You did a heck of a job, Zach! I am terrified of heights and climbing has been slowly helping with that for me too, but I still haven't approached the top rope walls in my gym since they sit around 58ft. But seeing you face it head on is giving me a bit of encouragement to just try it!

To yourself and anyone considering trying climbing as a novice, other climbers will be MORE than happy to show you how to climb problems you can't figure out. Like that blue one you said you couldn't have done on your own without Magnus showing you? Ask someone who's climbing other problems of the same difficulty, "hey, can you help me? I want to climb this one, but don't know how." It's a workout, but it feels like running around a playground, but for adults. It's the best way to work out imo.

I have a few tips for you in case you wanna get better at climbing. 1st tip: Pull ups, pull ups, pull ups. A big part of climbing is pulling your body up with your arms (🤯). 2nd tip: Grip of steel. The best way to do this is to just get a grip trainer and use it (I’ll add a link to the one I use if anyone wants) for about 1-2 minutes on each arm. 3rd tip: Core like a giraffes neck. Often when climbing (mainly when dong an overhang problem) to carry and your legs and upper body. 4th tip: Chalk of Olympus. If your chalk is of bad quality, it’ll stick badly to your hands and be ripped off on the first hold. Bad chalk will also barely help with friction and your fingers will slip off as if you didn’t even use chalk. The chalk Magnus sells is (from what I’ve heard) extremely good and probably the best chalk out there. 5th tip: Shoes like spiders feet. At “16:44” you said that Magnus said that good shoes do nothing and it looked like his shoes definitely made a difference. Magnus said that on easier boulders it doesn’t make a difference as there is tons of amazing footing. You are right about the shoes making a difference. Having sticky/grippy shoes helps a LOT. A lot of boulders are impossible without good shoes as the holds/stepping stones aren’t very good for standing on or holding onto without grippy enough shoes. 6th tip: Tongue like flexibility. If you’re not flexible enough some problems can’t be done as you, for example need to set a foot on a hold you’re holding onto with your hand (🤯). If you can’t get your foot on the hold to use as footing so you can move on, it will be a problem. 7th tip: Technique and technicality. You’ll learn most of the technical stuff as you go. The main ones would be (imo) ankle hooking and toe hooking. These are very useful for control and balance. 8th and last tip: Calisthenics. Callisthenics is by far the best workout route for getting good at climbing as you mainly focus on your upper body and core. You should obviously still keep your legs in shape so they don’t become sticks. Last thing. While Magnus calls you a natural, I call you a disgrace. I’m only kidding, I’d say you’re an above average first timer. And as a climber myself, I hope you continue to enjoy climbing and recommend it to others so climbing as a sport can grow. Side note: Didn’t mean to make this a whole a** essay 💀

Hey Magnus, I wanted to thank you for all of your videos. Ive struggled with chronic pain for the past decade. And it took me years to start moving again. But I build it up slowly with walking 20 mins everyday untill I could do more. And also 5 push ups everyother day and build that up overtime. 3 months ago I finally felt strong enough to start climbing myself! In that time I started really slow by climbing only once a week, doing easy routes and resting alot. But by doing so consitently ive now been able to climb a few 6b routes and even a 6c route! Im extremely excited to keep improving and see where I can go! So thank you for the extra motivation I got thanks to your videos, it has been very helpful and fun!

Nicely done. Looks like he's climbed before. I've never seen a beginner hop on the wall and move like that: using tip of big toe only and not mid sole, crossing center line with feet and flagging to the outside, placing toes on holds with precision and softness, rock overs, straight arms, no frog stepping, etc. Either Magnus explained all of this stuff to him before rolling, or he's been on a climbing wall before. Because nobody's instincts are that good where they can nail techniques like that on day one that usually take 3-5 months to "click".
@kylem8127
@kylem8127 10 ай бұрын
exactly. no way dude is a beginner. even the way he asks Mangus if he's ready to "top-rope" - as a newbie you aren't differentiating bouldering and top-roping unless you've been in that world. kinda corny for Zach to mis-represent.
@FourT6and22
@FourT6and22 10 ай бұрын
@@kylem8127 Yeah. And there's something I noticed that really gives it away. EVERY beginner I've ever seen, when they step, they place their foot high above the foothold by at least 6 inches and then flop down onto the hold with their foot because they haven't developed the hand-foot coordination yet. Climbers with experience place their toe precisely and gently on the hold. That takes time to learn the muscle memory. Even if they're athletic in other ways.

Zach's asking really smart questions. My friend took me climbing for the first time a month ago and I'm hooked, but damn some of the things Zach's asking no one's ever really told me and I didn't realize to ask 😄 very helpful

Magnus brings in Olympic gymnasts, and this humble guy who does video editing tricks is doing better than any of them. I hope he keeps climbing after making this video.

The whole time I was wondering if Magnus was getting reverse pranked, and at the end there Zach was so impressive Magnus was legitimately unsure if Zach had climbed before.
