MIT engineers have fabricated a new elastic material coated with microscopic, hairlike structures that tilt in response to a magnetic field. (Learn more about these structures: bit.ly/1y2E8SX)
Depending on the field's orientation, the microhairs can tilt to form a path through which fluid can flow; the material can even direct water upward, against gravity.

MIT was doing a robotic snake at some stage; it was still in the development stage but the video showed it climbing a tree - with a bit of difficulty. Real snakes in nature have scales which can open and allow the snake to climb a vertical wall. A nice application of the robotic snake would be if it could be used as a robotic hose. Applications could be firefighting where a stackable set of pipes could autonomously climb around the sides of buildings and and pump the firefighting material to the correct . Or on a larger scale, be a tube to slide in to escape from. Having a variable friction surface like this could be combined with this project maybe?

Oh my god, that is just awesome. Fluid and light manipulation. Have we not seen this kind of feat in movies and fiction books? Now coming into really its just awesome. Please keep up the good work! I just subscribed to your channel.

This looks almost no different to capillary action, and that's a natural thing.

Fernando Alemán I've been controlling capillary action for years as plumbers do it to solder copper pipe.

Fernando Alemán You don't know what you're talking about. To solder pipe you use solder, flux, a fitting and heat it up to seal the gaps/joint. This can all be done just by applying the solder at the bottom of a vertical fitting. The solder travels up inside the fitting providing you have your heat in the right place. This is capillary action. This is plumbing knowledge 101, everyone who wants their qualification in City & Guilds has to know this. It's our business to control the flow of fluids, we even use methods to stop capillary action like the groove under window sills.

slightlytwistedagain "Capillary action is the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, and in opposition to, external forces like gravity" Those narrow spaces are called 'capilares' in Spanish (couldn't find an accurate translation in English), and that word is coming from the Latin 'hair' la.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capillamentum So, as I was saying, size matters for having this effect. If plumbers can modify the capillary effect in the mcropipes they use, good for them! They should patent it!

Speaking as an engineer, I would have to wonder what the anticipated cost per square-foot of this material is. This could unfortunately be another invention whose practical and ubiquitous application is hamstrung by its lack of cost-effectiveness in mass production.

Well, it depends what you use it for. Defy, not for a window as they claim. But there's a lot of research on microfluidics, specially for micro chips that can analyze a blood sample, urine, etc. Those devices are expensive now and this technology can be very useful for those. Added value.

It is not "an invention"; it is a man-made application of nature known as capillary effect.

capillary action. is the correct term for it. this also needs cohesion to work. and surface tension... and viscosity. while the main principle of water that allows this to happen is capillary action you need a lot more.

Here is your propulsion system for graphene in flight, except using three atom transistors. This could also be an awesome projection system like R2D2, camera focusing and multi zoom solutions, or laser death for mosquito's, little bastards. It actually would make a great material to wear which could create electricity.😊😊😊

Interesting. Is there any information on human hair being magnetic by natural occurrence? Because I thought that's what this video was about. If so, what could be the cause of it? After all, you guys are supposed to be scientists. This is the famous MIT in the MIT part, correct?
