When casting spells with Cascade: The cascade ability will be triggering as the spell goes on the stack. The cascade ability triggers and you cast the spell, then all your lands go on the bottom, then the spell will resolve, then you cascade again, following those steps. So yes, this does work. If mana severance is hit first, it exiles all your lands so the only card left is Jace. Then the second cascade trigger happens, and the only card left to cast is Jace, who will enter the battlefield. If you hit Jace first, he will resolve, enter the battlefield, and your library will be Mana Severance and a bunch of lands when the second cascade trigger goes off. Then you place Mana severance on the stack, put your lands on the bottom, then Mana Severance resolves, exiling all lands in your library(which is your entire library). In either case, your library will be exiled except for Maelstrom Wanderer and Jace, who are on the field, and Mana severance, which has just resolved and is in the graveyard. Then, simply +1 Jace targeting anybody, and once that ability resolves, you will attempt to draw from an empty library, losing the game as a state-based action, but Jace's static ability replaces that event with winning the game instead. Note, a pithing needle or Sorcerer's spyglass like effect naming Jace is bad but won't completely ruin you, because you still must draw a card from your library on your next turn, so Jace's static ability will allow you to win, but he must survive an entire turn cycle.
@MinecraftManiacs1to3
@MinecraftManiacs1to3 4 жыл бұрын
The cascade ability is one effect, not two. The order of the rules and reminder text has you cast the spell first. However, the cascade ability is still in the middle of resolving, so you put everything on the bottom before resolving the free spell. The combo works, your reasoning is just wrong.
@roboninja565
@roboninja565 4 жыл бұрын
@@MinecraftManiacs1to3 Spells cannot begin resolving while another ability is resolving. You 'cast' a spell by placing it on the stack, but cascade is still resolving, so you finish that first by putting lands back. Then, the spell you placed previously on the stack begins resolving. 'Cast' does not mean resolve immediately, it means place on the stack so that it will resolve the first time it is able. It's like if you draw a card with Miracle off Sylvan Library or Brainstorm. You cast the miracle, finish resolving the abilities and put whatever cards back that you are required too, then you begin resolving the Miracle spell. Another good example is Panglacial Wurm. If you're resolving a demonic tutor and you choose to cast Panglacial Wurm while searching your library, you pay all the necessary costs for casting it, and place it on the stack. Then you finish resolving demonic tutor, put a card into your hand, Demonic tutor goes into your graveyard, and then panglacial Wurm begins to resolve just as if you had cast it normally.
@roboninja565

@juter4397 lab man is not involved here, but Jace's ability is a replacement effect technically. You cant respond to state based actions, including losing the game due to drawing from an empty library, and Jace replaces that effect with one that says you win rather than lose, meaning you can't respond to it either, since the thing its replacing doesn't even enter the stack or use priority in any way.

You are definitely correct about the combo working. I'm sure you already know this but a formal explanation of how spells and the stack work for anyone who doesn't know: In Magic no effect can resolve if another effect is already in the middle of its resolution. Whenever a spell is cast, whether directly by the player or via an effect like cascade, that spell does not immediately resolve, but rather goes onto the "stack", which is an ordered list of spells and effects waiting to resolve. If the cast came from another effect such as cascade, that effect will then finish resolving. In the case of cascade, that means the exiled cards are shuffled back into the library. Then any triggered abilities go onto the stack, and then each player gets an opportunity to respond with something else (called "priority"). When all players choose not to use any spells or abilities (and none are already mid-resolution), then the next spell or ability on the stack will resolve, and it all goes again. Most of the time we don't do this very formally, and just quickly resolve spells, with others interjecting if they have some response. However an awareness of how the stack works is useful for understanding rules like this, and also in CEDH it is important that everything is done precisely and priority order is properly respected. This particular example might seem a bit confusing so I will run it through in a reply. Long story short, cascade finds the spell, puts the spell on the stack, shuffles the other cards back in, and then finishes, allowing the spell it cast to resolve.
@YetAnotherScrub
@YetAnotherScrub 4 жыл бұрын
At first, the stack is empty: [ ] Suppose Mitch casts Maestrom Wanderer (MW). It goes on the stack. Cascade is a triggered ability when MW is cast, so that then immediately goes onto the stack before anyone can respond. Despite the misleading card text, it creates 2 separate instances. So then the stack looks like this, ready to resolve from left to right: [cascade, cascade, MW] Then priority will pass around. Supposing nobody does anything, the first cascade trigger will resolve. Mitch will exile cards from his library until he exiles a combo piece. The order doesn't much matter, but let's suppose he finds Mana Severance (MS) first. That is put onto the stack, the lands are shuffled back into his library, and then cascade finishes. Now the stack is: [MS, cascade, MW] without lands in exile. If MS resolves, then Mitch can exile all the lands from his library, leaving only Jace. So now the stack is: [cascade, MW] and Mitch's library is 1 card - Jace - with all the lands exiled. Assuming the second cascade trigger resolves without incident, it will find Jace, put him on the stack, and there will be no lands to shuffle back in, leaving an empty library. So the stack is [Jace, MW] and Mitch has no library. At this point, an opponent could counter Jace, and then Mitch would be REALLY screwed. However if Jace resolves, then MW can finally resolve, and then Mitch can immediately win using Jace to draw and win due to the passive effect. Some tips for if you happen to play against a deck like this and you have a counter spell or some form of interaction: 1) You cannot counter MW before the cascade triggers go onto the stack. At that point, MW isn't even relevant so you should just ignore it and see what comes from the cascades. The cascade triggers themselves are abilities, not spells, so most things can't counter them. If you happen to have an effect such as Stifle that specifically stops abilities, you could use that, but it's probably not as good as countering a combo piece. 2) If you can counter one of the combo pieces, this deck totally falls apart. Ideally, if MS resolves and then you counter Jace, Mitch would have absolutely nothing in his library, no win con, and would surely lose on his next turn (sorry Mitch). 3) If you have a card that can destroy planeswalkers (there aren't many, but a few exist), the best time to use it is after all the spells have resolved and Mitch activates Jace's ability to draw. Planeswalker activated abilities also use the stack, and if you kill Jace in response, then when the ability resolves Mitch will draw without having any library, and without Jace providing the passive win-con, and will immediately lose (again, sorry Mitch). You can't use Stifle on the "you win the game" part of Jace since it's a static replacement effect that doesn't use the stack, but you can Stifle the ability activation to draw, giving you a turn to kill Jace.

Can confirm that the combo with mana severance works. The ordering of the stack is maelstrom wanderer on the bottom, mana severance in the middle, and the cascade trigger abilities on top. Resolving top to bottom, the cascade ability finishes, shuffling the lands, the spell is cast, and then maelstrom wanderer (or the second cascade trigger) resolves.
@baolongtruong4437
@baolongtruong4437 4 жыл бұрын
Checked with an online judges group; the Maelstrom Wanderer + Mana Severance + Jace, Wielder of Mysteries combo works. When cascading with Maelstrom Wanderer, you do the following: 1) Exile cards off the top of the library until you exile Mana Severance/Jace. 2) Cast Mana Severance/Jace and put it on the stack. 3) Put the other cards from exile onto the bottom of the library in random order as part of resolving the cascade ability. 4) Resolve the spell (Or cascade again, to put Jace/Mana Severance on the stack). After Jace and Mana Severance Resolve, you activate Jace's +1 ability targeting yourself and win.
@jasonjustis3098

Once you find the first non land card off of the first cascade, that spell actually resolves first before the second cascade trigger goes off. THEN the second cascade goes off after either Jace is on the battlefield or you've already severed your deck of mana.

I do love the explosive turns they have sometimes, but their deck budgets are crazy and they play cards I will likely never own (cost is not a thing for them really). Love the concept but really hard to pull off as its simple to counter (I also think the spell has to be cast before any cards are un-exiled, but at least you have back ups for that). Primary Win Condition: "Insta-Win" or Damage. --Main Counters: One played spell counter, instant speed permanent removal (damage, destroy, or exile), deck search removal, or land removal (destroy or exile). Counter can prevent use of commander, but would be simpler to use it on either spell being cascaded. Instant speed removal would be used on Jace as his ability is sorcery speed, but has priority (I.E. Jace uses ability, removal gets added to stack, removal resolves first, before the ability. As Jace is no longer a permanent on the field with the win condition, drawing the card causes you to lose.) Deck search removal would be simply used on Jace. Though nitch, land destruction can shut down the main strategy of the deck. (Secondary strategies through card replacement to change win condition don't change current counter strategies). Secondary win conditions are almost non existent or hard to pull off. Again, love the idea, but needs some help defending itself.

Since Jace mills 2, you can still guarantee the win even if you include 2 nonland cards that cost more than 7. I would recommend blasphemous act and one of avatar of might, or Walker of the grove.

@@Jonathan-qk5ed You hardly search with this deck. Not sure why you mentioned multiple search hate cards. (My assumption is misunderstanding Cascade?) Also with 63 basics I'm not sure what nonbasic hate does except slow you down a turn or two. Removal/Bounce spells don't actually do anything vs Thassa's Oracle which is a much cleaner wincon than Jace. It's extremely weak to counterspells but it's not weak to a lot of what you're saying it's weak to.

The combo works, even though rules and reminder text would make you think otherwise. The text does say that you cast the spell first, but because you are already resolving a spell or effect, you must finish resolving it before anything else on the stack. Thus, you finish the cascade effect by putting everything on the bottom before resolving your free Jace or Mana Severance.

I looked up some more possible land card upgrades, and I found two of them : Balduvian Trading Post and Soldevi Excavations, both rare cards from the Alliances set. Balduvian Trading Post is a land that comes into play if you sacrifice an untapped Mountain, otherwise it's sacrificed. This land's selling point is that it comes untapped and taps for 2 mana (colorless + red). Its second ability is 1 mana + tap to deal 1 damage to target attacking creature, so you can poke fragile attackers if you need to. Soldevi Excavations is essentially the same thing but with an Island to sacrifice instead, and it taps for colorless + Island. But this is the best card of the two because you can pay 1 mana and tap it to scry 1. Couple it with Castle Vantress and with all that Scrying, you can be sure to not draw the deck's two combo pieces. As expected, these cards aren't cheap : while Balduvian costs 0.53$ (as of this comment on TCGPlayer), Soldevi Excavation costs 3.79$. I don't know which lands they would replace, but they definitively have a place in such a deck, especially the latter for more scrying power.

I run an 87 land Keranos build. This video gives me glee. My personal two card combo would be Seismic Assault and Swans of Bryn Argol. All you need is sixty lands to kill every opponent from forty life, so if you're able to use thirty of your lands to ping the Swans for sixty, you draw sixty cards, and just slam your hand on top of Seismic Assault.

According the MTG gamepedia, the deck works perfectly. The way Cascade works is: 1) You cast a spell with cascade. 2) The cascade ability triggers and goes on the stack on top of the original spell. 3) The cascade ability resolves. If you find an applicable card that you'd like to cast, you do so. 4) The spell you cast as a result of the cascade ability resolves. 5) The original spell resolves. Since the Cascade ability resolves before you cast the spell, your lands will be back in your deck and you’ll be aces.

Nexus of fate + countryside crusher = LOL 1. Commander cascade into these two, shuffle in nexus 2. Begin extra turn, crusher mills until you get nexus and becomes huge, then draw and cast nexus and swing with the big guy 3. Repeat step 2 until GG ALSO the nexus if drawn can be used at seven mana to soft ramp to 8 and win the game so it doesn't even suck when you draw it, and drawing crusher with at least 6 mana on board wins on turn 7 if it survives a round, earlier than 8 mana commander.

Tactics tip, since you can only play one land per turn anyway, card advantage doesn’t do much for you in this deck, take a few mulligans at the beginning of the game to keep your opponents from suspecting you’re up to something, they’ll just think you’re unlucky

You can technically run less than 97 lands. Since Lab Jace mills you for 2 with his own ability, you can technically run 2 additional cards as long as you can't cascade into them from Wanderer, meaning you'd need cards with CMC 8 or more, like Blasphemous Act.

Mana severance has several uses. It's great with any kind of Storm deck that wants to keep drawing and casting and doesn't want to hit dead cards (lands) like my Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain deck. It's also amazing with Goblin Charbelcher. With no lands in your deck, the Charbelcher does damage equal to the number of cards in your library, then you get to put your ENTIRE LIBRARY BACK IN ANY ORDER YOU WANT.
