Another discussion coming atcha! I know it’s a bit of a ramble, sorry. I’ll try to make more sense of these as time goes on.

bimetals and monometals infact play the same way in almost every case because they are trying to achieve the same goals in long spintimes, large catchzones and high tiltresistance. Only the way the rimweight is achieved differs.

As I pointed out on reddit lately, I'm starting to amass a nice humble bit of throws including several quality bimetals like the Space Cadet, Navigator and Ex Machina but my favorite long spinning yoyo of them all is the monometal Cappuccino by Throw Cafe, it spins forever and is super stable with no detectable vibe. Weighing in just over 61grams it's light and nimble. So absolutely, design is paramount.

You know what was the funniest and craziest thing I've ever seen in the yoyo industry?? Yoyofactory took a very well known, very awesome (still my favorite true undersized yoyo. ) Aoda Dancing Pearl and ReBranded it as the "JK" as it's own. It would be as if YYF rebranded a well known Magic Yoyo today. Man I wish the old YoyoNation and the people on there were back. It was so big, so active, uncensored and cutthroat. All the owners of the companies were on there talking trash too.

So I'm rambling now too. I find this topic a bit fascinating because I've wondered, worth the hype, the extra $$$, is it really different??? I didn't know the answer. Now I think I do have a bit of an objective opinion as my tricks have become more tech oriented. As we go thru combos of normal string yoyo interactions such as catches and rolls on and thru and off mounts we naturally catch the yoyo to one side or adjust the string to keep the yoyo from titling off plane. We do this so naturally that it's just part of mindless instinctive play but as tech routines develop the yoyo plays less of an active role as string manipulation increases and the yoyo becomes a bystander. Learning such tech routines involve much more hand position and string position demands and the yoyo just spins as we learn. Going thru this process I can definitely vouch for the stability of the bi metals, as I can get thru certain tech and string manipulations without the yoyo tilting. It's NOT spin time that allows me to get thru this but the increased stability.

I agree with you. After a certain point (around $30 I think) it is the player that makes the throw. Bimetals give you more design options to find the best fits for you. But design quality and manufacturing are more important than the actual material. Thanks for sharing your opinions!

Great topic. One aspect that nobody has pointed is that bimetals are like "sport gear" for competitors. Yes, you don't need a bimetal at all for any trick, but imagine being a serious competitor who has a ton of things to handle at the same time, the added stability of a bimetal will help you focus on your evals or your trick difficulty. Saying that bimetals are stupid and that they are not necessary is like saying that you can run a marathon in flip flops, yea you can, but it won't help you at all. Same goes for topics such as centering bearings vs flat bearings.

Only when it attempts on design extremes such as extremely light weight(machinaTion), super torque(Firrox, Pragma, Tsunami), or as a cheaper alternative to designing and machining complex parts (Yoyojams were experts in this)
