The Tennessee State House recently passed a bill that would give public school teachers the right to carry firearms during school hours, and when reporters from the Tennessee Holler confronted one of the bill's sponsors, he fled the scene. To place armed but untrained teachers in the classroom is based on the bogus idea that to stop a bad guy with a gun it takes a good guy with a gun. Not so long ago four police officers responded to an active school shooter, all four trained professionals were wounded in the process of responding to the situation. Do I need to say more?

I live in E. TN. The intent of this bill isn't as much about arming teachers as it is charter schools. Republican lawmakers, whose children attend private school, really don't care what public schools do. Their #1 grift at the moment, is funding charter (private Christian academies) schools with public school funding. Turns out, charter schools are a harder sell to the constituents than they anticipated. If they pass this bill, they're hoping a significant amount of families will pull their children out of public schools. Pleasing the NRA gun gods is just a bonus. ✌

Most teachers will not want to be "it", the one carrying. The teacher who WANTS to carry will be the one to use it against kids.

That is not a necessarily true, but I think a reasonable corrolory to people attracted to violence are attracted to guns is true. I served in the military (Air force.) and understood that I could be expected to use the weapons I was trained with. But I did not join to fight or even use that kind of weapon (Servicing a Phantom is using a weapon.)

@@jiubboatman9352 True - not guaranteed to be the case, but some teachers that I saw in school who liked to bully kids and some who went off the deep end and were driven crazy by the kids in class and certainly could not be trusted with weapons. Might as well pass out the weapons to the kids themselves. Not only that, but kids are crafty and will find ways to access the guns no matter if they're locked up. peace

As a Canadian I'm very proud of the fact that my children don't have to go through metal detectors to go to school. The trauma that you put your kids through every day everyday whether there's somebody shooting up their school or not they have to they think about a gun every day but hey you got your second amendment so you know, thoughts and prayers

What BULL!! A weapon in a classroom with kids, there'll be "accidents," it'll be stolen & fall into the hands of kids, it's utterly stupid. Buy them the tools they need to TEACH, not a damn gun!! Teachers have to buy so much of the materials they need for an average schoolyear out of their own pockets, but sure let's have firearms in there.

I don't live in the US. There are no armed guards in the banks in my country (that are obvious). We don't have school shootings. That's not quite true, we had one in 1996 and changed the law with a year to strictly limit access to firearms. NewZealand and Australia did the same following their instances. It's interesting that many gun rights supporters would agree that a person should be trained and licensed to drive a car but not to operate a device whose sole purpose is to kill.
