Join Graeme as he goes magnet fishing for the first time! He heads to a ww2 machine gun post. In this film Graeme jumps on an old bicycle to do a bit of waterway exploring using a powerful magnet on a rope. He aims to locate some military munitions or anything that might have been dumped off the bridges many years ago. He makes base camp on a WW2 machine gun post, climbing up onto the roof and enjoying a complete cookup with a great view. It’s not something you get to do every day, so check the film out to see how he gets on.

Hi Graeme, you've taken me back fifty odd years, as a teenager used to fish along the Basingstoke canal and Tundry pond. Caught a 17lb pike by the laurels up by the bridge that split the pond in two. Used to have to keep an eye out for the farmer/gatekeeper who would confiscate our fishing gear and then my dad used to go and get it back. Used to stop off at either the Cheques pub or think it was the Black Horse or Black Prince in Crookham Village for a pint of two. (We looked older then we were). Tewseldown was like our back yard and we would go there most days in the summer holidays. I belonged to Fleet and Crookham Athletics club and would run around the race course. Oh happy free days. Thanks for stirring up the old grey matter.

Amazed anyone would even know I was telling the truth,so thanks for posting the comment. It was the Chequers Pub. we also used the Barley Mow pub down at Dogmersfield ,going there on our bikes and ordering halves of mild and bitter ,usually one orders while the others stayed outside. Still of school age naturally.

Hi Graeme, interesting one, I tried this magnet fishing and like you to no avail, still it was fun, I looked up about the pillboxes and wondered why they infact, call theem pillboxes and came up with this? Pillboxes are concrete dug-in guard posts, normally equipped with loopholes through which to fire weapons. The originally jocular name arose from their perceived similarity to the cylindrical and hexagonal boxes in which medical pills were once sold. They are in effect a trench firing step hardened to protect against small-arms fire and grenades and raised to improve the field of fire. Pillboxes are often camouflaged in order to conceal their location and to maximize the element of surprise. They may be part of a trench system, form an interlocking line of defence with other pillboxes by providing covering fire to each other (defence in depth), or they may be placed to guard strategic structures such as bridges and jetties. I guessed it had something to do with the old poxes for pills as we do not really use that word anymore, rather medication so interesting. Congrats on getting the magnet back by the way. Note to self infuture, "do not attempt to connect your magnet to your bicycle as they often take a hell of a yank to get them off again, amazed you got your off lol. well done.

You post a video on magnet fishing with no thrilling find, just cycling up a canal, exploring a Pill Box and having a cook up and expect the likes of me to find it entertaining? Of course I found it entertaining from start to finish. I do metal detecting with more disappointment than decent finds but have learnt perseverance pays off occasionally (more can ring pulls than anything else but the odd coin dating back to 16-1700). I think you went back to your childhood which it seems we tend do as we get older and parts of you don't work as well as they used to. Age though is just a number I still climb the odd tree and cook up sausages and jacket potato on an open fire. Thanks for posting I don't feel l am on my own anymore.
