Hey everyone. In this video I will be reviewing the #magicyoyo V8
What's interesting is that there's very little information out on this yoyo aside from it being sold on Amazon. It's not even listed on Magic YoYo's site. But let's get to the review.
The V8 is also priced very well at $13-15 (at the time of recording) which puts it in the same realm as the Hertz. First impressions is that the shape is very different than the Hertz but it plays slightly different but even during play the yoyo sounds almost the same (most likely because it's due to MagicYoYo's bearing but not all MagicYoYos sound the same even if it's using the same kind of bearing).
It sports a V profile with semi-rounded rims and the center of the cup has a slight mound and spire. The rim portion in the doesn't have curves but instead has steps machined, this usually means that thumb grinds will have to be done at a tilt. Finger spins will have to be off centered but it feels a little easier to perform than the Hertz.
That mound also adds an additional feature giving the V8 slightly better stability and bounce during play. Coupled with a blasted finish and very very small laser engraving on the outer edge of the rim, very subtle and doesn't affect any kind of grinds.
The specs says that it's a little heavier than the Hertz but I didn't feel any difference at all. It's also slightly narrower than the Hertz (.5mm) so horizontal play is doable but there's definitely other yoyos better suited for that.
I personally feel that the V8 is a more refined Hertz, I'm giving it a 53C/47R for the weight distribution (C=center, R=rim). It has a little bit more bounce feel compared to the Hertz but it honestly plays very balanced. Not too much rim weight distribution giving it a light almost floaty feel but that small mound definitely changes the dynamic of the V8. Where the Hertz may have a slight edge on rim weight, the V8 gives you a little more control especially with the weight and design so this is great to polish on speed play.
But the biggest kicker is...this is less than $15! I know it doesn't have anything that is a standout feature, but for that price and it's performance makes it practically an every day carry (EDC) without any worries of hitting the ground (I'm not suggesting you do that but I'm sure you know what I mean). Just be aware that there's a responsive version which I accidentally purchased buuuuuuuut I'll try it out as responsive to see if the experience just as good.
Final thoughts is...I'm not sure why this yoyo isn't being talked about. I cover a lot of "budget" yoyos on my channel but I do compare them with other modern yoyos with significantly higher price points, like the Miracle (congrats on Mir Kim for the 1A win at Worlds 2023) and the V8 outperforms the cost of this throw. Is this the new Hertz? I can't say for certain but personally I feel it is, but what do you all think? Have you bought one as well? How do you like it?
