In the early 70's a good friend of mine worked part time and weekends at his grandfather's funeral home. He and his buddy only had a one speaker radio to listen to music while they worked. He convinced his grandfather to buy a portable stereo 8-track tape player, based on the premise that they would be able to play organ music at the grave site. Things worked out well, the young guys would listen to rock after school and his grandfather played appropriate music during the funerals. The day came for my friend to help setup for the funeral services at the grave site. He forgot to remove his rock tape from the machine. With the family and guests seated and as the services started, his grandfather pressed the start button and over the speakers was heard, Steppenwolf "God damn the pusher man!". The music ended abruptly and my friend said he could see every vein popping out of his grandfathers head. He knew he was in big trouble . Try something from their second album, "At Your Birthday Party"

People who are accustomed and have grown up with long form songs get startled by the compromises required for them to be released as radio singles.

Steppenwolf is part of the psychedelic rock genre, the aptly named acid rock. These are great tunes, and many young people heard them tripping on LSD and other recreatables. Vanilla Fudge, Strawberry Alarm Clock, and especially Iron Butterfly, are totally cool examples of acid rock. Hey, Timothy Leary, are you listening? Steal this comment.....LOL.

These songs were SO embedded in our consciousness back in the 60s, that it's very difficult to grasp that others haven't even heard these songs.

I truly believe he heard it. I sat vigil with my dad before he passed on and talked to him constantly and I believe he heard every word I was saying. When he was still coherent he was talking to his sister and my niece who had both passed before him. they were waiting for him on the other side. Oh great now I am crying. But I do believe your brother in law heard the music that you were playing for him. God rest his soul.

@@SciPunk215 I had to reply to this type of comment before. I don't know where you grew up, but where I did, yes there were Pushers. They worked the elementary and Jr. High schools (Middle schools now). By high school there was not much of a need to push, they were mostly hooked by then. If you didn't have them hanging around your schools you were lucky. One other point, the pusher would also push their drugs onto a regular customer that was trying to get off the drugs and break their habit. To give you an idea of the neighborhood I grew up in. The pushers tried to make out like you needed this to be cool. But if you didn't, you would be harassed to and from school. Usually by someone they would set up to bully you. You would end up fighting your way to school, at school, and on your way home. If you were lucky it was only one or two. I even learned to handle three. Had my nose broke about 4 times, got stabbed at 14 (this guy was in his mid 20's - i called him a dumb ass after he did it and threw the knife away), broke my hand on a guys head one time (he was in his early 20's and I was about 13 or 14 - oh I didn't lose that fight). You get the picture. You also needed to have some good friends of your own that weren't afraid to mix it up with just about anyone. Because where I grew up, that's just the way it was. There are thousands more just like me. If you didn't have to then, just consider yourself lucky, but don't believe there wasn't such a thing as a pusher.

The pusher was not the same as the dealer. The pusher went out and promoted the drugs, got kids samples, hooked. Then sold them for the dealer.

My grandfather played 1st violin in the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of 18. His son, my father, was a successful jazz musician. When I was about 10 ('65), we were visiting my grandparents & I was listening to rock-n-roll on my transistor radio when my father told me to turn it of because he couldn't stand the noise. That's when my usually very grandpa spoke up. "No, it doesn't work that way," he told my dad. Then he went on to a lengthy explanation of how every generation has their own music & all you can do is accept it. Then he looked at my dad & said, "But I am glad to hear you say that. Now you know how I felt when you got into jazz." 🤣 Can't tell you how many times I had to remind myself of my grandfather's speech while my daughters were growing up.

"The Pusher" was written by Hoyt Axton and so was "Snowblind Friend".among others. "Magic Carpet Ride" is a 3 minute acid trip! Steppenwolf was a psychedelic band after all. There is a recording out there of them playing at The Matrix in 1966 that is very much a trip.

Snow Blind Friend is one of my favorite Steppenwolf songs. The lyrics are so personal and tells an all to familiar story.

They got their start in the Yorkville(Toronto) coffee house scene in the 60’s as Jack London & the Sparrow...at one time Rick “Superfreak” James was their singer before John Kay....the rest of the side after Magic Carpet Ride is a great blues/boogie joint...the first side has Don’t Step on the Grass Sam....and basically a reverse Born to be Wild in Faster Than the Speed of Life....great band

Goldy was an absolutely awesome member of this band. His keyboard work on all of the albums he played on was tasty AF. For me, Never Too Late was his shining star, in addition to Magic Carpet Ride of course.
