You realize how much he actually cares about the kid. Then you notice that despite being the goblin king he's almost entirely human. Meaning that he was taken in by the previous goblin king and raised by him. Meaning that once upon a time he was like toby, but no one came to get him.

I think it was the lack of a cohesive plot. I mean the concept is fantastic, but it needed something more. For instance some kind of plot device to better connect play that the main character was rehearsing for with her final showdown with the goblin King. Also why is the goblin King so human looking, and lastly A better explanation as to how a story she was telling to her little Brother just off the top of her head winds up becoming true. And I’m all for magical surrealism but it needs to be properly executed so that you’re not obsessing about the details when you’re watching the story unfold.

We hesitate to call them puppets even." "instead of puppetry we're trying to go toward a sense of realism - toward a reality of creatures that are actually alive and we're mixing up puppetry and all kinds of other techniques. It's into the same bag as E.T. and Yoda, wherein you're trying to create something that people will actually believe, but it's not so much a symbol of the thing but you're trying to do the thing itself." Jim Henson often had to struggle telling people that he was more than just The Muppet Man.

I don't know how intentional it was but I love how one can infer a pretty solid backstory for Jareth from scenes like this. Not only is he out of place physically among the goblins, but also as a person. There he is, sitting on his throne, waiting for time to pass while being surrounded by idiots. He is clearly not from here, obviously stuck. Might as well improvise a number and order the minions to enjoy it. I love this film.

Has anyone ever realised that Jareth wanted to send Sarah to the beginning because he knows she won't give up and she will keep coming back so he gets to see her even more? and because he sends her back, he resets time again so she will stay longer! and this then fits in with the ending where he talks about how generous he has been and he wants her to love him!!!

I loved this movie as a kid. As an adult I appreciate it even more for the impressive puppet work and Jim Bowie as Jareth.

My favorite movie of all time. When I saw it in the theater I wondered why I could not be as cool and impressive ad David Bowie in that character. Now I understand no one can be as cool and impressive as David Bowie. Period.

I still am sad that this film was not well-received at the time. But then, the '80s were a VERY strange time for films. People were much fussier & basically DEMANDED to know what each film was 'about'.....meaning which genre. No one knew what category this one was, apparently. I am sooooo glad it got the attention & love it deserved since! :)

He was also smart, an avid reader who went thru a book a day (look up his fav 100 books) and cared about equality and representation, in music anyway (look up his MTV interview).

I love the architecture of the Labyrinth, and how they painted the sky greyer and greyer as they approached the castle. Definitely a surreal experience when I saw this as a kid. To this day, I still dream of places that look very similar to Jareth's Labyrinth when I go to sleep.
