Magnetic sand in an hourglass is a nice touch. But what happens if I use a way too large magnet near it? Can I change time? Let's find out!

I voted "no" because I didn't expect any slowdowns. Just because the sand has stronger downpull force, the amount that can flow through the narrow neck doesn't change. Gravity was enough to help it downpour, adding a magnet shouldn't make it go faster. But the clogging was unexpected, though it makes sense, since even simple compression would clog up the sand.

Yep, they avoid induced magnetism in the top with the included, small magnet. They also have to use a somewhat weak magnet for people's safety... Otherwise a lot of people would smash the glass at some point by putting the hourglass with the sand in the bottom half over the magnetic base... Thanks for watching, Indra!

I had an opportunity (and stupidity) once to bring a plastic container with some iron dust right near the MRI scanner. It formed elongated structures that were hanging sideways in the air (but obviously pushing with one end against the side that is facing the scanner). It looked similar to what you see in the video but more so. One could say that the dust was all spikes and no base.

I thought that the time would speed up with the magnet, especially with a stronger magnet. Free iron filings definitely would speed up towards a magnet, as would most things made out of iron. In fact, I have noticed a similarity between this magnetic acceleration and the gravitational acceleration of a falling object. I thought that this magnetic acceleration that occurs with all paramagnetic objects, but is especially prominent with ferromagnetic objects would lead to a faster time in the hourglass. Evidently not.

Some car suspensions use this metering effect with ferro-fluids that is part of the hydraulic fluid inside. Then a variable solenoid magnet controls that, so then the rate which it dampens can freely adjusted to the desired amount. Kind of a clever setup for what it is.
