This is a great breakdown! I am a a huge proponent of better understanding the brain. Traumatic brain injuries are the one injury / disease that we can likely eventually cure if we continue to gain more and more understanding. MEG is one - very productive - way of gaining that insight!

Seriously though, this summer I'm doing research in the Neuroscience department of Stony Brook University (I'm 16) and the chair of the department and her husband both work their. She does electrophysiology (looking at the brains electricity) and he does molecular biology. According to him, all she does is "squiggles" and according to her, all he does is "blobs"

Pretty good video, but it's missing a hook. I went through most of the video thinking "why do I care about this?" If you restructure the video to start with the monkey with the mechanical arm, or even Luke's mechanical arm and ask a question like "How can we make this a reality?" you get the audience much more interested.

Good video, but a few of the points are a little off. MEG is definitely not superior to fMRI imaging in either temporal or spatial resolution. The only reason for the widespread use of MEG is because compared to higher resolution techniques, it is dirt cheap and requires much less sophisticated equipment. MEG's actually give very poor spatial resolution. The readout you get from MEGs is the cumulative waveforms of thousands of neurons, which you then need to break apart with fourier decompositions. The biggest downfall of MEG is that you can only see the outer layers of the cortex, and get very little signal from the deeper parts of the brain. (Where there is a lot of interesting things happening). As you touched upon in your video, implanted electrodes (will give you much better resolution (and it gets even better with tetrodes and/or microdrives). One misconception that you have (that is very common) is that neurons do not communicate with each other using electrical signals (with the exception of a very small subset that actually have electrical synapses). Within each neuron, yes, there is an electrical signal (which starts graded at the soma, and an action potential down the axon). However, once the terminals are reached, the electrical signal is transduced to a chemical one with the release of neurotransmitters across the chemical synapse between neurons.

you are not 100 right in this. I work for company what makes MEG machines. ( i make squids for it) and our machine cost 2 000 000 euros. Its starting to be old tech and needs so much shit around it and to produce it. Also you need so much testing. Helium and a antimagnetic room. This all adds even more to the price. We already have better squids that can measure in room temperature but it still has some proplems and they are not in use. Meanwhile CT scan machine cost have come down and a lot.
@love_otter
@love_otter 9 жыл бұрын
So the SQUIDs are arranged into a sort of helmet, I assume, which is placed on the person's head. And that helmet is -270 degrees Celsius? How is the person being examined shielded from the extreme cold of the SQUIDs?
@AltShiftX
@AltShiftX 9 жыл бұрын
love_otter There's a vacuum to insulate between the cooled inner bit of the helmet and the outer bit that touches the person's head. Probably should have mentioned in the vid..
