Welcome back Dave, it’s good to see you again! You’re one of my favorites here on KZfaq. I emailed you several years ago about the economical rolling mill and greatly appreciated your generous and honest reply. I was eventually able to purchase one of Pepetools rolling mill and absolutely love it! I wish you continued success and look forward to seeing you again!

Hi there from the USA! I bought a magnetic finisher recently too. I have a suggestion for you (and anyone reading this comment!), in case you make a follow up video...let people know that they need to have a very strong, small magnet on hand to hold over each piece that they pull out of the solution, to get a hold of the tiny pins that could be still hiding in the jewelry piece (that chain bracelet you had especially!). Otherwise you could be rinsing them down the drain! These little pins are costly, so you don't want to lose them! Also, a video with how to clean the pins when emptying and putting in fresh polishing solution would be helpful. I have heard that Coca-Cola works great, but I haven't tried it yet. I just use Dawn dish soap. I strained the old fluid with steel pins through a kitchen strainer that I lined with a coffee filter to keep them from slipping through the metal strainer. It's a great piece of equipment! And your chains are very cool btw! Peace!

Yes those pins get everywhere !. and with my chainmail bracelets, there's always a pin you don't find (until later). So yes I use a neodymium magnet to check the pieces now. As for cleaning, its just a matter of changing the water. But I often add some of the cutting powder and run the polisher for an hour before giving it a good rinse until the water runs clear. Thanks for watching and for contributing. Dave

Glad it was helpful! Its great, but magnetic polisher do come at a premium. The speed, does come at a price. Tumblers like the Lortone 3A are a great alternative if you're on a tighter budget. See link. hope this helps. Dave kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r752pZmjsbXcnac.html

Hey Dave What an impressive piece of equipment, but quick question: will polishing your pieces in the Polimag work harden them like a barrel tumbler?
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 4 жыл бұрын
I've often wondered this. I don't think the effect is as noticeable with the Polimag. For one, the pins are much smaller than the steel shot used in the tumbler. So there's not the same "impact" from the shot being lifted and dropped. Second is simply the time. Typically I will polish an item for 1/2 hour or so. Which isn't really long enough to have any effect. Dave.

Hi there! What a great video! I have been struggling with the decision to purchase a magnetic finishing machine, and you made is easy! Thank you! Couple of questions … 1. What is the cutting powder you are using? 2. What is the liquid finisher you are using or you like the best?
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 2 жыл бұрын
Usually you use liquid polish specially formulated for magnetic polishing machines. The powdered soap and cutting powder I was using here, is designed for barrelling machines. Either sparks fine, The main purpose is to act as a lubricant for the pins. Avoid dish soap though, as it can be too foamy. Us proper finishing liquid if you can get it, its well worth it. Dave

This thing looks fantastic.. I make parts purely out of titanium, im curious what kind of finish this would leave? If I could get something even remotely close to a mirror polish, this would save me so much time vs using the buffing wheel..
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 3 жыл бұрын
Titanium? I haven't tried that. Obviously tougher than silver or gold, so may need a little longer to get the finish you want, but I don't see why not. There are also a lot of powders you can buy for polishing stones etc with various levels of abrasiveness. As shown I sometimes use a small spoonful of cutting powder (which I think is probably pumice), to give it some extra bite with heavily oxidised items. Hope this helps. Dave

What are the tumblers like with castings? Of course you’ll need to do an initial clean up of sprues and imperfections. But how will the magnetic polisher cope with something sanded up to say 400 grit? Haven’t seen a video using the tumbler for castings yet.. Cheers!
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 2 жыл бұрын
Magnetic polishers can only use steel pins (ie magnetic). So really more for final polishing. With rough castings you really need something more abrasive. Usually ceramic chips and abrasive media, which need a moving barrel either in a rotary tumbler, or a larger vibratory machine. See the vid here, which may help make sense. Not that I can tell. I did experiment with different shapes when i bought it. If anything, with the square tub (the one I tried) I did once find an item just sat in the corner and not moving. Which the round tub avoids. Dave.

...to keep that beautiful shine of jewelry I bought a magnetic tumbler but my problem comes when I put my jewelry in a magnetic tumbler, after the cleaning procedure my jewelry loses its final shine that is my jewelry is like matte. So, has no final high shine I can't stand for sale Please tell me some suggestion or some advice to polish my jewelry in this machine without losing the final shine ????? Thank you a lot

If you're getting a matt finish,then thats because its been in the pins for too long. Slower speed, shorter time (5 minutes), clean water, and good quality polishing liquid. Dave

What size of steel pins do you use and what speed do you normaly use? I have a Magnetic Tumbler KT 185 with 0,5x5,0mm pins and it runs with 2.000rpm (a least that what they say). I find the surface to be almost like a orange. I have ordered 0,3x5,0mm pins but will that help?
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the slightly orange peen texture, is down to two things. too fast - the pins are bashing into the surface and creating tiny dents, giving a micro hammers finish. Secondly you are leaving the items in too long, obviously the longer they are in, the more you will see this texturing effect. for me, 10 to 20 minutes is usually enough. for chains and jump rings, the results are great. But with flat polished surfaces, then you may notice this slight matte texture. In such cases, the magnetic polisher should be considered as a pre polish to clean and burnish the hard to reach spots. A mop and rouge should be used on prominent flat spots for that perfect mirror shine. Dave

What is the benefit of going in reverse or alternating the direction of the pins?
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk Жыл бұрын
It moves the pice around, a larger heavier item may just sit in one position and hence get more polished on one side. so the constant slowing down and reversing helps the pieces to move around ensuring you are polishing it from all possible angles. Dave.

Thank you for your videos. Can you please suggest how to polish jewelry after casting? I have little detailed areas on the jewelry that I can not get into.
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 2 жыл бұрын
Finishing a rough casting is difficult. You really need to sand down the surface smooth before you can start polishing. This can be a lot of hard work. Commercially this is done with ceramic media in a tumbler, to smooth the surface first. Check out my video below. Dave kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrp-qLJlrN-YcYU.html

I'm sorry Dave, I've been a subscriber of yours for a long time, and I am sick of Pepe Tools, they find anyone who starts showing a growing sub list and basically turns them into pepe adverts, the same thing has happened with Gomeow, He used to make good vids based on things he'd made, now pepe tools flashed their wallet at him and an endless stream of free stuff practically every video he now produces is to promote at pepe product, I looked at the price of the magnetic polisher you're promoting, £827.00 and no doubt a hefty shipping fee to add on !! It may make sense if you run a business to buy one BUT if you run a business you wouldn't necessarily be watching your videos! as it's more likely to be people like me who are hobbyists looking to improve our skills, (as I've done with a few of your vids, I'm actually wearing the copper Byzantine chain you used In your vid, after watching it several times lol) I understand the temptation to accept pepe's sponsorship and for some it's a necessity but I just had to say this NOT as a dig at you or others but at the likes of pepe tools who basically ruin any decent channel and they're ability to make original videos/pieces because they are obligated to make something that incorporates whatever free product pepe tools wants them to promote! RANT OVER lol, Thank you for the many past videos I've enjoyed from you and wish you success in your business.

A little harsh perhaps but if may respond intelligently… I have had the polimag for over a year and I have indeed been a little hesitant as I appreciate that it is a costly item (although good value). Hence why in the video I do repeatedly state that this is a “considered” purchase. But you should note that on my channel I show the full spectrum of tools from a simple video on emery paper to a computer controlled Pulse welder. Yes, I appreciate that most of my audience are probably hobbyists. But that’s kind of my point. My purpose is to show the average user what these things are and how they work. I can't afford a Lamborghini, but I do enjoy looking at them in the showroom. Whether you buy any of these tools or not is entirely up to you, but at least you are able to make a more informed decision. How else would you know what a mag polisher is? My purpose is to educate and inform. It is also worth mentioning that my whole channel started with a tool review (Maun parallel pliers) and I’ve never been paid for a video (although I do get to keep ‘some’ of the tools). For many years I worked with Cooksongold to demonstrate various tools from almost all major brands. This is where my channel arose and the millions of viewers - From tool reviews . You seldom get instructions with anything so people wanted to know how exactly how things are used and what they do. So over the years I have tried to cover everything, as I say from emery paper to a welder. It is only very recently that I have made project videos such as the byzantine. I can also say that my biggest ever video with over ¾ million views is the Dremel 300 vid - Which is purely a product review. So my audience was built on tool demos, and continues to do so. To answer a similar previous criticism (genuinely only 1 such criticism ever). I must explain that the tools you see here are only the ones which I actually use and am happy to show. There are many tools (and companies) that I will not endorse. I work closely with many companies around the world to help design and test new products. I will give feedback privately to the companies. But you (the audience) don’t get to see them, unless I can hand on heart recommend them. I have tested prototype tools which you will never see. Consider this….I was very recently offered an “entire” workshop. No exaggeration. benches, tools, lighting, electric rolling mills …absolutely everything, worth thousands!. Now…I am just a single guy with a little market stall and a workshop in my garden. For me it was like being offered a lottery win. BUT…I turned it down. Why? because as I don’t agree with the morals and conduct of ‘that’ particular company. To turn down a “complete workshop” full of free tools, was a very difficult decision. But at the end of the day, it is my honesty and integrity which I value above all else. In my case, I didn’t sell out. But consider, what you would have done? Dave
