The Yu-Gi-Oh girl gave away the 2nd card before the MTG could say stinker or staple. Also Magical Mallet is underrated AF I use it in TCG OTS tournament play and it's when I know my cards can't affect my opponents board. Very sloppy representation of Yu-Gi-Oh, sorry to sound sexist. Mayakashi would require knowing that Mayakashi aren't that good. The rest are pretty much "is this a good effect with a good condition or not?" and just require a bit of inference about the meta. Like, everyone who played Yugioh knew that Snow was absolutely busted on release (disruption, barely a cost, and not OPT) and that Witch's Strike requires your opponent to do something specific (which is always bad). Magical Mallet is building your deck around your deck being bad.
@MrZer093
@MrZer093 Жыл бұрын
While you are right about Snow, the player base was absolutely divided about Strike and Mallet upon reveal. Mallet was quickly figured out by most as being bad for the reason you said (namely it’s only good if you have a lot of cards you don’t want to draw and at that point, you should build your deck better) but it took a while for Strike because well, negates were and are still rather common and that is a helluva payoff it has there. But the most potent negates get used on the first turn and this wouldn’t be live at that point and thus that slot is better used for a card that can continue your combos over hoping your opponent wrecks yours

14:07 Remove from play is actually the same as banish, just a different name from when they reworked card text iirc What I find helps when explaining Yugioh cards to MTG players is to use terminology they're familiar with, ex: Banish - Exile Quick Effect - Instant speed/Flash Piercing - Trample Might also help to explain some more key gameplay differences, such as Yugioh monsters having haste by default, or how their effects are sorcery speed unless specified to be a quick effect

Yeah, also Tribute - Sacrifice and Negate - Counter, even though not quite the same get the point across. I also like to explain summons like land plays. well i'd consider banish face down as Remove from play tbh because banishing face up doesnt nececarily strip the card of its effect Or in the case of stuff that RETURNS specific card types from the banish pile (think for example D.D.R) It cannot target Face down banished cards... because for all intents and purposes them being face down makes them "typeless"

I like this series but Leoni seems to have a few misconceptions of her own about how things work. For instance, Fairy-Tail Snow and Witch's Strike have the same Spell-Speed. The difference is a trap usually must be set before being activated, and cannot usually be activated the same turn it was set. Similarly, Banishing and Removed from Play are the same thing. This is a really interesting series but it does sort of misrepresent the current game somewhat, especially if YGO player is wrong about things like this!

Yeah, the explanation for several of these cards was pretty bad. Take benten, I wouldnt in any way describe it as as staple. it is good in exactly 1 deck that hasn't been meta relevent for several years. Daki meets the same criteria except that its home deck wasn't ever meta relevant. Witch's strike is bad for several reasons, none of which are the ones that she gave. Snow was actually a decent explanation, the non once per turn, useable during your opponents turn for disruption, or your own to put bodies on the board is what makes it kind of busted.

To add another point about why Fairy Tail Snow is so good that wasn't really elaborated on: On top of the facts you already mentioned, where it can be used as many times per turn as you are able, at quick effect speed, and in response to effects that would disrupt it, it's flip-face-down effect is also incredibly potent for disrupting plays. It probably goes without saying but it's important to remember: its flip-face-down effect also triggers when it's summoned by its own summoning condition, not just from a Normal Summon or from another card's effect. Say your opponent activates Emergency Teleport with hopes of summoning a monster from the deck, you chain Snow's GY effect to summon it and then after that chain resolves, a new chain starts and Snow's field effect triggers, flipping their summoned monster face-down, so now it can't be used for any more combos or plays that need it to be face-up. This includes almost all Extra Deck summoning, and any effect that requires a face-up monster with specific stats. Snow is incredibly powerful in a deck that loves loading up the GY, like Tearlament.

Witch's Strike always gets everyone the first time. It can take lots of text or multiple minutes to explain exactly why the card isn't great, but I think the easiest way is to imagine the scenario in which the card is useful (you have it set on the field since at least the previous turn, you attempt to do something and your opponent negates it) which is already not the simplest thing in the world and then add a bunch of stipulations like the fact that it has to negate an activation, many commonly played cards don't turn it on, some decks hardly ever care about it etc. It also could be said that it'd be an entirely different story if the card was Quick-play and not a Trap. Spell speeds in Yugioh are kinda like the old Interrupt rules in Magic, although it's unlikely lots of people played with those, and the game didn't use the "Stack" for resolving multiple spells and abilities back then but a batch system. It's best not getting into that for hose videos probably, but analogies do exist.

this is a good series, and I do like seeing how different players view different cards from a game they're not familiar with. One bit critique is the same as many pointed out: if the host had knowledge of how both games work, it would make it much better I think. It would allow the host to explain how a card words a lot more clearly than if they didn't. An example, would be when she just stated how tribute is equivalent to sacrifice, however, when it came to banishing, it felt like even she didn't entirely know what it meant. I say this as Removed From Play, and Banish, are the same thing, there is not a banish zone, or a removed from play zone, and if she just said that banish is equivalent to exile, it would have been a lot clearer. Another example is when she was trying to explain what a Quick Effect is, she could have just stated that a quick effect is the equivalent of an instant/Flash/Activated Ability, and as such, usable anytime you would have priority. Aside from that, I think it was a good episode.

So only a few things ppl probably pointed out, Banish is remove from play it was changed to banish as a key word in the game to shorten text. Also Trap cards and quick effects are spell speed 2 so they can be activated in a chain. Otherwise great video. Also witch's strike is only when a cards activation is negated not when a effect is negated

@anond2015
@anond2015 Жыл бұрын
That's a uniquely Yu-Gi-Oh thing. Since there are no mana colors, all the best spells go into most decks. In that case, no monsters could ever be staples. In most games, the term just means a good card that sees a lot of play.

Haven't watch the full video,. But, based on how much she seems to know about the card game and that the first card is a ritual monster whose only used as a combo piece this is gonna be a tough set of cards to guess. EDIT: Okay she did pretty well, but some of those cards were really tough guesses.

I feel like with Witch's Strike, an absolutely huge thing that was overlooked was how it says "negates the activation" rather than "negates the effect". If it was negate the effect it would arguably be a lot stronger as many many more staples (ash) negate effects rather than activations. Also, the spell speed really isn't a problem like others in the comment are saying. If someone uses a Solemn judgment as a counter trap (spell speed 3), witches strike simply starts a new chain as CL1.

a couple of ruling explanation mistakes! bout to um actually us both into the shadow realm cause im a nerd. 1) quick effects are spell speed 2. the same speed as normal traps and quick-play spell cards. 2) remove from play is the old wording of banish, but they are in fact the same thing.

Quick effect monster or spell effects are spell speed 2, normal trap cards are also spell speed 2, so Witch's Strike could activate and chain to a quick effect monster effect if its conditions were met.

I'm pretty sure you can't chain witch's strike in particular, because it's condition is met *after* the activation of another card is negated. So it usually starts a new chain before resolving

About Fairy Tail - Snow, another major thing is the fact that you can't use face down cards to summon monsters from the extra deck (synchro, xyz, link). So that effect can be used to stop the summon of a key combo piece or boss monster
@r4nd0mguy99
@r4nd0mguy99 Жыл бұрын
Dakki and Benten were definitely unfair. Dakki is a staple in Mayakashi because the deck is focused around summoning her over and over to summon synchro monsters with a higher level (from 3 at the lowest up to 11). Benten is restricted by being a ritual monster, a summoning mechanic that used to be very flawed. Both cards are good in their respective decks. The main difference is that Benten can be used by other ritual-decks and light & fairy just happens to have the most support. Dakki can only be used for its intended purpose unless you tribute it to special summon Nine-tailed Fox or do whatever. Anyway…Magical Mallet is only useful for getting your Garnets (cards that are mostly or even only useful when they stay in the deck until you draw the coresponding card) back into the deck.

I've played both for many years. Pretty much since the start of Magic. I mostly like playing control. Mainly for alternate win states. For me, that always seems to be more easily done with Yu-Gi-Oh. I wanted to bring this up because of the discussion of banishment in the video. While there are cards that let you banish stuff in Magic. There are very few, I can only think of maybe 2 off the top of my head that allow you to bring stuff back. And if I remember correctly, it's specific things. But in YGO, you can build a turn 1 infinite combo deck around banishment. I just really enjoy that, lol. I've also built a deck in magic that is turn 1 with no lands. As in no land cards at all. I built it to be a counter to Flash Hulk. I was actually surprised with how smoothly it ran. I just really like building decks, and seeing combos pop off.

Fairy Tail Snow is also great because it can pseudo-negate some card effects. If a card negates the activation of a face up monster (or targets a face up card and does something to _that_ target), you can flip it face down in response and still have it resolve.

Great video. Great to see card market doing vids like this. Think there was a missed opportunity though. Anyone not playing Yugioh watching this would never come into contact with some of these cards at all as they are completely irrelevant to modern Yugioh or are multiple formats old. Might have been more inspired if they used cards that are newer or more common to see and would probably be cool to see this vid. Decide to buy some ygo boosters and then pull one of the cards spoken about. Otherwise loved it

Witch's strike would be absolutely broken if it weren't for it being a trap card, having to set it for a turn before activating it, is the difference between it being too good and not good. if it was a quick play spell card or a hand trap (like ash blossom) it'd be played in every competitive deck, negates are fairly common in competitive level yugioh. you'd be pulling off witch's strike at least once a match (best of 3 duels) on average.

i think it would help a lot if someone where there to explain the yugioh effects in a mtgfied way that would save a lot of explanation. tribute is sacrifice, specialen might as well be cast without paying the mana cost, negating equals countering, quick effect is the synonym for flash and banish and exile are identical.
