reminiscent of the then popular Hair rock musical and Jesus Christ Superstar rock opera. More importantly there was a counterculture movement happening that started in the 60s (recall the 1969 film Easy Rider) and swept through the 70s where America’s youth was rebelling against and questioning society’s many ills like the Vietnam War, racism, discrimination, sexual repression, religion, environmental pollution, etc.-there was a sense of communalism, more personal freedoms and sexual liberation. This was the context of the simulated “orgy” and message of love, gender/racial diversity and solidarity of the Why It’s So Hard number (from her Erotica album). In This Life (also from Erotica) captured her pain and sense of loss in the 80s when her early Michigan mentor Chris Flynn; young graphic artist and her NYC roommate Martin Burgoyne, visual artist Keith Haring, other friends died of AIDS that made her advocate for LGBTQ rights and support humanitarian efforts to help AIDS victims. Finally, the Beast Within interlude (the B-side remix of her 1990 single Justify My Love) with her recital of verses from the Book of Revelation of the prophesy of end times-with a superb modern artistic interpretive dance/choreography. She chose her dancers ensuring they were aesthetically beautiful, of mixed race/gender, physically fit and more importantly-comfortable and confident in their bodies, sexuality and artistic talents-they’re really an extension of Madonna’s artistic persona. These interludes were intended as concert breaks but they were so spectacular that from here on they became a must see in her succeeding tours. Yes, this tour felt more intimate and theatrical with less multi-media backdrop than her later more open air, huge stadium concerts-but later on she would promote her mega tours by performing 30-45 minute free mini concerts to venues before 1 to 2000 fans/invited guests in NYC, Los Angeles, London and Paris with just her, her band and some dancers. The videos of these mini-concerts were awesome. ❤your beautiful and touching reaction.

This segment is wonderful. I always love the segments where there are impressive chroreos, but in this case i love specially "In This Life" or "Why it's so hard", that don't have a spectacular choreography, but the lyrics are so important. I was always fascinated when Madonna finishes "In this life" and the harlequin watches her as she leaves the stage. These kind of details make this tour so special and theatrely. Besides everything that people have already pointed out here, I just want to point out how much fricken energy she had and how good she sounded singing live while doing all that dancing, running up and down stairs and dancing across the whole stage. Yet, the critics were calling her grandma and telling her to give it up because she was too old. Until the Blond Ambition Tour, no other women in music were putting on shows or performing like this. She changed the way tours are done now. On another note: I was at this tour when she brought it to Detroit. I remember when she sang In This Life. The audience was quiet. I, along with many in the crowd, had tears in our eyes. It was powerful to look around and see grown men crying. At that time, I had just lost a close Uncle to Aids. So it really hit me hard. Madonna def takes you on an emotional journey and makes you really think about the whole of life in her concerts. Ty ladies, for your reviews. 🙂

This tour still gives me goosebumps, just breathtaking ❤ I was only 11 so I wasn’t allowed to go and see it (I do get why now looking back😅) but I remember watching it on VHS at the time and it really opened my eyes to the devastation from AIDS. Madonna should be really proud as not many were so public talking about AIDS or the importance of practicing safe sex and they definitely weren’t showing in their work that it was absolutely fine to be in love with someone of the same sex. As she sang “Ignorance is not bliss”. It definitely educated me prior to “coming of age” and thanks to Madonna I had the awareness and have always taken sexual health seriously. She’s just such an icon and deserves to be celebrated not hated on ❤

Love this reaction to the show. Having seen it when I was 18 years old in London and being a big fan I was totally amazed and blown away with the journey we were taken on. I remember the first glimpse of the huge stage in the stadium with the Madonna images either side which spread the entire width of the stadium and I was blown away. We were at the show quite early and enjoyed the atmosphere beforehand which I can only describe as electric. We got quite near the front but had to hang back as my friend was a little nervous to go any further forward,we saw people being carried away who were overcome with emotion! After the support act there were a few rounds of the Mexican wave all the way round the sides then from front to back on the floor which also blew me away and I couldn’t wait for our turn again ! Right before the circus music starting they played ‘Tears of a clown’ by Smokey Robinson to everyone’s delight and it seemed so loud and the 80 thousand people around me were thrown into such a state of anticipation I really cannot describe the feeling to you. I’m loving watching both your reactions, making my evenings reliving the memories that seem sometimes so far away. Looking forward to the next chapter ..

Just imagine how I felt attending this as my first ever concert. DEC 1ST 1993, Adelaide Oval, 7th row, 9th seat from the right of the runway. The ticket was $200 and was a 10th bday present. My little mind was thoroughly blown. I walked into that stadium, an innocent, wide-eyed child, and walked out a man 😂😂😂

Oh i love your Madonna reactions! Thank you as always, ladies❤ This act of the Girlie Show is phenomenal. Starts off with a representation of going out to the club with Express Yourself, then the 'after party' in Deeper and Deeper, then onto gay acceptance in Whys it so hard and at the end of that song, all her friends suddenly disappearing into the bright white light😭due to Aids. Madonna has been an ally since the beginning and ill always love her for that! In this life is about Chris Flynn her dance teacher growing up and her best friend in New York, Martin Burgoyne.... check out photos of them as it may help when you attend the Celebration tour❤ Thanks again for the great reactions!

This was an incredibly scary time in NYC and America, friends and coworkers were getting sick and dying daily, and the misinformation and ignorance surrounding AIDS created an atmosphere of hate and violence against my community. Madonna was one of the few voices out there who was loving, comforting and supporting of the Gay community, while teaching Americans about AIDS and tolerance at a time when a majority hated the LGBTQ community. Madonna's friend, famed photographer Herb Ritts was sitting next to me a this concert, and our original seats had to be moved because of a conflict with the stage, so we all got better seats, Herb's photo appears in the AIDS tribute of her new tour. Nice reaction ladies.

The two friends she sings about in “In This Lifetime” are Martin Burgoyne and Christopher Flynn. Martin was Madonna’s best friend and sidekick in NYC’s music and party scene back in the early 80s, and Christopher was Madonna’s teacher and mentor while she studied dance in Michigan. By 1993 when she toured with the Girlie Show there was still no cure for AIDS and more than a handful of people she knew had either died or been diagnosed with the disease. The silver lining of such an emotional rendition of this song to me is that her hopes of the AIDS crisis ending “in this lifetime” ended up becoming a reality. Scientific advances on AIDS research brought up the development of effective preventative and treatment drugs for the virus, which is no longer considered fatal by the WHO and those affected by it can lead their lives normally and with longevity.

Not only does Madonna know the tastes of homosexuals, Madonna has a brain that thinks like a homosexual. I say this because at the time of the Girlie Show she wasn't the popular artist we might think she is today. After Erotica only her gay audience remained. I understood much later the importance of her message, the body. The beauty of the body, the joy it can bring and the tragedy. This is a contemporary epic. This lady is something completely different from the widespread idea that one might have of a singer. Thank you for this renewed experience.

But the local radio station had a contest to win two tickets to go see her for this show in Australia. You had to be caller 102 to win. When it was time I called in and the person at the station picked up and said”dude you are caller 101” and he hung up! I cried! lol! As someone in my mid 40s. I was old enough to understand enough but young enough to be sheltered and spared. It always stings to think about how the men just before me had dealt with such fear dread loss and death. We need more art and films that talk about this. My generation lost so many mentors and as a result (speaking for myself) maybe we weren’t such great mentors ourselves.❤

The Beast Within section with the male dancers dancing together received a lot of press criticism here in the UK! It was a time when homosexuality was still taboo! As a young gay man watching this in the crowd it was very moving to see the portrayal of love but also hate and persecution! By the way … did you know the girlie show did not tour all America as she usually does. If I recall, I believe it was just 3 states. She went to different countries. I believe it was a strategy on her end and management team because of all the negative press she received because of the erotica album, the sex book and the film body of evidence. America was as the press put it during that time, tired of Madonna taking her clothes off.

I love how edgy this show is. But that's Madonna period, especially in the 90s. While she was a Pop artist and mainstream, there was always an edge to everything she did. Not to disrespect other artist but no way, i could see Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande or people like that put on this show. It's definitely not a kiddie show haha. That's what i love about Madonna, she always grew as an artist and shes the pop artist that continues to make music for an adult audience that grew with her. I nowadays dont listen to alot of Pop, i'm in my early 30s but most of it bores me and seems so cheesy, my other favorite artists are mostly Alternative, Rock or Electronica artists but i never tire of Madonna. If you want Pop, go with her cause she does it best.

Same alternative modern rock all the way. Madonna was beyond pop. She is an artiste! I enjoyed the Katy Perrys the Gagas the Britney’s and I fell off that wagon when the music became cloying and repetitive and never matured. Yes, Madonna has raised the bar quite high for solo pop music artists that came after her that I too get bored easily with pop music artists with less originality, creativity, activism, philanthropy and longevity as her-she is the gold standard and true pop music and cultural icon of our time. Many young pop music fans ignore her history, groundbreaking contribution, impact and relevancy when it is she who opened many doors for today’s female pop music artists that these young fans patronize.

And the male dancer during that song in the white shirt is Carlton Wilborn and he was also one of the dancers during the Blond Ambition tour and was HIV positive. He also was during the Blond Ambition tour but kept it for himself. Madonna even let him use one of her homes for 6 month when he needed a place to stay.
