I went to Dubai and we decided the first game we should see was on Friday. Friday was game six. Magnus signed my board after at 1 o clock in the morning. Truly a generational player. Absolutely dumbfounded.....

Magnus mental fortitude is what really sets him apart. He’s willing and able to play long match after long match; and keeps his composure even in borderline lost positions after hours of play

I swear that Magnus-Fabi match is so underrated. Ppl remember that it had 12 draws, but not HOW they were drawn. Half of those draws are 10 times more interesting than any decisive game in 2021 (beside game 6). Game 1 game 6 game 10 were some of the most complicated games I've ever seen

I feel sorry for Caruana. He is brilliant (well, at least at classical) but he'll probably never be world champion just because Carlsen is too good. The guy even reached the 3rd highest rating ever, just behind Carlsen and Kasparov, but he's just not as good as Magnus. I think he could go down as one of the best to never actually become the best of his time.

It's really cool seeing this happen. When I was just a kid on my grade school chess team, everyone talked about Bobby Fischer. And I was upset I wasn't around during his time.. Now Magnum Magnus come out, guns blazing and I get to see it. I feel like the biggest nerd ever for the words that just came out my mouth... But hey.. This is really interesting to me

I have an ok-ok story. A little context first, I am from India and Vishy is a literal god here. Everyone knows who he is here. So when he was beaten back in 2013, I was in 3rd or 4th grade and at the time our school used to give us these List of Current affairs for ever month. And Bamg right there the biggest one was Vishy lost to some Norwegian young dude named Magnus Carlsen. These current affairs lists-thingies were marked under the subject of general knowledge and would be graded. When the question paper came it had this news as a question like who beat vishy. Everyone wrote Magnus. Now the teacher who made these lists and gave to us like a month back made a spelling error and printed Magnus CARLSON. With an O. So everyone wrote it with an O. The not-so-everybody smart kids wrote it with an E. And there was this huge uproar of which one was correct. Parents argued with teachers. It was a 1 mark question in a 10 mark paper. HUGE DEAL for the parents who wanted their kids to score a 10. Ended with the teacher giving everyone a mark for that question.

"Magnus doing Magnus things" is probably the most descriptive phrase of chess in our era. There are many great players playing today, Ian being one of them, but then you got this dude that looks at the engine evaluation screaming "Drawww!!" and goes "Sober up Stockfish, I'm winning this".

Karjakin drawing a game while -8 on Stockfish was amazing. An unholy fortress, Magnus kept pushing but Karjakin kept holding by some miracle. Karjakin even managed a sweaty stalemate in rapid!

@@matthewtalukdar3712 Game 4. Modern Stockfish only sees at -2 now (it was -8 at the time), but it's still an impenetrable fortress. Game 2 of play-offs is the stalemate game. I will also mention game 3, another miracle escape by Karjakin with a piece down.

He was world number one back in Jan 2010.

The interesting thing is, he could have maybe won his first title in 2012 but he withdrew from the candidates tournament because he didn't like the format. It was a four game bracket with faster time control tiebreaks and Magnus thought it was too easy to draw the classical games and determine the winner in the rapid and blitz. In 2013, FIDE adopted the double round robin for the first time in something like 50 years. Magnus played, came perilously close to losing but managed to hang on, and the rest is history.

Sweet video. In the Fabi match, game 8 really stood out as Magnus hanging by a thread against insane engine prep, and game 12 was notable when Carlsen had clear advantage but offered a draw. Appreciate that you had to pick and choose, though, and that game 6 was really a head scratcher. Thanks for the work in all this analysis!

Fantastic idea, I like it very much. But why stop on only 6x winners, why not cover all World Champions even if they hold it 'just' a year. No one has done it before or atleast I haven't seen anything similar. It can definitely be done in one year and it would be awesome to watch.

@@Nicks721 Lasker was an undisputed 6 time champ and reigned for 27 years (this was pre-FIDE). Kasparov and Karpov are also six times champs, though Kasparov only won 4 undisputed titles and Karpov only had 3. The others came during the era of FIDE and Garry's PCA, so the titles were split. Magnus is currently tied with Botvinnik for second most undisputed championships with 5, although Botvinnik never actually won a world championship match as world champ. He won the tournament to declare a world champ after Alekhine's death, drew Bronstein in his first defense, drew Smyslov in his second defense, then lost to Smyslov, defeated Smyslov as challenger in a rematch, lost to Tal, defeated Tal as challenger in a rematch then lost to Petrosian.

It's so unfortunate that that 6th Carlsen-Nepo game, which was a brilliant game regardless of loss, seemed to break down Nepo. He's definitely a worthy opponent when he's on his game and I was hoping to see more but he blundered it away. Carlsen seems to be the GOAT. Can't wait to see the next challenger. Maybe Firouzja (sry for spelling). He's been strong lately.

Nepo is a remarkable player but when you are a red-hot dynamic fast playing attacking sensation and you struggle to get it going, it's only natural your confidence is sapped against the literal chess embodiment of a boa constrictor. If you can't put him on the back foot, Magnus will grind you down and expose you. It's that simple.

@@blue-pi2kt good boa analogy about magnus' style but I think Carlsen winning had far more to do with Nepo losing. All was well up to and through game 6 and it all fell apart after that. Seems that people's points about Nepo going on tilt (for lack of better word) are true. There have been blunders in WC's but not like this or that many, you know? EDIT - I suppose I'm agreeing with you mostly. Those blunders were just something else.

Anand lost to magnus and semi retired, karjakin lost to magnus and lost a lot of places in the rankings, caruana lost to magnus and is down like 50 elo points and 3/4 places in the top50, im sure its just coincidence but, its also interesting to see.

@@None-zv2qk we'll see. A lot of people liked Nepo's chances because he was one of the few that was not afraid of Magnus. I think he is now. Now who isn't afraid of Magnus? Firouzja isn't. I don't think Fabi is. Duda isn't. Rapport isn't. Luckily, most of those guys have qualified for the Candidate's. I predict that Carlsen won't lose the world championship to anyone roughly his age or older.

Yes. I've observed that as well. Fabi even said when he's in the commentary that the match took a toll a lot on you mentally. There were times where things would just hunt them down reminding them the "what ifs" of the game

@@Kodaira023 relatively speaking. No one outside of probably his own team world give him over 50% chance. I think Ben Finegold said he would win the match 35-40% of the time. That's much higher than the rating difference would imply. Probably higher odds than other candidates during the last one outside of maybe Fabi or Ding

I thought this championship would be closer. Ian had been playing really well leading up to it and Magnus was showing just the smallest signs of being human. That is you can't be best forever. He was losing the odd game to some really strong players and he didn't quite seem on top of his game. To Magnus's credit he plays a lot but he didn't win some high profile tournaments. I wonder if he was using all these earlier games to give Ian a false sense of bravado and then Magnus returned to his rock solid and amazing style of play to knock Ian out of his zone. Game 6 was unbelievable that Magnus was confident to play 2 rooks against the queen and find a way to win after 8 hours. Incredible!!!

Awesome video, i was wondering if you would ever make a deep dive on who is the goat in chess by showing the lenghts of dominance and arguments on why those certain players are debated to be the goat (like fischer, kasparov, magnus, and so on). would be an interesting video and show the development and the ability's between the best players on each respected era

I think without a doubt Game 6 of 2021 was Magnus AND Ian’s finest game ever. The best of the best moves, slow, raw, brutal but also incredibly artistic with how both players navigated their pieces for a slight advantage. Its not my favourite game of all times but it is by far the most impressive game of both of their careers! A true Magnus Opus pun intended
