Awesome content, I’m all ears when you two get together, it’s amazing in my opinion!!!! I have a Sage r8 10’ 6 wt and it honestly handles a 280 grain head like a dream. This line is an 8 wt and it doesn’t feel over lined at all on this 6 wt rod. Anyways, loved the video and content, thanks!!!

In a future update on leaders, I would love to hear why 6 weight is the new 8 weight. Is it like golf gear where they just paint a 6 on the 5 irons... I have to admit that the last 6 weight I made had a small fighting butt on it. And my daughter also likes it for fighting smallies. i will keep my eyes on the future videos.

I usually keep my loop so I can change out leaders easier. Saves money too cause I’m not cutting back my actual fly line. I’ll usually fish nymphs and streamers on the same rod.

So yes....right call for you for sure. Just to be clear though....once they snell a butt section on a fly line, they typically don't do it again. There is no cutting back of the fly line over time. No wasting money in this method either.

I set mine up smelled to a 30 lb maxima clear butt section then just double surgeon knot my chosen leader to the end of that. That way I just clip an inch or so of my butt section to change leaders. The 30lb maxima clear butt section lasts plenty long for me. (7 wt)

If I were to do a short section with a perfection loop to attach leaders loop to loop, would it be better to use fluoro so the degradation of the mono would be less of an issue?

No reason to use fluoro for this.

Doesn’t cutting the loop off the line expose the core? Which then exposes the core to water? Which then let’s your floating line absorb water causing it to not float anymore? Or am I missing something?

They have addressed this in a few other videos. The snell seals the line right up. No exposed core.

So, this wasn’t explicitly covered in the video but why do you cut the loop off the fly line? Does it transfer energy better without the loop?

if we cit the flyline loop and then have to keep adding leaders, don't we shorten the fly line over time?

Watch the full series here for more context. If you cut the loop, you don’t keep adding leaders. You tie the butt section on once.

Wondering if you folks might know of a mid 60's vintage gal who enjoys fishing, can back up a boat trailer, pole a flats skiff, row a drift boat, tie some of the more popular salt and freshwater flies and rustle up a decent meatloaf or shore lunch from time to time? Oh, it wouldn't hurt if she didn't talk too much but it's not a deal breaker if she looks like April Vokey.. Great video btw..

It may not be quite as funny as a "good leader starts in your butt", but I do remember a prominent political leader (name escapes me at the moment) trying to advance the concept of "leading from behind". Or, maybe it was "leading with my behind"?

Why don't fly manufacturers, who have reams of data about the properties of their lines, realize they could create genuinely good customer relations by providing some detailed advice like the kind you and Flip discussed--for at least the butt section of the leader?
