The 2021 FIDE World Cup is a 206-player knockout taking place in Krasnaya Polyana, near Sochi, Russia from July 12 to August 6. The prize fund is almost $1.9m, with $110,000 for the winner, while the finalists also qualify for the 2022 Candidates Tournament. The top 50 players, who include world nos 1 and 2 Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, are seeded directly into Round 2.
Each match consists of two classical games where the players have 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment from move 1. If tied, a playoff will be held on the 3rd day. There are two 25+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 10+10 games, then two 5+3, and finally an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers are allowed until after move 30. Official website: worldcup.fide.com

At first I was a bit sad to not see Carlsen fight for 1st place-- but then, him slaughtering Fedoseev back-to-back just reminded me that he's still a godlike player beyond normal comprehension.

@@John_II More interesting is the fact that in the classical time control Magnus won 8 games and had 6 draws whereas Duda won 5 games and had 9 draws, just telling who the Champ is. Thank you for your excellent coverage of the WC, Antonio! As a fan of all of your sagas, I must say that I enjoy the format you used for Morphy's or Capablanca's. As a viewer, you feel like you are travelling in time and all over the world with these amazing players and you sort of get to know them better both as chess masters and persons through the stories that you share with us in each video. So I'd very much enjoy for future sagas to keep ongoing on that fashion, even if there are pauses here and there due to the modern tourneys going on. Keep up the good work, greetings from a Venezuelan. :)

I love long sagas. I know it's tough for you preparing it all, especially in between all the chess being played, but there's something epic about following it over such a period of time. I enjoyed going back to watch all of your Fischer and Capablanca videos, and loved how you can drop little bits of story in there rather than try to push it all through at once. You strike me as the type of KZfaqr who would want to do these players - and yourself - justice by doing them to the best of your ability, and ensuring the quality is there. Stories are often best when told slowly.

Drinking game. Every time Agadmator says “what do you do now” drink!! It’s halfway through the video and I’m hammered.

Hey, Agad! long time fan of ur channel. Dunno if the short sagas are a good idea. I kinda like knowing more about the old players. I don´t have that much time to spend in learning chess (actually, sinse i´m in the last semester of my college i have no time) and ur sagas really teach me alot. But, whatever u do i´ll be here to get my fair share of "hello, everyone!" O/

Magnus intentionally passing up a quick checkmate opportunity so he can take his time and just annihilate his opponent slowly instead is just the ultimate disrespect

Omfg I just saw an ad popup with him in it, another thumbnail with him in it, and then the next second I see Carlsen cosplaying as the dude. The amount of ASMR right now is at levels no one even previously imagined was possible. I'm gonna go smoke some ganga and paint clouds.
