@@PreservationEnthusiast There's a long history of Magnus seeing his opponent mistakenly lose a bunch of time online and he'll even it up. You can complain about aspects of his sportsmanship such as often showing up late but in this regard he's usually extremely sporting.

@aleksdobrev1486 4 ай бұрын
@@FreethinkingSecularistMagnus is probably the greatest chess player ever, however I definitely wouldn’t say that Bobby was a bad sportsman.. I mean it was him that arranged the biggest possible price fund and best possible conditions as well. That is one of the reasons why Spassky liked Bobby very much.
@FreethinkingSecularist
@FreethinkingSecularist 4 ай бұрын
@aleksdobrev1486 Fischer's demands for special treatment during chess tournaments, such as at the World Championship in 1972, exemplify traits often associated with poor sportsmanship. He insisted that the organizers meet a list of conditions, including increasing the prize fund, changing the lighting, providing a new chessboard, and even removing the first rows of chairs. Furthermore, he demanded the removal of cameras and to have the games moved to a back room, leading to him not showing up for the second game until his conditions were met. These actions suggest a lack of regard for the norms and fairness in competition, which are central to the concept of good sportsmanship.

Just my two cents, this guy clearly tried to goad Magnus into playing out of turn. I say that because if you watch the way the guy "tries to stop the clock", he just caresses it. You can feel it click down. He waited for Magnus to play out of turn and when he realized Magnus wasn't going to play, he "suddenly saw his clock go almost to zero". No way you could convince me otherwise.

Magnus Carlsen's apology is like a naughty child feeling guilty and then admitting to being naughty by saying they didn't do it. Carlsen did not break the rules of chess or violate tournament regulations. However, anybody who has ever played blitz or rapid competitively, knows that you keep your eye on the clock as part of your time management. When your clock has been running for a while - for instance when you are thinking for 20 seconds or more and you have less than 2 minutes on the clock, regardless of increment, you check your clock - it takes a split second, you do it as second nature - moving only your eyes without thinking or even being aware of doing it. Of course when you're in serious time trouble you are constantly aware of your time, trying to make sure you don't lose on time. Carlsen's apology is an admission and yet another little piece of evidence that he isn't as moral as he wants to portray himself. He's a great chess player, but I'm gradually losing my respect for him as person.
