ಹಿಂದೂಗಳ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಹಬ್ಬಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದಾದ. ಈ ಹಬ್ಬವನ್ನು ಮಾಘ ಮಾಸದ ಬಹುಳ ಚತುರ್ದಶಿಯಂದು ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಫೆಬ್ರುವರಿ ಅಥವಾ ಮಾರ್ಚ್ ತಿಂಗಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಹಬ್ಬ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಡೀ ದಿನ ಉಪವಾಸ, ಜಾಗರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ,೪ ಯಾಮಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಶಿವ ಪೂಜೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುವ ಈ ಹಬ್ಬವೇ ಮಹಾಶಿವರಾತ್ರಿ.
ಮಾಘ ಮಾಸ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಪಕ್ಷದ ಚತುರ್ದಶಿಯಂದು ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುವ ಶಿವರಾತ್ರಿ, ಶಿವ ಭಕ್ತರ ಪಾಲಿಗೆ ಮಂಗಳಕರ ರಾತ್ರಿ. ಹಗಲು ಉಪವಾಸವಿದ್ದು, ರಾತ್ರಿ ವೇಳೆ ಜಾಗರಣೆ ಮಾಡಿ, ಶಿವಧ್ಯಾನ ಮಾಡಿ ಶಿವನ ಕೃಪೆಗೆ ಪಾತ್ರವಾಗುವ ಶುಭ ದಿನ. ಈ ದಿನ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಪೂಜಿಸಿದರೆ, ತಾವು ಮಾಡಿದ ಪಾಪಗಳೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಪರಿಹಾರವಾಗಿ, ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಭಕ್ತರ ಬಲವಾದ ನಂಬಿಕೆ. ಮದುವೆಯಾಗದ ಹೆಣ್ಣುಮಕ್ಕಳು ಶಿವಗುಣರೂಪಿಯಾದ ಅನುರೂಪ ಪತಿಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸಿದರೆ, ಮುತ್ತೈದೆಯರು ಪತಿಯ ಶ್ರೇಯೋಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸುವುದು ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ. ಶಿವರಾತ್ರಿಯಂದು ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿದರೆ, ಸುಖ, ಶಾಂತಿ, ಸಮೃದ್ಧಿ ದೊರೆಯುವುದೆಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆ.
One of the most important festivals of Hindus. This festival is celebrated on Bahula Chaturdashi in the month of Magha. This festival usually falls in the month of February or March. This festival is Mahashivaratri which is celebrated by fasting all day, keeping vigils and worshiping Shiva in all 4 yams.
Shivratri, celebrated on the Chaturdashi of the Magha month of Krishna, is an auspicious night for Shiva devotees. It is an auspicious day to fast during the day, keep vigil at night, do Shiva meditation and get the grace of Shiva. It is a strong belief of the devotees that if they worship Shiva with devotion on this day, all their sins will be resolved and salvation will be attained. While unmarried girls pray for a suitable husband who is Shiva Gunarupi, it is tradition for the maternal grandmothers to pray for the husband's meritorious development. It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva on Shivaratri brings happiness, peace and prosperity.
