People today don't realize exactly how big of a deal this video was when it came out. At the time, Madonna was pretty much the biggest star in the world, maybe tied with Michael Jackson, but even he was a bit past his prime. She was it. And when this video was released, literally hell broke loose. It was immediately banned by MTV (still an extremely relevant channel at the time), and the controversy was all anyone could talk about. It was released on VHS tape -- the first song to be released as a 'video single', I think. She was on 60 Minutes, she was on every magazine cover, and Tipper Gore was all over it. And really, compared to everything that had come before it, this video was extremely explicit. Nobody had seen a major pop star behave like this before. I was 13, and my parents wouldn't let me watch it at all. I of course found a way, but it was like nothing I had ever seen. Nowadays we have constant access to basically any kind of video you can imagine, including every variety of pornography in existence. We barely even think twice about seeing a celebrity or pop star naked or even on a sex tape. But in 1990, it was unheard of to see the biggest star in the world perform sexually like this. Madonna deserves a lot of credit for doing it tastefully. Now she’s a lunatic alien plastic surgery zombie, unfortunately, but there was a time when she was extremely sharp and relevant.

+Randi Sierra Well, she was always flirting with the explicit content but until this daring moment, Madonna kept herself a bit "tame" - I guess the "explicit" came about at the time of "Open Your Heart"... have a look at Mylene Farmer's videos dating back to 1985 - full frontal nudity was all over the place, all cinematic and artistically daring there and then. Madonna of 1985 was (still) a "virgin". :)

In 1985, Madonna was already the Queen of Pop, so those magazines took advantage from Madonna's fame to publish the nude photos. I was in my 20s/30s during Madonna's earlier days. That was 30-40 years ago. Now that I'm older and wiser, I'm just now re-watching the Justify My Love video. And I gotta say....the cinematography in this is a work of art...the art direction...the lighting...the hair and makeup.... really well done!

I saw the premiere of this video. Kurt Loder introduced it with a warning on MTV. I believe they only played it that one time and it was at midnight when they did so. I thought it was so ahead of it’s time. Looking at it nearly 30 years later is so jarring. It holds up so well and is basically a timeless piece of art. So well done. Yes, I did buy the vhs single. $9.99. Lol.

Her greatest album is definitely Ray of Light, and some other tracks are great like This Used to Be My Playground, Take a Bow, Secret etc. She's managed to do it her way. Mad respect to her for that. I was lucky to have known her as an artist to be honest... cause kids my age were very skeptical of her in the early 00s.

Et c'est un mec qui le dit. Madonna avait l'intelligence de sa beauté, et vice-versa, mais sans jamais dépasser les limites de la décence. Clairement, elle avait et a toujours eu une longueur d'avance sur toutes ses concurrentes directes, et ce sur trois générations. Sa carrière prend fin sur une note un peu plus triste dirions-nous, puisqu'elle aussi a été transformée par cette adulation longue et exceptionnelle du public, des médias (pas toujours) et du milieu professionnel (tout le temps). Put it this way: this was during a war. Every single night , on nightline, an NBC network newscast at 11:30 pm focused on THE WAR EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. The original newscaster, Sam Donaldson refused to go on and Sam Sawyer took his place . Why? Because MADONNA KNOCKED THE WAR OFF THE AIRWAVES WITH THIS VIDEO AND WAS GOING TO BE INTERVIEWED AND THE VIDEO WAS GOING TO BE SHOWN. The whole half hour was devoted to her and this video. THATS HOW HUGE IT WAS. Did I make my point? And may I add, the video was awesome and Madonna was THE sex symbol and looked scrumptious in it.
