Free Field Training, your advice has really helped me along with my career, because of your advice I have a duty belt set up that works for me, looks professional (not some mall ninja crap) and that is just on the gear side. How you explain what an armed/unarmed security officer should do to look and act professional, and how to interact with law enforcement is advice I took to heart and it has helped a bunch. Thank you sir for the plethora of fantastic advice!

I use the horizontal pouch for another important reason. As we guys get older we gain a thing called a Dun-lop... the vertical and open carriers put the mags in your gut especially while sitting and driving. Your vest also will get in the way with them. The Horizontal type stay out of the way, and are much easier to reload from.

At work we are issued the closed top pouch and being a old revolver guy I put them gun side where my speed loaders use to go. This made moving from revolver to auto easier, ammo in the same place and can get to it with either hand.

I'm fortunate to have a PPO employer that allows me to carry my 1911. So I carry my closed two glock sized mag pouch opposite size of my gun, and I put two 1911 mags per pouch giving me 4 reloads of 8 rounds (CA 10 round limit). the outer one magazine in a pouch indexed sitting slightly taller than the other because it slips out better when I go to reload.

I love your videos. I'm a fellow eagle scout and just starting to get into security and thinking about becoming an LEO. What are your options with revolvers and carrying extra ammo? You mentioned you liked revolvers for security work but also mentioned here that you should always can extra magazines for a semi auto.
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 7 жыл бұрын
+Ryan W well there are three good options for reloads with revolvers. One is using a speed loader in a pouch (standard or split six style, split six works a bit better, but I don't own any amymore), the second is to have a second or third gun (chicago/new york reload), third is to step up to a higher capacity revolver (8 shot. 357's are becoming a thing now). The last one is expensive and finding holsters for the more exotic revolvers, especially duty holsters is a bit rough. Speed loaders are a common solution but take significant skill to be proficient with, the Chicago reload was what guys "in the know" did most often back when wheel guns were the thing for police work. Now, you could also have/get a gun cut for moon clips. Moon clips tend to be fragile though under hard use and once they bend it is a bitch to use the ammo in them for anything in a hurry.

Excellent video! I just wanted to point out that for concealment, three of the better ways that I've found to carry extra mags are 1. Safariland concealment OWB single mag holder (I wear two of them) 2. With a tucked in shirt I wear pocket mag holders 3. In a pinch where someone might see the mag sticking out of the Safariland holders I've found that a Leatherman case works pretty much like a closed-top, only it's a little more misleading about what's inside. Again, excellent video!

Not sure if you ever answered this or not but how do you sit in a car comfortably without your gear hitting the seatbelt or jabbing into the hips. I know a bunch of guys who just don't wear a seatbelt on duty but the seatbelt and the seat consistently shove gear into my sides and I hate it. I keep nothing on my back except a glove pouch, usually it's just my HT digging into my left side. Any input would be awesome.
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 7 жыл бұрын
+hagi takanashi I always wear a seat belt. You have to move your stuff around on your belt to get comfortable. That is where most guys who give their "expert opinion" on where to put gear fall down. The same guys who will give you crap for putting a baton behind your gun. The reality of the job is different from a chat room. Start scooting things around and find a balance that is right for you. Sometimes you have to give up that perfect tactical positioning to get comfortable and be able to do your job.

free field training ok, thanks for the quick reply. Right now I'm stuck with a duty belt but in the future when I'm hired on an external vest would fix that issue for me. Advantages to a open mag pouch is it being faster to pull out. That said disadvantages are your mags are now more accessible to people closer to you and falling out not to mention the elements affecting your mags/ammo. I was attending a shooting/tactics course a few years ago where the instructor illustrated how easy it is for a subject to pull a mag out of a open pouch and now being used as a weapon to strike the officer/guard.

Of all the things for an offender to grab and try to use as a weapon against me when clinched up I think my spare mags are the least of my worries. Fun thought experiment, but until we start seeing documented cases of these issues causing injuries it's all conjecture.

Here is a break down of rounds 45 ACP, Great stopping power, but in smaller back up guns, the recoil can be a bit to handle. 40. Cal, Great stopping power, great capacity and easy to handle... but everybody uses it so you get no hipster points. 9mm, Stopping power is ammo dependent, great capacity, and extremely easy to handle. But you might have that psychological effect of people thinking its too weak. 380/32, Really not powerful enough for police work. Its not that they won't kill people, its that there really isn't a cost or recoil reduction significant enough to justify this over 9mm. 22LR, If a cop is using this, don't mess with him. He's halfway pissed as hell that they somehow gave him a 6 shot heritage arms revolver as his duty weapon, but low key he's practiced on this gun allot. He probably shot 150 rounds at a gun range before showing up to briefing this morning. He will shoot you, through your open mouth and glaze your spinal cord in such a way that you will lose all sensation in your penis. But, I'm not a cop, just posting what I read on the internet.

I'd add that covered or snap type holders are better. Extra mags may get rain, snow, grit, crud, lint inside the magazine or case. 👎. Covers or snaps offer a bit of protection. I'd add to avoid the velcro or hook & loop style cheap holders. These mag holders can not work if wet or they can wear out quickly with regular use. Good brands include Safariland Don Hume Gould & Goodrich Blackhawk. Bianchi was a industry staple for years 🚔👮🏻‍♂️👍 but they got purchased by Safariland in the mid 2000s.

I like the closed top ones. The ones I have are closed by magnet and hold 2 1911 mags for a total of 4 on a double pouch as you have shown in this presentation. 2 per pouch and it holds the one in the rear slightly higher. The pouches go much higher up on the magazine than normal ones so the flaps are much smaller and open similar to a garbage can with a lid but on a downward slant away from your belt. Hard to explain wish I could post pictures. Magazine limits in my state even though I'm security I have to follow them is why I chose a 1911. It's same model as another I own and have used in uspsa single stack competition so I'm confident in its reliability as I practice often when time permits. Of course if it was an option I'd go for a full size glock. Less maintenance.
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 7 жыл бұрын
+Soylent Green a friend of mine carry a Sig p220 and uses the safariland quad mag carrier. If you need a single stack that is less finicky than a 1911 you should check out the Sig p220, they even make a single action only model now. Way less maintenance involved in those than a 1911. Or, if you are restricted to ten rounds the Smith m&p 45 model takes a semi-staggered 10 round mag and is the same size around the grip as many 9mm pistols. Not as good a trigger, but still very manageable.
@soylentgreen7074
@soylentgreen7074 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your suggestions. I actually own an m&p 45 but like you said terrible trigger and like any place you can't modify them. I haven't looked into the p220 but maybe I should. I've been shooting 1911s since I was a little kid it's just my comfort zone. But I need to step into the future. Being born in the 90s most people my age can't even field strip a 1911. Thanks for these videos btw definitely helpful. If I didn't go the firefighter route I would of definitely considered law enforcement but I don't want to do as much running as you do in the academy lol. Why is the basket weave so popular with police equipment?
@freefieldtraining

+gary warmanen It hides scratches. At the end of the day this is a job and any way you can get more life out of your gear without compromising safety is a plus. When I started I hated basketweave gear. I thought it looked stupid. Now I think it is the best.

What my guess is that they were used way before the new leather ones were issued and i know that for me. the weave one for my baton holster is a little me loose fitting then the leather one. but the rest of my gear was leather.

if I'm working security I'm normally not carrying a gun and if I am I usually only have the one magazine and a box of ammo in my car but when I need to have multiple magazines I wear I can't remember what they're called the gun is under one arm and then it has two magazines under the other arm and if I'm not working at an event like a bar or a concert I'm one of the dudes that I've heard some cops say they hate because I'm one of the workers for the private prison system (I didn't want Bernie to win) and when we transport people it will typically just be a Glock in the glove box under shotgun between driver and passenger but to be honest we usually just use tasers

+Blayne Peterson I think you are talking about a shoulder holster. Be careful with retention while using shoulder holsters. I use them on occasion, but they beg for a gun grab if you end up fighting with someone.
@rurikvolkov2810
@rurikvolkov2810 7 жыл бұрын
free field training this is true sadly that's why if I'm going to use it I try and wear a jacket so people don't know I have it but I am confident in my ability to react fast enough so that he can't pull it out of the holster but that's why I wear it only in bars or at concerts that way if someone does go for it there will always be someone to help me what's something a buddy of mine said was the only use smaller caliber guns because even if they can pull it out they're not going to go for a headshot the good for your chest so as long as I'm wearing a decent vest it won't be too effective if I have only a 22 but yeah that's a big problem for wearing that type of holster that's why I don't know if you've heard about this but some security guards in high-risk situations carry some kind of fixed blade knife in the crease of their back because that's supposed to be easier to deal with then a gun but I can't find a decent holster or else I would switch in a heartbeat

having all three of those mag pouches and many more (gear whore here), i will say this, turn the open top mag pouches upside down and shake them (somewhat simulating a fight/struggle). the mags will come out with very little force making them a poor choice for duty. imo stick with the flaps. however, if open top is a must i would suggest the bravo concealment mag pouches. also sweep the button snap with your index finger, no need to wast time during a reload.

If you rock your mags vertical on weak hand side they should be rounds down pointed towards your ass, not toward your belt buckle. carrying the rounds pointed forward makes it far more awkward to reload.

@thatoddfella
@thatoddfella 7 жыл бұрын
westin Sandberg I completely disagree with that as well. Rounds point forward just like they do in the gun. If not you're flipping it around to orient the rounds forward. I carry same side as the gun, horizontally, rounds forward next to the buckle with a Safariland triple mag with the flaps and snaps.
@sthollywood9582
@sthollywood9582 6 жыл бұрын
sgtbland since you carry rounds on your strong side having round face towards your weak side makes sense. when carrying mags the rounds should always face away from your gun whether that be strong side or weak side. To get an idea of what I mean if you carry you mags on the strong side facing forward and you slide the pouch around you belt to the weak side the round will then face to your rear which requires the same grip style as you had before when the pouch was on your strong side. My general rule of thumb is all left hander carry round facing clockwise around the body and all right handers carry round facing counterclockwise around and the body. With this setup no matter where you put your mag pouch the grip around the magazine will be the same so your muscle memory to orient the mag to the gun will not change even though the mag pouch location might change.

I carry the large size TDI knife behind my mag pouch. The mag pouch is on my left (support) side. I've carried it there for about 4 years and have no complaints. The reason I carry the larger knife is just for the longer handle, I tried the small TDI and it was very difficult to grab the handle when behind the mag pouch.

Setting up your duty belt you have to take into account body mechanics. going to your sides is harder than going to your front. your magazines should be on the front of your belt. It is way more natural for you to reach your hand down same side centerline vs crossing Center line to reach for mag. Having your magazines opposite side of firearm will work out much better in that fight or flight response. This is a big reason why you're seeing more and more people concealed carry appendix because you can protect the firearm and it's more natural than reaching around. Everything is going to come down to personal preference and training but the whole crossbody thing makes zero sense when talking about body mechanics.

+Ski Fall Nah, it's just cheap insurance. Gun fights are come as you are affairs. It would be great if we knew that we were going to be pinned down ahead of time, we would bring a rifle. But, that just isn't reality. Whatever we have on hand is what we will have to fight with. There is also the capacity issue. If you want more rounds but are stuck with a larger caliber another mag makes good sense.
