Yeah, Matt did not, in any way, deserve a demerit.
@Daniel-cv3dn
@Daniel-cv3dn 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. I felt as though the judge didn't want to seem like he made a bad call in giving him a warning, so he just continued with Matt's (failed) warning to save his rep at that point. Honestly, Matt did nothing wrong. For one thing, Matt did nothing wrong at any point (he even noticed the mistake, for crying out loud). Also, I don't like how the judge portrayed Reid's mistake as a sign of game incompetency from Matt (again, even after Matt had noticed and the mistake), which is completely false when considering Reid and Matt agreed that they had noticed the mistake at the same time. Even then, Matt didn't make it a big deal or blame Reid for the mistake; yet, he still got a demerit? This situation was blown out of proportion because of the judge; and, the players, even Reid, were fine in their agreement without the judge.

@@Daniel-cv3dn The judge should've made it very clear to both players that they have the right to an appeal in this situation. I'm fairly sure the head judge would've overruled the FtMGS. Reid did commit a (textbook) GRV and was issued the proper warning, but the IPG definition of FtMGS is "A player allows another player in the game to commit a Game Play Error and does not point it out immediately." As a judge myself, I believe it was much too quickly to issue a FtMGS to Matt as he hardly had the chance to read the spell before the judge stopped the game. However, one could argue that since he allowed the spell to be cast and begin resolving, he was complicit in allowing his opponent to commit a GRV. Long story short: I agree that the FtMGS should not have been issued, and that the GRV on Duke was absolutely appropriate.

*note just asking a question* So with the silent tombstone being Matt's card does that not put him at fault more so then reid ? I know they changed the rules so that it's suppose to be both players responsibility to maintain the game state so that would put both of them at fault no ?
@RadarBellNotion
@RadarBellNotion 5 жыл бұрын
@@Captmorgann There are basically two separate infractions here. Reid committed a Games Rules Violation. At it's base, he made a choice that wasn't legal. We all agree (even Reid) that this is true. The judge issued Matt a Failure to Maintain Game State.This infraction is defined as "A player allows another player in the game to commit a Game Play Error and does not point it out immediately." To answer your question, it does not necessarily make either player more at fault, in fact both infractions have the same penalty: a warning. This warning usually amounts to little more than a note written on their match slip and an entry into the reporting system. To steal words from the MTG Annotated Infraction Procedure Guide, "The key point here is that both players are responsible for the game state. If the opponent is being observant, they can help catch a player’s error before the problem becomes more severe." Hope this answers your question!

@@KiddyCut Definition A player allows another player in the game to commit a Game Play Error and does not point it out immediately. Penalty Warning There are actually several things going on here. The first is that a player committing a Game Play Error can never earn Failure to Maintain Game State. The only person that can get Failure to Maintain Game State is the opponent. A player earns Failure to Maintain Game State when they do not catch an error made by the opponent. Also note that if a player points out the opponent’s error right away, they do not earn this infraction.

Reid Duke tried to cast Kolaghan's Command targeting Baleful Strix in the graveyard and Silent Gravestone, however Reid can't target Strix because of Silent Gravestone's effect which prevents precisely that. Reid commited a game rule violation because he tried to do something not legal, clearly by his own mistake. Right after that Matt asked if that play was legal but before asking he puts his artifact in the grave for no reason, that's another violation called failure to maintain game state both players received a warning each for the whole situation, no big deal, both players are incredible magic players specially Reid Duke one of the pillars of this game among many others. Why Matt Nass didn´t play silent graverstone in game 3?
@Kaowaul
@Kaowaul 5 жыл бұрын
The commentators speculated that he might have been holding one in hand, waiting to draw a second so that he could cast one, have it get countered, and then play the second one after counters have been spent to ensure that it lands. They then add that he might have drawn the second on that draw step, since casting Surgical Extraction during your opponent's draw step can get you more value if they draw the card that you named. Another thought is that he was waiting to draw an Unburial Rites, which has to target, so he could get Griselbrand and use it to draw more cards.

Nass got a warning for failing to maintain game state?...Wtf. The spell didn’t even resolve though. I think the whole interaction lasted about 5 seconds. The game state was completely unchanged. I understand judges sometimes make tough decisions especially when they aren’t present for the whole interaction but this was unjust. Also seems like a rule that shouldn’t really exist anyway if it penalises you whenever your opponent makes an illegal game action and you happen to miss it. That’s not a game anyone would get enjoy

A top-level pro like Reid is going to know that an all-in combo deck like Tin Fins is going to have a very good win percentage in game one, and then see its percentage drop post-sideboard. He didn't have an interactive hand and the opponent had a T1 kill - it happens. But then he got to bring in his excellent hate pieces - Surgical, Bridge, etc. - and has tons of ways to find them thanks to cantrips, and that carried him to victory. So I think he probably thought he didn't have much of a reason to be miffed, because he knew unless he had some unlucky draws he was going to have a much better chance in the next two games.

At 29:45 the play by play guy says Reid tapping out end step to play brainstorm isn’t a free spot because Matt could play shallow grave as an instant to get grissel in play and draw a lot of cards. But how would that even work...it would only be in play till end of turn and I guess draw him 7 or 14 cards, but he would have to discard almost all of them being in his end step. It’s not a control deck, so doing all that just to fill his hand for next turn seems pretty lame, as it then removes the grissel from the game and he has a tough time going off the following turn. I can’t really see a reason Matt would ever make that play, even if he had it.
@Readceras
@Readceras 3 жыл бұрын
Shallow grave would exile Griselbrand at the beginning of the next endstep, i.e. at the beginning of Reid's endstep. Matt wouldn't activate Griselbrand before his own cleanup step that turn.

@@Readceras even so, he wouldn’t be able to go off too well, not being able to cast creatures and he can’t crack leds for mana without losing his huge hand. It’s so much easier to go off on your turn to take the cards in waves and be able to play that creature to gain life back
@Readceras
@Readceras 3 жыл бұрын
@@bumpasaurus487 Sorry, I'm not sure that I understand your point. Matt would not be forced to go off during Reid's turn, as Matt does not have to discard to handsize during Reid's clean-up step. Had matt successfully resolved shallow grave in his endstep, he would most likely draw fourteen cards with Griselbrand with the shallow grave exile trigger on the stack, untap, thoughtseize/unmask/cabal therapy to clear the way, then try to put vampire hexmage and another creature into play, so that he's less vulnerable to an edict. Alternatively, he can entomb + exhume another Griselbrand into play, ideally with another fodder in play against an edict as well. Note that with mutiple rituals in hand, Matt's definitely well set up black-mana-wise. Keeping a living wish in hand for a rec sage would also help Matt beat a bridge. The downside of doing so is that Children of Korlis no longer functions. I would argue that this downside is not big enough for him not to go for it. Letting Reid resolve a brainstorm and untap would turn on Reid's flusterstorm, give Reid more opportunities to find a FoW, and let Reid disrupt Matt's hand. Perhaps you'd still be inclined not to go for it, but saying that there's no reason for Matt to ever make that play, is imo absurd.
@bumpasaurus487
@bumpasaurus487 3 жыл бұрын
@@Readceras not just children not working, also leds won’t work for mana as effectively. Cause it works when u draw 7, play it and sac it, then use that mana to play some of the next 7 cards u draw. Also, his gris will be gone which he will need to find, get it in yard and get back again to keep going off. My point is that even tho 14 cards seems helpful, it really isn’t cause u can’t finish going off. Even if u clear the way with hand discard, get a 2nd Gris, and reanimate it, how do you draw more cards at that point? I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have animated it even if he had it in hand, cause it would be very hard to win from that point on. It’s much better to hold it and try during your turn at some point.
@bumpasaurus487

@@Readceras I was mistaken about discarding, you’re right. But I still think it’s not a consideration at that point based on the flow of the game. There would be no reason to go for it like that. It would be much harder to win from that point than just dealing with a counter or two. He could wait till he draws discard or gets him to tap out.

Its been a long time since I've played mtg tournies, did they change the rules around multi targeted spells? I remember around Ravinica block, that if you cast a spell with multiple targets and one or more targets are not legal targets, the spell would fizzel. At the time the that meant things like Hex and Rack and Ruin could be thwarted by making a single target illegal.. Did they change that rule at some point, -unwinding a spell cast on a spell that would have fizzeled on the stack doesn't make sense to me. i e, let the spell fizzel (because one target is illegal), then continue play. There shouldn't be a rules warning for what is in my mind a play mistake, not a rules infraction (unless like I mentioned, the rules have changed since I played). Feel free to comment if someone knows the rules surrounding multi-target spells.
@Nanofuture87
@Nanofuture87 5 жыл бұрын
In order to put a spell on the stack in the first place it must have legal targets (for example, you can't simply decide to cast a counterspell with no spells to counter). If after that something happens to those targets (either they no longer exist or are no longer legal targets) then the spell fizzles when it goes to resolve.

@Rillant
@Rillant 5 жыл бұрын
@@MattPlaysRs Judge here, the judge in question just followed the Infraction Procedure Guide, a document that tells us judges exactly what to do with common errors during gameplay at competitive tournaments. Matt received a warning for failure to maintain game state (section 2.6 of the IPG) and Reid received a warning for a game rules violation (section 2.5 of the IPG). At this level of play, holding up the integrity of rulings is extremely important, either everyone gets a warning for failure to maintain game state or noone, there's no cherry picking. But as the judge said, those warnings cannot be upgraded (as in, when you commit them several times they can not be upgraded to a game loss), so it was just a warning to be official.

Kolaghan's Command was casted and he used the first mode and third mode, which was 'Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand' and 'Destroy target artifact'.
