Regarding the motion he makes in the middle of the song. He's effectively flipping off "the big guy". The song is referencing a homeless person who sleeps on the concrete, doesn't know how to read etc. The lyrics prior to the Flip off are "prayin' Now to something that has never showed him"

Even though I’m seven months late, I didn’t see anyone answer your question about Eddie’s gesture. The lyrics he sings right before that are “oh prayin' Now to something that has never showed him anything” so I think he was in the character of the subject of the song, basically fed up and cursing the god that he prays to, who never gave him any confirmation or help.

For real. I commented about this myself. Is that a tribute band? A stock photo from the internet? Her friends dressed up for Halloween? There are thousands of actual photos of Pearl Jam available on the net so I’m pretty confused how she got the wrong guys.

Eddie Vedder, along with the other major vocalists labeled grunge, always struck me as so real and genuine. That entire Seattle-area scene was marked by a healthy lack of commercialism, and a great focus on artistry. Bands weren’t quite playing the game according to some set rules. And Eddie, Kurt, Layne and Chris were a different breed of rock singer. “Black” was Pearl Jam in power ballad mode; here they got down to rocking.

Eddie Vedder's vocals are, as always, on point. I don't know how appreciated his vocal abilities were at the time. Coming in an era with other grunge vocalists such as Layne Staley, Scott Weiland, Kurt Kobain, and Chris Cornell, it was easy to get lost in the shuffle- even though Pearl Jam was the most successful of these acts. Loved this entire MTV concert performance. Will have to sponsor Jeremy at some point as well as an Eddie solo track in the future.

You should absolutely run through more Pearl Jam unplugged songs, and then go to the best of the best and listen to Alice In Chains unplugged. You’ll get blown away. And with both bands, it really helps to have the words. The songs are haunting, extremely emotional, and beautiful if you can understand what they’re saying. Grunge is the most deep an emotional rock you’ll find. Most of the songs are fairly depressing, but really make you look into yourself.

Eddie Vedder is one of my all-time favourite male vocalists. He just doesn't sound like anyone else, and he knows how to use his voice to affect. The way he weaves varying degrees of fry and breath-y rasp (I don't know the technical term) into his singing, on top of his already gravelly voice, is masterful. Most rock, grunge and especially metal singers tend to turn their fry on and off like a tap, but he can ramp it up and down in increments really well. He also seems to give every performance 100% energy too.

When the opera singer says “how does he do that??” That’s all you need to know. 😂 You could go through this entire Unplugged session and be amazed. Black is.. the grunge version of a Ballad. PJ aren’t really a ballad band. They have a couple of slower songs, but in general, they are grunge ROCK. Some of their stuff is really hard. I would love to see your reaction to Porch, live at Pink Pop in 91. 😅

Maggie Renee, I believe that gesture over his shoulder to the sky perhaps, was a physical improvisation to the lyric he sang about the song's character praying - "Oh, prayin' - Now to something that has never showed him anything" - A comment on belief in false "gods" or ideologies -- Not a signal to the band, but to the false gods people place in the sky, or "heavens" that don't do you much good in the long run, at least not for this song's character -- PS - thank you for the hair windmill at the end - You have the BEST sense of humor of any of these "trained" reviewers, and probably the most talent vocal-wise as well
