I saw a story in the Daily Mail a few years back about people complaining that they couldn't see the picture on their flat panel TVs because the smoke resin built up in the gap , maybe between the LCD and the backlights, that's vented to the outside air for cooling. Maybe some outdoor sets wouldn't have that problem. The whole thing reminds me of when Ike Turner spent over 1 million on a new studio and, with his friends, proceeded to ruin all the equipment by spilling cocaine powder into the controls.

I worked on these sets in 1962 at Dayton's in Minneapolis. This was a basic radio-phono combo, priced within everybody's budget. They never excelled in sound quality but were OK in the home. Our shop at the Third Avenue warehouse opened every carton and tested these sets before they went to the customer. We found a good 20% stereo failure rate and repaired them before they went to the customer. From that experience we set up an inspection line next to the shop and all tv, radio and phono were checked out before going to customer. The record changers were a miracle for reliability. We did, however, find a high stereo failure rate among the cartridges. Magnavox chose a different cartridge and problem solved. The clever indexing system always set the tone arm on the record correctly. The next version of this model had an adapter socket to connect an optional stereo FM kit.

I've got a beautiful early 70s Magnavox turntable 8 track combo. The turn table need doesn't want to fall on to the record that's spinning though. Do you know why it would stop going into position It just hovers over the record.

At 19:10 it's probably a good thing that you are wearing rubber gloves, because on some vintage equipment the RCA shield is also a *power supply ground* between the preamp and the power amp. I found this out the hard way when I was trying to track down some residual noise issues on a Danelectro guitar amp with a top mounted preamp containing two 12AX7's, and a bottom mounted amplifier and power supply. The umbilical cable connecting the two chassis carried B+ and heater current but didn't include a ground wire, and when I unplugged the RCA cable with one hand my other hand was resting on the amp chassis, so I became the ground return circuits and I got zapped with full B+ right through my chest. Just something to be aware of.
@lwilton
@lwilton 2 жыл бұрын
That must be a guitar amp thing. I've never seen anything like that in radio or hifi equipment. It is bad engineering to have a low-level signal shield carrying DC current, as it can be induced as noise into the signal. In this case it could induce really nasty feedback.
@goodun2974
@goodun2974 2 жыл бұрын
@@lwilton , yup, a Danelectro guitar amp ---- they built most of the commonest Silvertone guitar amps, and so there may be other similar models with the same "shocking" design flaw; any amplifier with top mounted control panel, especially one with preamp tubes and active circuitry (like the Dan-o amp) and bottom mount amplifier should be assumed to be similarly in need of safety modification or at least some ground-loop removal by floating the shields. Interestingly, the shield-as-power-supply-ground scenario did not cause any major additional hum with the Danelectro, even though I had already added a grounded power cord to the amp chassis . On the other hand, I've worked on a rare Masco guitar/PA combo amp ( beloved by harp players) with bottom amp and top-mounted control panel (no tubes, no active circuitry) that hummed badly after upgrading to a grounded power cord. Adding a ground wire between the two chassis and floating the shields at one end cured it. (PS, any Silvertone amp with sn aluminum chassis is almost certainly a Danelectro product).

I too inherited one just like this one except for slightly different styling but very close and the same electronics. I remember reading the owner's manual and it stating that the FCC had not quite yet approved FM Stereo broadcasts; so when it was approved, you could buy a "Multiplex Adapter" to listen to FM stereo. This had RCA inputs on the bottom of the tuner, along with the phono and tape ins/outs. I tried like crazy (around 1978) to try and find a Multiplex Adapter for my stereo and it was not to be found anywhere.

Seeing that console brings back some disturbing yet memorable memories of my teenaged music experience. A friend of mine in Jr High, Chris had the family's stereo (this model) hooked up to a pair of Peavey Thunder Columns (each containing 6 12" full range speakers, trimmed by brushed silver anodized aluminum panels that every kid would drool over) in an empty spare bedroom. We'd skip school occasionally and go over to his house, sit in that room, smoke pot and listen to our favorite rock bands 'come to life', those speakers and the el84 (6BQ5) output section of that stereo driving them were that good...and LOUD. I wonder if the neighbors ever informed his parents what was going on at times while they were at work. Ahhh memories

I just started binge watching your KZfaq videos and I've been blown away by your knowledge and deadpan humor. The deep dive resurrections on TVs and radios I remember from my youth, sitting on the display floor at Korvettes or JC Penny stores, are fantastic. What throwback memories! One noteworthy TV we had was a "modern style" Curtis Mathes 25 inch console in a cabinet wrapped in faux leather with chrome trim...late 70s vintage and I remember that thing arcing with a frightening snap that would light up the wall behind it 2 or 3 times a day! Our TVs were always an experiment in brutal use as they were on nearly 20 hours a day every day. I never saw my Dad move so fast as when he had to drive to Sears and replace the living room TV once it had given up the ghost. It was like a death in the family. We watched so much TV in my house growing up my best friend used to refer to me as a "vidiot". The TV repair man with his tool case with the mirror inside the lid was like a family member...always making house calls. Bravo for bringing these temperamental electronic antiques back to life!

Never seen one of these consoles with only two 6BQ5 outputs, they are usually two pair in push pull. Single ended is only 5.7 watts output at 250v plates and -17v grid. This one is only 165v plates, so I am guessing 3 watts per channel? With 15" woofers? That don't seem right, what do you think? (well actually 244v, 165v was when it was being dragged down by grid leakage, also the distortion at 5.7 watts is 10% THD and that would not be hifi, 1% THD in this era was considered acceptable)

@@zulumax1 appears to be the case - single ended stereo. 2-3 watts per channel. I've read some people like the sound of these amps. 3 watts can be quite loud, but naturally it's not going to be some .01% THD performer.

This video sure brought back memories!! Hours as a kid playing the Beach Boys, Mamas and Papas, Elton John, CCR and the Beatles on one as a kid. An uncle of mine, James Rosenbalm, was an engineer at Magnavox in Jefferson City, TN in the 1960s. I think he had a hand in the design of this series of stereos. I know he had some amplifier and oscillator patents with Magnavox but I don't know the details. He was also big into ham radio. James died in 1985 and my father 3 years ago so I have no way to find out any details of exactly what he did. But I do remember that as a child in the late 60s and early 70s we had this exact model as did another uncle on dad's side. I think my aunt may still have it. Sadly it's probably loaded with cigarette tar as they both were heavy smokers. Lung cancer got him in 2009 at 81 and she suffers from Emphysema and COPD at 84. No surprises there... As a lifelong none smoker I used to hate to go to their house because it stunk so bad and then you stink after the visit.

Generally the content is far better than blankly staring at mainstream tele... which is why I don't even one 1 tv set, plenty of radios though. Haha cigarette infused glaze and paste and pralines 😅 lots of your phrases crack me up. So do many of your techniques of diagnosis, even though I know what you're up to before you explain

You should try working on the Aussie sets Shango! My mum has a Kriesler multi sonic hifi 3 way radio gram with electrostatic tweeters. When she bought it in 1965ish, it was state of the art. Separate power supply but the tubes were mounted on the main guts upside down underneath the power switches and volume and treble bass etc? This meant that the heat had no where to go and over a Jurassic period of time it just died. The components were well done. The sad thing is that it could be restored but we don't have the technicians here to do it. I tried to at least spray the pots with deoxit but the tubes have had it along with the caps and everything else. I plugged a modern turntable into it using a preamp before it died and boy did it sound great. Push pull. 10 watts per channel sounded like 100 watts. It was a kicker. I'm gonna hold onto it cos Australia is having a bit of a valve or tube as you call them revival. Me personally I'm a valve man born in 1961 so I grew up with all this stuff. Now I own 3 new valve amplifiers a Primaluna HP is in my bedroom. I love it. All point to point wiring and no PCBs. I own a Leak Stereo 20 too. It needs work and I found a tech who can restore it. Cheers and keep the videos coming and have a nice soothing cigarette. Andrew from OZ. i

This is one ☝️ of the best record players I’ve seen on your channel. Big driver cones. I can’t tell if this is tube type just yet. It’s almost 😅 like 👍 an Astro Sonic. I sure like 👍 your RPM Calculator setup there. I don’t know if the cartridge is magnetic 🧲. I like 👍 that motorboard. It even has a fan. Your friend, Jeff.

Yes! I absolutely can't stand that "bleached white" asthetic, great way to put it! If you go look at modern camp trailers it's the same thing... Looks like some modern apartment inside, not a nice relaxing back to nature "woody" vibe.

You are loosing some bass due to going past 1/3rd on the volume control as the loudness contour gets lessened around that point. If the tuner was working top notch, there would probably be more bass as you wouldn't need to go wide open on the volume. Interesting on the resistors as I've never seen them fail like that in operation, just normally drift upwards. I bet if you connected an old late 80s Delco car stereo to those speakers it would be shaking the ground with bass! I built a set of speakers using drivers from an old RCA tube console which are 15x9 and the bass they can put out is insane with lower wattage stuff.

ESD180, if that console was mine or whoever owned it wanted stereo FM I'd put an inexpensive FM tuners through an aux input or tape input if it had one. No way would I let my records, or records belongings to anyone I cared about, get played in that record changer!

@@ostrich67 , the commonest record changers I saw in tube-type consoles were Motorola, but some had Voice of Music or Collaro record changers. BSR and Garrard came later, mostly in solid-state consoles; an improvement in terms of lighter tonearm and lower tracking force, but still pretty crummy. Although there are a bunch of audiophiles who have the hots for the Garrard 301 idler drive turntable, the only modern Garrard turntable I ever saw that was worth a darn was a model we sold in the audio store I was working in in the early eighties that was direct drive and fully automatic and actually pretty nicely built, but sourced from somewhere in Japan. At that point Garrard was probably just a name and not the same company at all.

Take some fine grit sandpaper (420 grit works well) and lightly rub the edge of that rubber wheel with it. The surface of the rubber tends to get glazed. I tried it on an old phono I had and it works great.

The reason why it took it a little bit is because the tubes need to warm up before you hear anything. We are so used to turning something on and there it is. Back then the tubes had to warm up when you turned it on.
