This song is a nightmare to sing not only from a notes perspective but also breathing technique. Sing it yourself and see. I respect her for doing it live. It would be easy to want to do this one pre-recorded.

She's just trying too hard to sing here, and her breathing is atrocious, this song isn't any harder to sing than any of her other ballads. She can do the softer higher pitched stuff but she tends to fallback on this kind of sound for some reason. I also don't get the way she kept singing the "er" sounds during this era "do you want to go highERRR" it just sounded really weird.

@@clojapso agree. this happened too with the MTV Europe Music Award. she should sing more relaxed. more head-voicy and less straining.

@earlusmcdivett, I have to agree... this song is very difficult to sing. Actually most of her songs from the ROL album are considered very hard to sing, especially Ray of Light. I tried to sing it a few times and breath control is the key to make it work. The range is also quite wide as well. Madonna has a 4 octave range which is quite wide for a pop singer to have. That's why most people have a hard time finding her keys while singing karaoke cause of her wide range.

@@furbl4345 Madonna is not known for her range vocally lol. She can sing the higher softer notes when she wants to but she generally just falls back into the deeper sound because it's easier for her I'm sure. None of the songs on Ray of Light are harder to sing than any other. The fact is during this performance she never hit the right note once and she was standing still, there is no reason for her to not have control of her breathing.

@@clojap Madonna is not known for her vocal capabilities but she does have a wide range at 4 octaves to be exact. After she got her intensive vocal coaching for her award wining role in "Evita", Madonna said she discovered a new vocal register she didn't know she had before. Also, for regular karaoke singers, we all know it is very hard to find Madonna's keys due to her wider range. Try singing "Live to Tell" or "Take A Bow", they are all over the place in terms of range. Even great singer like Julie Andrews and Idina Menzel only have 2 octaves.

I wish she'd sing it well just once, she used this style every time she sang it and it's terrible. She's running out of breath doing nothing and she is pushing too hard instead of singing softly like the real song. That "do you want to go higheRRR" sounds terrible too lol. I love the song and I love her, I know she can sing it live properly if she really wants to.

I remember at the time people asked her if her voice ever challenged her. And she almost couldn't answer. I think she has a wonderful voice, but the status quo tried to make her think she couldn't sing. She's a very good singer, it's just that the pressure is so high. And also, that was the era of early Celine Dions and Mariah Careys and such. Must have been hard for her. She had to find a specially good emotion to her singing. Which is really the most important thing.

She also didn’t step on the scene as a singer. She did it for money and ended up loving it. Her voice is so unique that it stands out. It has imperfections you won’t find in someone like Beyoncé or lady Gaga.. kinda reminds me of JLo but better and more groundbreaking because JLo stepped on the scene as a dancer as well.

Celine sang multiple times this year with Madonna and it took a toll…vocally they’re just in a different spectrum. Madonna is still a talent, but as a singer, you clearly hear the difference between a singer and an entertainer

I know.. this was just the first rehearsal, we're not expecting it to be perfect but yet she did an amazing job. She even did a few sound checks during the performance 0:31 . The final aired version was even more perfect than this version.

*Although i was critical when it aired all those years ago, I've learned to appreesh all of her live performances (especially in milan). madonna may hit a bum note once in a while, but there are VERY few artists who possess the ability to deliver emotion-laden vocals & visuals so effortlessly. Madonna just has 'IT' like none before her or since. The Queen goddamned earned that title!*

Wow she's mostly on key here. This is probably the best version of this song live from her. She's challenged with technique singing this and limiting herself not to use that much head voice when she shouldn't be. The struggle with her chest voice is painful to hear as she goes deeper and deeper with her riffs.

@@pallafox agreed this is the best live version so far. you def do have a point as far as technique failure , I think it's mostly her nerves... they affect her breathing her muscles tighten (control freak Madonna here doesn't work well unlike when she is a control freak on the dancing) it's paradoxical the woman who exudes physically confidence the most when it comes to singing ballads in front of her peers chokes

Remember, this was a rehearsal & Madonna's testing different techniques to see how her vocal worked. At one point, she even moved her head to check the sound 0:31. This might just be the first take of her rehearsal so we're not expecting it to be perfect but yet she did an amazing job. The final version of this live performance can also be found on youtube & of course, she did even a much better job than this rehearsal.

She has always struggled while singing this song live. I think it's a result of the vocal lessons. She expanded her range and had to face more difficult songs. It worked initially (Ray of Light and Little Star at Oprah or Frozen live) but then as the Ray of Light era progressed she started to have issues and had quite a few number of fails in several shows which is a pity. She is certainly nervous AF, maybe terrorized by the idea of making mistakes. When I watch the Blond Ambition Tour or the Girlie Show Tour I see someone that is very confident and sure, vocally speaking as well.

You are so right, i always wondered why she DIDN'T include "The Power of Goodbye" on the Drowned World Tour if it was the biggest song of the album after Frozen and Ray of Light, but now i see. Madonna is a very proud and perfectionist woman (I love her), but i do think that now we i have the answer of my question of so many years regarding this. When Madonna recorded this song, her voice still had that "training" that she had developed for Evita, but she lost it as the months went by and this song is the most demanding of her in that aspect.
