We don't have a lot of Yew trees in my area but I asked a friend if she knew where to find one. Not only did she know but she took me there and I had a lovely few moments with the most interesting Yew. Thank you for sparking my interest!

I have always felt a really strong connection to trees in general! I wish I could just live in a big forest with my dog away from the busy city and live naturally off the land and satisfy my soul.

Absolutely :) It's the Seeds which are poisonous.
@AnthonyIlstonJones
@AnthonyIlstonJones 3 жыл бұрын
Actually the entire tree is very poisonous, apart from the flesh of the 'berries' (which are in fact a modified cone, the Yew being one of only three conifers native to England). If you are desperate enough to eat them please make sure you do not so much as scratch the surface of the seed or you WILL regret it (if you survive). The wood of the Yew tree is very interesting, the sap-wood is quite resistant to stretching forces while the heart-wood is great in compression. This is why the Yew has always been popular for making self bows. The Yew is associated with the 'Ehwaz' rune, which is also symbolically linked to the cycle of death/transformation/rebirth. Most esoteric systems seem to have a similar theme embedded in them somewhere - I guess it's an archetypal thing. Have you considered the possibility that Yew trees are deliberately planted in churchyards so that the surrounding farmers will make sure the churchyard walls/fences are maintained? No livestock farmer wants to loose stock (the measure of wealth in ancient times) to a preventable cause like Yew poisoning. And no superstitious person (which people were in the past, very) wants their ancestors crapped on by farmyard animals, that wouldn't go down well with your forebears.

"The Celtic Tree Calendar" was invented by Robert Graves in the 20th.century in point of historic fact. The ancient celts observed a lunar calendar, which means each month was a lunar cycle; new moon-full moon-dark moon. A lunar cycle is roughly 29.5 days, which means each month had 29 or 30 days. 12 lunar cycles is over 354 days, and 13 cycles is under 384 days, which means there was a 13th.month in SOME years. This is also how the ancient germanic, greek, hebrew, arab, babylonian, hindu, and chinese calendars all worked. There are no such words as; luis, nuinn, huath, quert, muinn, ngetal, straif, ailm, onn, ura, eadha, or idho in the Irish language in point of fact. This is true Irish; Beith=birch, Caortann=rowan, Fearnog=alder, Sailleach=willow, Fuinseog=ash, Sceach gheal=hawthorn, Dair=oak, Cuileann=holly, Tinne=fire, Abhaill=apple, Ceirt=rag, Coll=hazel, Gort=field, Draighean=blackthorn, Aiteann=furze, Fraoch=heather, Poibleog=poplar, Iur=yew, Giuis=fir, Eidhnean=ivy, Giolcach=reed, Finiuin=grape vine. Grape vine and silver fir are not native to anywhere near Ireland, and reed is not a woody plant, it's a grass.

Yew is also used for Bows, dagger and athame handles, and axe handles. Normally ,one should ask permission to take a branch or use storm broken wood.

All I know about yes tree is yes in middle ages they were used for long bow saves against the French. Everyone had to practice this art. As used by robin hood in Nottingham. They planted yews in church yards to use as a supply of yes wood should be needed. That was in henry8th time. Pagans did have these Church ground first in ancient history a d were hijacked by Christianity later from roman and Saxon times. Hope it help Laura very pretty

Awesome video! Great quality and very beautiful and informative! But might I recommend a wireless clip-on mic setup? I know they can be expensive, especially the Sennheiser ones. A camera man would be helpful, he could follow behind you as you turn to the camera, explaining all this as you move around. Just some production ideas. I loved this, so don't stop!

I think it is actually the seeds that are poisonous, not the flesh of the berry, so if you can manage to consume the berry flesh without the seed, you are probably going to be alright. Besides, in everything, the poison is in the dose.

i think if the U tree can be so old and it in its own way tells living beings that it is deadly makes me feel like mother nature is telling me see i did not forget the small things but i make them tell in ther own ways to respect them or death will be you gift ... can sound bit dramatic then but nature is is both harmonious and dramatic

Fantastic video! I like the way this was presented, making it easy to remember. :) As for additional info, from what I've seen Yew is associated with the Norse Futhark Rune Eihwaz/Eoh, represents Yggdrasil (The Norse World tree) and is a very hard wood, used for Boats, Bows, & also carving Rune staves. The Rune is about protection, perseverance, longevity, & things turning out OK in the end. Is Yew is the night before the Dawn? I am so looking forward to seeing them all! Blessings! xxx

Another beautiful video, Laura! It's funny as I listen to your tree series, I actually remember specific trees from my childhood. We had a domestically grown/landscape yew near one corner of my childhood home. It was very beautiful, dark green with bright red berries. I was in love with the woods as a child and can remember specific trees near my childhood home. Most were second growth but looking back I can see that some that I was drawn to were original. I have been so interested in fairies for the last few months, that's how I found your channel. I have no idea why. I listen to videos and follow Instagram sites about them. Thanks again for your work. Jack Fisher -- Dallas TX IG: jacksailfish444
