This tour and film was THE blueprint for everything that followed. When it was released it had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and it caused an uproar. Ppl loved it and the media coverage it got was next level. It was the first movie released worldwide by Miramax Films and made them a ton of cash that funded many of the independent films they financed. It was released worldwide in cinemas and was a huge success making it the highest grossing documentary of all time until Michael Moore's 911 documentary dethroned it. Madonna does nothing half assed. Girls is the first time I've heard such an in-depth analysis of the documentary. This analytical ability was not possible when it came out at the cinema. I was a very young spectator who in his chair was completely overwhelmed by what he saw. Today I think that Madonna has opened doors that were previously closed. Especially when it comes to communication, Madonna was a pioneer. She still is today and her challenge is even greater: what can a 65 year old woman do. I continually read shameful comments about the fact that a woman of her age should not present herself as she is doing on her Celebration Tour. But when I look at that ring full of boxers and Madonna starting to sing "Erotica" I understand that she is a woman with an extraordinary willpower that managed to resist. It's a huge message for everyone.

Thank you so much for including this movie in your Madonna journey. This movie, this movie - phew. I was a teenager when I first saw Truth or Dare (or In Bed With Madonna, as it is called here in Europe). I was literally blown away. I had never seen anything like that, and to witness my hero being this complex, joyous, anxious, hilarious, thoughtful, witty, humorous and accepting human being was so life changing. What she did with this movie is something I can’t quite even express. It was such an experience for me that I’ll always carry that with me. I’m embarassed to say how many times I’ve seen it 😅 So glad you watched Truth or Dare. Wow.

I just LOVE “In Bed With Madonna” (sorry, I’m from the UK😂) Your review was absolutely perfect ❤ Loved how much you both took from it!! Again Madonna raised the fly-on-the-wall documentary bar and others followed! Artists like the Spice Girls often say before they go on stage to do the “Madonna Circle” before they go on. I used to really dislike Oli for his homophobia… but as I’ve grown older and since I’ve seen the “Strike A Pose” documentary (all the male dancers from the show), he’s grown and is regretful for how he treated the rest of the dancers. I now think he’s actually quite sweet!! The Oprah comment I never understood either as they both have a lot of love for each other now. 😮 One of the most awkwardly funny scenes for me was MOIRA😂😂😂 Madonna’s “childhood idol”!! So sad seeing Gabriel in this now since he died of AIDS in 1995 😢 Also I found out recently that “Slam” diagnosed with HIV 3 years before he got signed for the tour as had just graduated as a ballet dancer, had his first sexual experience and was diagnosed and given not very long to live. He kept it quiet up until recently. These dancers went through so much bless them!! So glad Madonna didn’t back down from the police in Toronto!! Can i just say how much i like and enjoy you two? Your relationship is soo beautiful! I enjoy the docu so much for how real it is and not just a marketing tool, like docus often are these days. Madonna has scenes which show her annoyed, tired, slightly bitchy and not always just in a positive light. They show the whole picture, the good, the bad, the ugly...a human being, not perfect. Madonna apologized to Kevin Costner afterwards though. He came back to her years later but it did cost her the lead in The Bodyguard apparently. Your review is incredible and on point as always. We, fans, are so used to enjoying the finished product of these spectacular Madonna concert tours that it’s taken for granted the time, effort and cost it took to produce these. This film also humanized not only Madonna and other celebrity stars with their strengths and flaws but also showed gays, racial minorities as talented artists that mainstream culture started to appreciate and accept. You’re right on point that “artistic integrity” is non-negotiable with Madonna. No amount of intimidation, vilification, threat or adversity will make her compromise her freedom of artistic expression. Recall that Blonde Ambition Tour was originally titled The Like A Prayer World Tour that Pepsi was supposed to sponsor as part of the deal that included Madonna appearing in their Make A Wish soda commercial where she used her then brand new Like A Prayer song as the ad soundtrack. But the day after the global broadcast of the Pepsi commercial, Madonna released the music video of LAP that raised an uproar from religious bigots and racists who threatened to boycott Pepsi products unless Pepsi withdraw their ad from airing and from sponsoring Madonna’s concert. Madonna later revealed that Pepsi approached her and wanted her to delete the cross burning and her kissing a Black person in the LAP mv in order to appease the haters as a condition for Pepsi to continue airing the ad and their sponsorship of her concert. Madonna refused them. She strongly felt that the commercial and LAP mv were two separate artistic creations and she would not compromise her “artistic integrity” for Pepsi or to satisfy the critics. Love this! So the Kevin Costner thing I’ve always thought was awkward because allegedly she was up for The Bodyguard around that time! He says to her “I don’t think we’re gonna be making that other deal” and she says “not neat enough for you?” Which I always took to mean she’d invited him to her show because they were in talks for that film….. don’t think anything was ever confirmed, but it makes sense! 🤷‍♂️

I was a teenager when Truth or Dare was released. I watched the documentary and at the time I thought: "yes, gays don't need to hide". I'm a gay man and I owe Madonna the freedom to be who I am. I really enjoyed your Review/Discussion. There were a few points that I forgot about in th film or didn't exactly realize was going on until you guys talked about it. For instance, I didn't get that in depth in Oliver's dilemma, even though I know he had some issues to work out. I haven't seen the film in a long while, so you guys reminded me or added more of a perspective than I came a way with which was very welcoming. The thing with Oprah, was just off the cuff. She had no beef. You also have to remember at the time, Oprah was doing more "shock value" shows, where people were airing out their dirty laundry on national TV. It wasn't until a few years after, she started to change her format in actually coming up with solutions to solve the problems for her guests. But again, she really didn't have a beef with her. It was just Oprah lived in Chicago at the time and Oprah was the biggest celebrity in the same town with Madonna who was the biggest world celebrity herself. It comes down to Madonna joking there wasn't enough room for two huge stars in the same town. A couple other few points, the whole Kevin Coster "neat" comment was definitely not his moment. Though, years later he spoke about it in an interview and he totally realize at the time (after he said it), it was a ridiculous think to say. I believe he even apologized to her sometime after. He since has seen her in concerts even more recently and always enjoyed her concerts. As for Warren Beatty, I agree he is so "old school" and didn't see the point of airing every little detail. In fact, when she first screened the film in his presence, he legally requested a number of scenes with him to be removed. I suspect; he really didn't care to be part of this. Other times when she prefer the camera not to be there, was during business meetings and specifically her adjustments. I think that came down to a moment where that her "me time", but as she said in the film, Alek, the director "disobeyed".

By the way Truth or Dare is also credited as being the first mainstream movie to feature a kiss between two men (during the truth or dare scene). So it is a milestone in that sense as well. I always like to say, as a joke, that I was part of this film. I was in the audience when we sang happy birthday to her dad 😁. On another note, every time I see Madonna perform LAV, I always, always think about Nicki and Donna talking about Madonna performing LAV when shes old. It cracks me up.

The Blond ambition tour is my favorite Madonna tour, I think it was her greatest artistic expression and Madonna was in her best form. The documentary reveals to us everything behind the making of a show of such magnitude and describes very well the brotherhood that existed with the dancers. I imagine Madonna included in the documentary what we wanted us to see of her, but it's pretty good to get an idea of ​​what the tour was like. The film that ended up being made was actually very different than the original plan, which was for more of a "concert film" with a bit of behind the scenes look at the staging etc. Madonna and her director (a very young first-time filmmaker) decided the interactions between her and her troupe and their families was the far more interesting story. Poor Antonio Banderas! He was not yet famous in the US unless you had a liking for Spanish art-house films with subtitles. But he and Madonna do make a film together a few years after this...I'll let you discover more about that on your own journey in case you dont already know. And honestly, I kinda doubt she had any beef with Oprah at all. She was making an offhand catty dig because she probably thought OW was someone boring and middle American that she had no time for. They do actually have some really great interviews together down the road. Great review and discussion, ladies!

My favorite part. Madonna: Sean....Sean. Warren Beatty was a completely different generation. There's a fun fact about Beatty and the Dick Tracy movie. In the movie, Annette Bening played a love interest. While Madonna was dating him, he'd already met his future wife, see aforementioned love interest. They're still married today. They married in 1992.

I’m thinking the rape topic was presented in a way that it was just something that happened. Most of the dancers later had said that they were sexually abused as children and Madonna saying years later that she had been raped on a rooftop maybe at that point it was thought as something that was to make you stronger and that you survived it . And it was just something that happens. I might be off on that but it’s how I perceived it also from my own personal experience when I was 17. I certainly would have dealt with it differently if it happened in present day. But back then it was something that happened and it just made me stronger.

There was a 2016 documentary called “Strike a Pose” which was the story of the dancers AFTER the tour and Truth or Dare and the fame it brought them. It’s quite good. Here is a quote from. Oliver who clearly has evolved from 1990 “I have to thank the gay community for not throwing me under the bus. When the movie came out, a lot of gay and lesbian people could have treated me like shit, because I was very homophobic, and I was very ignorant. Basically, the guys took me under their wing, and Kevin and Gabriel just took me so under their wing, and I learned so much about the guys. I learned about how they realised they were gay, and what they went through. And then I had a different perception of the community. Carlton was like a big brother, and he was like that with everyone. Even though in the movie you can see Jose, Slam and Lewis giving me a hard time, it was all out of love. And to be honest, I would not change anything.

Madonna would go on to do several amazing interviews with Oprah in the 90’s. (Evita and Ray of Light eras). She was also one of the few celebrities to be at Oprahs retirement from her show. I am not sure what the tea was back then, but I think in general Madonna was caught up in the fame bubble, somewhat narcissistic and immature at the time - she had some Iconic shady but petty moments early on. Her personal transformation occurs after the birth of her daughter and engrossment in Kabbalah. Oprah called her a kinder, gentler, Madonna. Every once in a while her shady side will come out to this day, but for the most part she is more supportive of other artists and females in general.

Madonna started off just wanting only the concert filmed with behind the scenes cutaways, but when she and the director saw early footage, she immediately wanted it reversed. Too bad there's not a full length film of just the concert itself as this tour is M.I.A. in any modern viewable format other than laser disc and VHS and now KZfaq. Still remains a mystery why she has not released this tour to dvd and bluray by now. The poking fun scene of Kevin Costner was more poking fun of his goody wholesome Jimmy Stewart-like image. Listen closely to their conversation where he tells her that they sadly won't be doing that "project" together. That project was the movie "The Bodyguard ". During her Drowned World Tour 2001, Kevin Costner was present for one of her shows and she alerted beforehand and dedicated the song "Secret" to him as gesture of bury the hatchet on that incident in meeting him in Truth or Dare. Lol.

If you can find it, you really need to watch the parody of this by comedian Julie Brown called “Medusa: Dare to be Truthful”, it is a hilarious send up and you’ll get a kick out of it for sure.😅

I wish I could have seen you both react to the Documentary, but get how much of a pain it would be to edit. You’ll now see Taylor Swift, Beyoncé Ect...putting out tour documentaries right after, or while the tour is still going on, due to this Documentary, it was trail blazing for sure. Also, Oliver has done a complete 180 and is no longer homophobic, he and the other male dancers, have their own documentary out, which is worth a watch, if not just catching interviews on KZfaq they have done since the tour. Lastly, I mentioned before, but please try to react to two interviews done for Truth or Dare, one is with Regis Philbin, it was a two parter ( and awesome) and the other is, Breakfast with Madonna, on MTV, done by Kurt Loder, one of her best interviews. Though, there are many great interviews. Lol

I saw this when I was about 11 years old and I felt for the first time hope. I was so afraid all the time because I knew I was different then other boys and this film showed me I was not alone and that being gay was okay to Madonna my idol so I k we I was okay and that I would find my way.

Also I really think that the Warren thing was just a Hollywood Romance to just promote Dick Tracey. You never sense any real chemistry during the tour. The hype for the movie was huge and I believe after it premiered the romance was over.

Loved your review! Oprah was not initially the respected talk show host that she would later become. The Oprah Winfrey Show in the first years was much more trashy (pre 1993) before it evolved into a more positive and classy version.
