In my case the gas and oil usage was noted weekly by myself as part of the plant running cost scheme over a period of years so any difference would be down to variation in the outside ambient temperature? The softer valves and guides needed lead ( better yet graphite) for lubrication due to friction. In addition when they refined gas the octane ratings were much lower (meaning less control over combustion causing pre-detonation- thus the "pinging"). The lead allowed more control over engine timing. Octane= controlled burning of gas under pressure. The higher the octane, the slower it burns and ignition timing can be regulated. Higher the octane= the more you advance timing away from 0 degrees before top dead center. R+M/0 method.

There may be some some effects on fuel as well - but as far as I know, there is no evidence it improves fuel economy.
