Airlines and car lobby wouldn’t screen with you, that’s why it never happened on the us. Those lobby are too powerfull and really held the US rail network back. US should have a lot of high speed network actually, the only reason it didn’t happened is because of those 2.

Brilliant insight, thank you. I will have to ride a TGV sometime. I did not know that the only throughfare is on the top-deck of the duplex TGV until this video. A contrast to german duplex trains that connect on the mid-level definitely.

Thanks :-) Yes, TGV Duplex are really different from common double deck trains like RER or S-Bahn : there's no platform level, mid-level deck in a TGV Duplex but only 2 decks, the lower deck (below platform and doors level) and the upper deck. You descend a couple steps when entering the train, there's a mechanical system for wheelchairs to pass these steps. The continuous path is exclusively on the upper deck. To be more precise : there's one continuous, train long, upper deck with 7 main cabins (plus 1 bar cabin) and 7 independent lower decks (the bar car has a technical and hauling lower deck on the current Duplex trains that is not accessible to passengers). Each lower deck cabin is a bit like a peninsula, with only one main exit and a dead end. So you have very few movement, if any at all. On a bunch of destinations the lower deck is more popular than the upper deck because of its extreme calm. I remember using Duplex TGV's to go skiing in the French mega ski resorts of the Tarentaise valley (3 Vallées, les Arcs, Tignes, Val d'Isère, etc.) and every time the lower decks filled up very quickly as there's more space for luggage and utmost quietness in this part of the train (the in between cars location of the Jacobs bogies prevent the lower deck from being noisier than the upper deck). Families with young kids and partygoers were seated on the upper deck but the bunch of those who wanted to sleep much of the trip were seated on the lower deck. It really feels like your own private cabin in a crowded train and if you fancy a better view of the surroundings you can still climb up to the upper deck and head to the bar where the wide windows give you a great vantage point. So the calmest places to seat are : Lower deck > virtually anywhere, as there won't be any people from other cars crossing your cabin, choose the (dead) end of the cabin for almost zero foot traffic. Upper deck > end cars in eco (usually cars 8 & 16) and premium (usually cars 1 and 9). Cars 9 and 16 are in double (multiple units) trains. The seats that see the most people passing by are those located on the upper deck of car 5 for economy (all decks from cars 5 to 8 will pass by these seat to access the bar except the lower deck of car 5 that has direct stairs access). And upper deck seats of car 3 will see the rest of the premium cabins pass by to access the bar (except the lower deck of car 3, that like car 5's lower deck, has direct access via stairs to the bar). If you're seated on the upper deck, the further away from the bar you are, the least people walking by you'll see. On the other hand it will be similar for all lower deck cabins, where the most traffic will be next to the door and limited to the capacity each the cabin. When you'll travel in France (OuiGo, InOui) or on OuiGo Spain, choose your seat accordingly to your travel ambiance desire. I personally prefer lower deck in most case and have a short hop to the bar for the views between naps. On "heavy" leisure destinations (ski resorts, long holidays, long trips to end-of-line) and many professional destinations, lower deck seats will sell much faster than upper deck ones. Professionals and tired tourists tend to prefer the lower deck calm.

Nowadays in Canada, being in a midcentury carriage is STILL common! VIA Rail's Corridor (Windsor to Quebec City) Service, the only part of their network that competes with Planes and Cars, uses either 2000's MK4 Coaches (But barely anymore), 1980's LRC Coaches (My favourites~) and 1940's Budd Coaches

@@coastaku1954 absolutely, I love nostalgia when it comes to trains (and planes). Just as long as it is comfortable of course, I’ll be spending a lot of time on Via Rail! I’m only in Toronto overnight so not much time to sightsee.

@@egpx Many of their older coaches on the Corridor are being retrofitted with new, modern interiors which feel much better. The older interiors creak and look very dated (Not timeless like the outside, just dated). Look out for Renaissance Coaches which are used on the corridor (Though I haven't seen them in a long time) and The Ocean, based on British Rail Mark IV Coaches! All we need now is a Class 91 and we got ourselves an Intercity 225! Might as well get some MKIIIs too while we can!

@@DavidJames-rx1oj It's a shame such a business model hasn't been tried / isn't really possible on the WCML. Either you pay out the nose for Avanti or ensure a 2x longer LNW service calling at every lampost and intersection known to man.

I regularly take trains from London to the Midlands for under £10, including high speed avanti services. Avanti is inflating all their fares now though now around £17 - £20

@@danielmiryt2 UK is way overpriced. I was in London a couple of weeks ago and took two tickets to Manchester - single - peak time - about £270 for two people. Otherwise, the train was fast - clean and smooth. Way too expensive

"Security" on trains is not okay. Life has "risks." It's not worth it to give up our "freedoms." Anyway, this should have never happened, but as soon as there was no "threat" anymore they should have "disbanded" the "security." It's another example of governments getting power for some reason and then keeping it as the "new normal." (and then "often" going "further") and the "threat" isn't really a threat. Meanwhile in America they give out licenses like "candy." and cars can easily kill and maim many, many people, but that isn't a "publicized" "issue" Gun homicides in the US are shown and talked about "so much"- the media picks them up and spreads them around "like crazy," when the "reality" is that the biggest "danger" that someone with a "gun" "poses" is to "themselves." Gun suicides are twice as "common" as "homicides!" But the "picture" "painted" is very different. "The point" is that the "risks" are very small and not worth the "lack" of freedom imo, "especially" "compared" to other things and normal life. But just like someone might choose not to see why a "drug" is bad for them in the "short term" there really is real "danger" in this sort of thing. It "hurts" each time. "Fear and ignorance" might be the real "danger" here... The "roots" "of which" travel deep and far.

Best thing about the UK is the cheap flights out of it

The problem in the UK is that whenever anyone suggests building anything like what Spain has, the NIMBYs come out in force and try to stop it. The most crazy thing is that the environmentalists are currently trying to block HS2. The Madrid - Barcelona line has annihilated flying on that route - I don't see why XR are so keen to keep people flying between London and Glasgow.

Did you know that, for example, the international subsidiary of the Dutch National Railways (NS), Abellio, owns and operates 7 UK railway companies, while the parent company is fully owned by the Dutch state? Pretty strange to consider that the Dutch state makes profit transporting British people around Britain... Exactly the same with Germany's Deutsche Bahn subsidiary Arriva. The government really did not think this through properly when they flogged it all off...

Love too, but the stairways in the shinkansen were just awful.

@@Neville60001 Not really. No regional buses from Tarragona proper run there. It's a 20-minute drive to get to downtown. Some regional trains run through Camp de Tarragona, but you have to go all the way to Cambrils, switch over, and go back. Huge waste of time. I understand why they built the station where they did: Tarragona's main station is squeezed between the city and the beach. There's just no room to put in all-new, standard gauge track and somehow run that line all the way up the coast to Barcelona. Camp de Tarragona certain has more space, but it's hard to say it serves the community it alleges to serve. If I were only going from Barcelona to Tarragona, I'd just take a Catalunya Express. It takes an hour. If you were taking AVE from Madrid to Tarragona, then you're hosed.

Haha, every once in a while they start talking about it but you never hear anything again. It would be logical for a Toronto to Quebec City rail or Calgary to Edmonton but the only thing that's the closest to High speed rail that's even being talked about is High-Frequency Rail by VIA. But I don't expect it to be happening any time soon!

Or Windsor, Ontario to Quebec City, Quebec here in Canada for the same amount of time.
