The new Magicshine EVO 1700 combines a powerful 1700 lumen output with an aspherical anti-glare lens design. It’s part of an exciting trend in the bike light market with the move toward high power bike lights with beam cutoffs. Although the Magicshine EVO 1700 isn’t an StVZO certified light, it lets you enjoy the same optimized optics and ensures cyclists or other oncoming traffic won’t be blinded by your light. Despite the 1700 lumen output and beam cutoff design, the EVO 1700 has an affordable $89.99 retail price. Magicshine has also incorporated a unique top-mounted GoPro mount to allow the light to be mounted on the underside of out-front-mounts. Additionally, the EVO 1700 features a wireless remote and the ability to customize modes via the Magicshine app.
Magicshine has specifically designed the EVO 1700 to be mounted underneath out-front mounts. The GoPro adapter has been incorporated into the housing of the light and allows the angle of the light to easily be adjusted. Given the larger size of the light, this mount design makes a lot of sense and keeps your handlebars clear of clutter. One of the clever features of this mounting design is that the light can easily be removed from the GoPro adapter. Rather than removing a bolt or thumbscrew from the GoPro adapter you can push down the textured release button on the top of the light to release the GoPro attachment piece. This leaves the GoPro adapter attached to the out-front mount and lets you easily install or remove the light within seconds.
Visually, the EVO 1700 has an unusual square shape that is reminiscent of retro CRT TV’s particularly when you flip it upside down. This is a big light as the aspherical lens takes up significantly more room than simple TIR (total internal reflection) style lenses. Instead of the typical black housing, Magicshine has used a white and gray color scheme that looks pretty slick. There are some angled graphics on the sides with EVO 1700 printed on it with Magicshine on the other side. The rear of the light has a rounded gray shape that helps disguise the size of the light. There is a large 4000 mAh battery integrated inside the housing with a USB-C charging port on the right side of the light. A chrome ring around the lens adds some additional character to the light and adds to the retro-tv appearance...

That's good to hear. I think the front white portion may be metal while the rear gray is the plastic extension. This light doesn't have the normal heat fins cut into it but we haven't noticed it getting too hot.

I'm currently using Trek commuter pro RT. It also has a glare free beam cut-off and is a great light. But it operates only for 3 hours at low mode and it is way way too short. I'm glad Magicshine made a glare free light with a long operating time. I'll consider replacing trek commuter with this when it is available in my country. Thank you for the review.

No problem, I'm glad the review could help. The longer runtimes and cleaner beam design of the EVO 1700 are definitely nice to have at the $90 price point. The Trek's taillight controls are pretty nice though, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Magicshine adds something similar.

@@TheSweetCyclists Yes, it's price range is also merciful. I was considering Lupine SL A7 to replace the trek commuter but a $600 light on a $1,500 bicycle would have felt so ridiculous. I am happy to have another less expensive alternative.

Thanks for your review. I also watched your review on the Outbound Detour. How would you compare these two. I'm trying to decide which to go with. I ride a lot of long distance with night riding. Long battery life and pass through charging (charging while the light is operating) are important specs for me. Thanks in advance for your response.

@TheSweetCyclists 8 ай бұрын
Thanks! I think the Outbound Detour and EVO 1700 are both great choices and both support pass-through USB-C charging). I like the EVO 1700's lens design more as it has a sharp beam cutoff and a high and low beam so if you do a lot of riding on busy bike trails I think the EVO 1700 has an advantage. Also the top GoPro mount is also perfect if you have an out-front mount. Otherwise, the Outbound Detour has a wider beam which lets you see more around you. The Outbound Lighting mount is a little more finicky (you have to remember how to insert / remove it from the mount) but has been working well for us and it's actually the light we still use daily.

@@TheSweetCycliststhanks for the comparison. I’ve had both the Outbound road lights and am still using the Detour as my main light as well. I emailed them when the Detour first came out and basically asked for all the features this MagicShine has (high/low beam, wireless remote, etc.) They hinted that something like that is in the pipeline. That would be the ultimate light for me; USA made with better beam optics and all these great features.

The remote has two buttons so a double press of the bottom button switches between modes - a double press of the other button activates flash mode. You do a short press of the top button to switch between max-output mode and your previous mode. That is the functionality you could use - leave it in low mode but press the button to go full-output high-beam. Then you can do a single press and revert back to a more friendly low beam mode.

While I do like this light a lot, the fact that it loses remote functionality below a certain charge output from the battery is quite an annoyance. While it's only supposed to happen under a critical percentage, I usually have it happen after slightly under 2 hours of use in Night Flash mode, sometimes earlier, sometimes later - it's rather temperamental. The Night Flash being locked to the remote is also kind of a baffling choice. You can't run this as the only front light IMO, gotta run it with at least 1 backup. @@ZioComposite I'm using the NiteRider Lumina 1800. It's basically a floodlight that produces tons of light, therefore to avoid blinding people and traffic, I need to tilt the beam up and down, which isn't that all that bad. I've had this light for years and it has served me well. Years ago the light came off the mount going down a bumpy street at close to 30 mph. The light suffered no damage at all. Most of the time I use the lowest or next up setting. One complaint it has an exclusive charge port, witch is far less convenient than a USB-C charger. The Lumina 1800 today is still a very good light, however MagicShine provides a lot of new tech advancements to their new line of bike lights at an affordable value. If you're considering buying the EVO 1700 light for urban use, this light checks a lot of boxes. Keep in mind I haven't seen this beam yet. I'm pretty fussy on the what kind of quality characteristics for night riding. To me, head and taillights are a big deal for my safety. The MagicShine return policy is, if you buy a light from MagicShine and there is a defect, they will pay for return shipping. However, if for some reason the light just isn't right for you and you wish to return it, the cost of return shipping is at your expense. Good luck on what ever light you chose.
