What a glorious side the WI was in the 70s, 80s & till mid 90s, they were simply unbeatable & invincible. The kind of batsmen & the battery of fast bowlers they had were simply incredible & the opponents were no match to them. That's truly nostalgic Calypso cricket 🏏

West Indies still have a good talent pool but because of the lack of funding in Windies cricket players either drift from the game or even those who go pro concentrate on the T20 circuit rather than national cricket

The youngsters who would have seen west indies in those days were very fortunate,Not only for the pacers but also the batsmen playing authentic, classic cricket strokes. And they played it with conventional bats.

I remember this match really well, having finished my final high school exams the day before it started !! At the end of the 1st day, WI were 0/39 in reply to Australia all out 167. The next day headline in the paper was straight to the point - it said "Windies rip us to shreds". Summed it up very well !!

Today, Jan 17th, 2024, was the first day of the first test in a two test WI tour of Australia. Many predictions were not flattering, and test cricket is ailing for many nations. But let’s hope it isn’t the end and carries on, and somehow, the WI s can be great again.

One more thing - the Courtney Walsh 2nd wicket in 2nd innings was a hat trick !! At the time, it wasn't realised that he took a wicket with his last ball in the 1st innings to go with his first 2 in the 2nd innings. Amazingly in the very next Test Merv Hughes also took a hat trick over 2 innings.

@28:02 - Young Steve Waugh's 90 in Aus second innings was truly gem of an innings, easily the best batting in this match. He really took the battle to the great West Indian fast bowlers. He played freely and fearlessly. The square cut off Ambrose @28:30 and the hook off Marshall @30:52 were truly phenomenal. He played several brilliant shots - many of which could not go to the boundary because of the very slow outfield. The flicked boundary off Ambrose yorker @29:18 and the square cut boundaries off Marshall @29:40 and Walsh @31:34 were great shots too.

For me this is the ultimate dream team no weaknesses anywhere. Ambrose, Walsh, Marshall and Patterson all in excess of 90 -100 m.p.h and the batting greatness of Greenidge, Haynes, Hooper, Richards, Richardson and Logie with Dujon keeping wicket. A truly frightening team with talent, great fielders like Arthurton and Logie at short leg and Richards in the covers. If Australia had Mcdermott, Lillee, Thomson and Brett Lee playing at the same time it would have been a lot closer. Can you imagine if Brian Lara was in this team 😳. For me intimidating, fear, an all time great team. I've always wanted the Windies to do well but they don't have the conveyor belt of quicks like they had in the 70's and 80's.

He only stayed in the team because of his bowling for the first few years he played test cricket. He didn’t make his first century until the 1989 Ashes.

During that era the bowling attacks were a lot stronger than they are today. Also there wasn't as much obsession with statistics.

Good question. Surprising that a man with a mediocre average played longer.

We didn't win a lost of test series during the 80s and were slaughtered every time we played the Windies. His Sheffield Shield performances were excellent (I remember him getting a triple century). You should check the averages of the other openers to get a perspective. Everything changed when Taylor-Slater took over with Boon at three then the Waugh brothers with Border wedged in the middle. It was a formidable line-up that still took too long to beat the Windies! But the Boon-Marsh era was the beginning of stability for the Australian batting line-up

This is a bit of an anorak question: this coverage doesn't seem to be by Channel 9 (different commentators, 70s quality camera work and graphics). Did Channel 9 lose the rights?

That ball by Ambrose to Wood should have been illegal...no one should be allowed to bowl a ball like that...I was scared just watching it from my loungeroom. No Border or Jones or Mark Taylor or Hughes or Lawson (although he was commentating) or Alderman. They would all be instrumental in the demolition of England the following year (with Steve Waugh of course!)

Soon we will have no test cricket. Thanks to IPL and BCCI. So sad. Dont think any other sport managed to destroy itself in such a short space of time.

Scores / Stats were are never displayed on the screen. Boring to watch a match or even highlights if we don't get to see individual scores, number of balls faced, boundaries hit etc. Same for Bowling too, stats/numbers are very important in this game. At least, they should point the camera to the score board on the ground every now and then. Also, this Brisbane pitch is bouncy and is not exclusively for cricket, used as a dog race track too. But what a Team WI had - Greendige, Haynes, Richards, Richardson - Top class batsmen Gus Logie, Jeff Dujon - Top class fielders/Wicket keeper Walsh, Ambrose, Marshal - best of the best. lethal bowlers, simply destroyed Australia.
