Endgame wizardry has always been to me, the most fascinating and impressive aspect of GM chess. Amateurs like myself can bust out cool sacrifices every once in a while, but orchestrating a ~30 move plan that culminates in “Opponent to move and lose” is pure chess dominance.

Yet every GM has achieved that goal without being able to do just that. It is fascinating, and it looks like pure sorcery when Carlsen does it. It is also an impractical skill to develop as a means of getting a GM title - so don't attempt it, Levy!

@Yz Fool Whatever on earth are you talking about? Triangulation and zugzwang (you move, you lose) make up roughly 20% of endgame theory. Saying that it is impractical and unnecessary for GMs is like saying a bird doesn't need its legs cause it has wings

(In regards to 13:42 ) Not a firefighter but when it comes to forest fire mitigation they actually do "fight fire with fire" in the form of "controlled burns." Basically they find problem excess wood and foliage that can cause a fire to spread uncontrollably and burn it on their own terms :)

@@DavidEcclestonSmith Pinworthy? As in "pin of shame" or "pin of shared knowledge" ? Doing controlled burns in order to deplete the fuel source (burn stuff so the fire has no way to spread) is a very real and effective thing.

There are thousands of such games. I remember Zusha Polgar and some indian GM yawning while comenting a "dead drawn" game (the 6th game) in the Anand carlsen match 2013. All the time they were making the point of how easily Anand would achieve the draw...Suddenly, some strange moves from Magnus, and soon Anand lost. My favorite endgame of Carlsen is his ridiculous save against Kramnik in the London Classic 2010. I remember reading Carlsen describing how he waited for Kramnik to return to the board to make his move and making sure he sighed when playing into a fork as if he had given up the game because he saw the resulting endgame, while both winning for Kramnik and looking easy, was in practice hard to win and he wanted Kramnik to play his move as fast as possible without thinking to much about it. Kramnik recently talked about it and it was obvious it is one of those games that still haunts him to this very day.

Correction to 15:43. Tablebase evaluates the position as winning, with a depth to zeroing of 78 halfmoves after which a capture happens and then it's a mate in 11. 50 move rule requires total of 100 halfmoves so there is no draw here with perfect play

I caught the latter part of Carlsen-Firouzja live online and the chat was rife with armchair GMs reading off Stockfish lines and saying it was absolutely a draw, no way it could be anything else, right up until the moment the evaluation jumped to +56 or whatever -- and then saying Firouzja "blundered" as if they would have even made it to an endgame against Carlsen. I've always heard people rave about Carlsen's ability to create practical chances in seemingly dead-drawn endgames, and it was cool to watch it happen (though as I recall the fact Firouzja was in severe zeitnot may have had _something_ to do with it as well). I would never in 100 years have thought of returning the king to e5 but it's really the only move that gives black the opportunity to err.

It's interesting to watch because Magnus makes everything so COMPLICATED and that's probably what constitutes the 'Magnus effect' and why the best GM's 'blunders' against him. It's like he turns up the heat and raises the chess difficulty until they make a mistake.

@@locktherocka252 Agad goes deeper but Gotham explains the good principles of chess while analyzing which actually helps my chess. For example, in this video Gotham advises to not hang rooks even when there are no rooks on the board. Joking aside, Levy does teach a lot of good principles. Like danger levels, Check capture attack, when to trade, pawn structures, avoiding blunders etc which helped me climb from 700 to 1400 by helping my mid game.

Immediately after watching this I got inspired and won a blitz game against a slightly higher rated opponent in 93 moves. According to Lichess's analysis engine, the endgame started on move 27 with opposite colored bishops and a roughly equal position

Speaking as a firefighter you do indeed fight fire with fire. But only if you're a professional dealing with forest fires. I wouldn't recommend it for your house. Examples of this include controlled burns and backburning. In chess analogies a controlled burn would be making a pawn break and trading some bishops before your opponent is able to close the center in an advantageous way. And backburning is when you're being pawn stormed so you sacrifice a piece right in front of your king to double up your opponents pawn structure. Controlled burning is setting something on fire before it catches on fire by itself. And backburning is setting small fires in the path of a big fire, because of quirks in how big fires behave this can have the effect of making it burn itself out *if you know what you're doing,* even though it seems like a bad idea at first glance.

Absolutely great video and effort by Levy as always, but i also would like to give a honourable mention to Magnus's game vs Jobava at the World Blitz 2019. Understandable that it was a blitz game so it any win in classical will be a more convincing content material corresponding to the title, but Magnus definitely showed his dominance in endgames especially at the highest level of competence. Lastly, wishing whoever who reads this message the best in whatever you do and appreciate this community Levy brought us.

In the game Carlsen vs Vallejo, interestingly enough, Carlsen called the arbiter and asked him about the rules - he was not sure if he has only 50 moves or if there are some exception in certain position like R+B vs B+N (There used to be in the past, now there are not).

funny enough you do actually fight fire with fire. to prevent wildfires from growing or moving in certain directions firefighters will do "controlled burns" which is where u quite literally burn a specific section of land, so that when the nearby wildfire reaches it hopefully if everything goes right it just moves along the side of the area u burned and not into it. so in terms of fighting wildfires, you actually can do it with fire, not so much regular house or business fires though as those are much quicker and based usually around if there's a good sprinkler system or other preventative measure and not so much an active counter measure like this

at 28:22 is there bishop g4? (bg4, bb7, f4, bxa6, bd7, (white king can attack bishop and force draw with d6, be8, king e7, etc.) king e4, king g4, and I think black is winning, or there's bishop b7 instead of king e4 but I don't think that works edit - well, I was wrong, but that was mostly the line after bishop g4, winning for white is bishop b7 bishop g2, or if you play king g3 to stop bishop g2, white gets two past pawns that win. I plugged the position into an engine to see that
